Hopefully Maria will get a few wins and get some confidence going.

I believe Sharapova withdrew. So that will bring a change to Maria K's quarter.

Maria will face Dechy in the next round!

This is winnable but I'm just glad she's managed to win a match, If she wins her next match I'll be on such a high!

It's a tough opponent though but I think like you Dechy is beatable in her current form. She needed three sets against a girl who I doesn't know. So maybe this can be Maria's chance. Good luck!

Thats what a like to see really putting her foot down in the final set and winning it well, this should give her some confidence. Good luck against Dechy, that is a winnable match.

Dechy strikes me as being a tougher opponent for Masha than Jelena. But Dechy is only 11-19 in 2006 and is #60 in the tour race. For someone who ended 2005 with a #12 ranking, Dechy has fallen pretty far in 2006. At age 27, maybe her game is starting to drop off. She had a 3 match losing streak herself coming into Montreal and has not been past the second round since before Wimbledon.

To put Masha's first round victory in perspective, Jelena has done pretty well so far in 2006, is #56 in the 2006 tour race (Masha is #30) and had an 18-13 record coming into the match. Jelena has played in two finals this year (lost both) and has run deep in the draw a handlful of times. And at age 25 she has been on the tour a pretty long time and had the experience factor in her favor. She was a pretty tough first round match and one Masha has been struggling with lately. On the other hand, Jelena had been eliminated in the first round of her past three tournaments (now 4) and had a 4 match losing streak herself (now 5).

So maybe these first two matches are just what Masha needed, two opponents struggling just like she is. If Masha continues to serve well, win big off her first serve and keep the unforced errors down against Dechy, she may indeed be "back".

Maria just lost the first set 6-4. :(

Dunno what went wrong out there today. Dechy is a good player but not that good. Masha just could not deal with Dechy serve. Her stats were way way down on her 1st match.

Well she picks up 25 points, but I hoped the win against Jelena K was the turn around. Maybe it was and today was just a bad day at the office.

But she really needs to start putting it together soon. She has a bundle of points too defend in the Asian events, and if she drops them, she will be heading back down the rankings.

For anyone still following Masha in doubles, a great victory today over a very good team of Li/Sun by the score of 6-0 7-6(4). Li/Sun was the #6 seed. Very nice! On to the third round against Black/Groenefeld the #2 seeds.

Thank goodness for doubles. Maybe some doubles success can get Maria some confidence. Can only hope.

As for single, I would pull out of the Pilot Pen next week. I think it would be best to take the week off completely and clear her head. Another early loss at the Pilot Pen would only hurt her mindset. Take the week off and regroup and come back flying for the Open

I agree. Especially seeing as she's not going to get seeded (I think).
