Schiavone’s high variety act: ‘I ask myself too many questions’

By Matthew Cronin,

Schiavone: "I need to free my mind."

FROM THE JP MORGAN CHASE OPEN IN LOS ANGELES – (http://www.********************/us_series_080905.html)How does Italy’s Francesca Schiavone manage to beat Shuai Peng and Kim Clijsters doesn’t? High topspin, low slice, a solid volley and a match on windy backcourt that didn’t contain thousands of fans yelling for an upset. The result was a 4-6, 7-6(1) 6-4 win for the Italian veteran, who never allowed the hard-hitting Peng to find her rhythm.

Unlike Clijsters, who often played deep into Peng’s wheelhouse, Schiavone never gave her the same ball twice. "I used my topspin to keep her behind the baseline," the 13th seed said. "I showed her a lot of different faces. We both played well, but I played a great tiebreaker and had a better plan in the third set."

Schiavone has been nothing but solid during the past three years, ending ’03 and ’04 in the Top 20. She's never won a singles title, but has come darn close. She’s tremendous athlete with a colorful game who fights and yells with the best of them. But she often hits too short (think of her as an A-minus Amelie Mauresmo) and frequently comes up wanting against the Top 10.

"I've improved everything, but I don’t know if I have it inside of me to reach the Top 10," the 25-year-old said. "I've been close but I haven’t been able to find that level. I think I'm going to make a push again, but I need to free my mind."

What she means is that she has to stop being so ambivalent about her on court strategies. Sometimes she’ll be thinking "Charge the net!" and then doubt herself and find herself back on the baseline. Or she won’t decide to go for a topspin or slice quick enough and end up making unforced errors.

"I have so many things in my mind," she said. "I ask myself too many questions and I have to get rid of these questions. I need to free myself as a player and person."

Fourth-seed Nadia Petrova of Russia has never won a title, either, and she’s the highest ranked player without one. Just coming off an elbow injury that’s healed, the usually easy-going all-courter scored an easy straight set win over Jill Craybas (Can tournaments stop giving the American wild cards now?). But, on Tuesday, Petrova was crabby on court and actually shushed a fan who was talking on her cell phone.

"It was quite annoying. I heard her so well that I could tell you what phone number she was giving," Petrova said. "I haven’t been feeling confident because of my elbow and I needed to focus on every point. If I was confident, I might have been more focused and it wouldn’t have bothered me, but today I was only 90 percent confident and it did bother me."

Petrova isn’t thrilled that she title-less, but all the same, she’s happy with her career to date.

"I could be No. 1 with without a Grand Slam title," she said, in obvious reference to former No. 1 players Kim Clijsters and Mauresmo and in possible reference to Maria Sharapova’s becoming No. 1 at week's end without a Slam crown this year.

Petrova is a late bloomer due to the fact that when she was growing up, she never had a real coach and developed numerous technical problems. Her current coach, Glenn Schapp, has refined her game, but for the past few weeks, he’s been at home in Amsterdam nursing a lower back injury. That’s affected Petrova in more ways than she can count.

"You really get used to the person being around," said Petrova, who will play Klara Koukalova in the next round. "The coach does so much for you: arrange practices, hitting partners, massages, stringing rackets, transport, that you can really focus just on tennis. He corrects you when you are doing things wrong. You can’t see yourself play." Schapp will re-join Petrova next week in Toronto.

Francesca,

[1] We love you !!

[2] Do NOT Think too much against Clijsters tonight.

[3] Do NOT "Moon-Ball" from far behind baseline like when you played Conchita.

[4] Kim is going to make you run left and right, use a variety of shots if you can (try coming to net more).

[5] But, remember, whatever the result is tonight, we will always love and cheer for you.

Good Luck,

Francesca,

We look forward to hearing good results of you at the US Open and we will be wishing from our hearts that you win every match.

We thought that you did very well against K. Clijsters last Saturday. You were actually breaking her at the beginning of both sets. Its was aboslutely remarkable as only a handful of players can do that to her which is is also more unlikely in evening matches.

I guess many things must be going through your mind when it was your turn to serve right after you got the breaks. So, you lost serves and you did not win the match.

But, no problem because we know (and you should already known) that you are good enough and up there with the top 10s FOR SURE.

We wish you best of luck in winning your first Single's Title and many others. Please continue to go for it/them.

Try not to think about the breaks you have when you are up. Forget about scores. Forget about mistakes. Forget about unforce errors. Focus only on what works and don't repeat things that do not work against your opponent. We know its easy to say and hard to do. But, please continue trying okay and DO NOT lose belief that you can be up there with the top 10s :)

We love you very much.

Francesca's quarter of the draw at US Open looks tough. She will likely meet Peng Shuai and Serena Williams in early rounds. Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters are also there.

But, she beat Shuai Peng recently and Serena in Rome this year.

(( US Open not on clay ! No problem, Fran has all the strokes and movement. She can and will beat Serena again for sure. "Just don't hesitate, keep pushing, be offensive throughout, and Serena will break down" )).

Our Warmest Wishes to Francesca:

"Please take it one match at a time

We have confidence in you

We wait anxiously to hear/see good results from your matches

Free your mind too. Especially when you are up with Breaks

We love you very much  "

Jelena K may put up some resistance but I'm confident Francesca will pull through. It will be very tough beating Shuai twice in a row but Fran plays well here so hopefully she will play smart and confidently. I'd really like to see a rematch with Serena under the lights. :)

Schiavone To Meet Davenport In Bali Final

It's down to the last two players at the $225,000 Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia, with No.4 seed Francesca Schiavone (http://www.wtatour.com/players/playerprofiles/PlayerBio.asp?ID=&EntityID=1&CustomerID=0&OrderID=0&ReturnURL=&PlayerID=190666) (left) taking on top seed and world No.2 Lindsay Davenport (http://www.wtatour.com/players/playerprofiles/PlayerBio.asp?ID=&EntityID=1&CustomerID=0&OrderID=0&ReturnURL=&PlayerID=40106) in Sunday's championship match. Schiavone advanced when No.2 seed Patty Schnyder retired due to heat illness, while Davenport dropped just four games in beating No.7 seed Li Na.

Francesca,

Good luck on Sunday's Wismilak Final. We think your chances of winning is very good. Regardless of her rank, Lindsay is NOT a great mover. So, please plan your strategy accordingly. Her strike zone is high, so keep the balls low with your slices, vary the paces, drop shots, etc.

Give her no time and/or no comfort to prepare her shots !!

We love you very much.

Francesca caro,

L'amiamo molto

Congratulations in reaching your career high WTA ranking this week.

As we said before, we know you belong inside the TOP 10, so please keep the fire burning.

Good luck in the final Gaz de France. It is very possible for you to beat Kim. Remember the semi-final at JP Morgan Los Angeles, you broke her early in both sets !

Do not be nervous in the final. Just play your game and do your best. We will always be with you any match you play.

In case this is your last tournament of the year. Have a fantastic off-season holiday. We look forward to your return in 2006.

L'amiamo molto.

Oh yes, another Final !

We believe the match between you and Justine will be a match of mental power and confidence, much more so than any of your other matches. And, we got a feeling that this is going to be your year.

Also, please remember that you have many fans everywhere around the world cheering for you. So, all you need to do in the final is focus and do not hesitate with what you want to do. Hit every shot with conviction and do not look back.

We love you very much.

From wtatour.com

Justine Henin-Hardenne fought back from deficits of 4-1 in the second set and 5-3 in the third to beat Italy's Francesca Schiavone 46 75 75 in a gripping, three-hour final of the $600,000 Medibank International.

Schiavone displayed powerful play to take the first set and never let down the remainder of the match. However, No.5 seed Henin-Hardenne was able to step up her play a notch to grab the all-important games that would grant her the second and third sets.

Following the final, Schiavone said, "It was very tough and she played very well in the most important moment(s)...I didn't push maybe sometimes when I had to push....(so) it finished like this."

In the second set, Schiavone led 4-1 with some brave play while Henin-Hardenne began to commit several unforced errors. However, the Italian started to tighten up, and dropped serve at 4-2 to place the set back on serve. At 4-3, Henin-Hardenne led 40-0 on serve but Schiavone fought back to deuce and held a few break points before Henin-Hardenne was able to hold and even the score to 4-4. As Schiavone led 5-4, the Belgian successfully served to stay in the match to tie 5-5. She proceeded to break Schiavone for 6-5 and held her own serve to level the match at one set apiece.

Schiavone led 5-3 in the third set but Henin-Hardenne fought back to lead 6-5, serving for the match. Light rain began to fall at that point, forcing the players off the court for 20 minutes. When play resumed, Henin-Hardenne did not allow the disturbance to falter her concentration as she finished off the match.

"When I was down 64, 4-1, for sure I wasn't in good position at that point," Henin-Hardenne acknowledged. "I couldn't find a solution. I was between the fact that I had to be aggressive but I had to be patient, and I couldn't find the good balance. She was dominating the points, and she was coming to the net which was what I was supposed to do.

So I was a little bit frustrating. But she was playing great. She did put on me a lot of pressure, and it was hard for me to handle this. But after that, I just tried to stay focused on every point. I was hitting the ball harder (and became more aggressive). But even in the third set I was 5-3 down, so I just never thought it was over. That's probably what helped me to win the match."

The win gives Henin-Hardenne her 24th career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title and second in Sydney. She won this title in 2004 and proceeded to win the Australian Open, a feat that has only been accomplished ten other instances since 1969.

The win in Sydney is definitely a boost for Henin-Hardenne, "I think it's great for my comeback. For sure it gives confidence, but a Grand Slam is very different. The next step is...to recover quickly and then get ready for next week. I think the situation is very different from what it was in 2004 when I won here. So I just have to be patient, give the time to my body to recover, and get ready for the whole season."

No.7 seed Schiavone was vying to win her first singles title but drops to 0-6 in singles finals. This was the first time Italy was represented in the Sydney final.

The Italian is projected to rise to a career-high ranking to No.12 when rankings are released and comes into the Autralian Open with a heightened sense of confidence. Schiavone has never passed the third round in Melbourne but the top-ranked Italian senses things may be different this year.

Following her Sydney success, Schiavone stated, "I take the experience. I take that I am doing a good job, in a right way, correct way. (It) ss very good to play against Justine, one of the best players. And I was very near, very close to winning."

Francesca caro,

Come sempre, l'amiamo molto.

We have no question you can beat Kim Clijsters today. We remember you were up with break in both sets at Los Angeles. But, you beat yourself and let the chance slip away. Do Not let the same happen again.

Also, now is 2006, not 2005. Don’t look back. You are definitely better now.

Do NOT do long rallies with Kim, she hits hard and is good with opening up the court. She can still run you East - West even though she is not 100%.

So, don’t play the way she wants you to. You must try running her EAST, WEST, NORTH, SOUTH and see if this works. It will be hard for her to do her usual acrobatics and get to every ball on Rebound Ace even though the surface is slow. Try coming to the net sometimes too and see if it works also.

Stick to what works and do not hesitate out there.

As always, we love you very much.

Evie & Zachary

I like Francesca very much, but i'm quite distrusted. She never won a single title in career, neither WTA nor ITF
If we compare with other best italians, Flavia (1982) won 3 wta and 7 itf, Mara (1981) 1/6 and Roberta (1983) 0/6. If we take the player that follow Fran in the rank, Miskyna (1981) 10/3, Vaidisova (1989) 5/2, Kuznetsova (1985) 5/1, Hantuchova (1983) 1/3, Likhovtseva (1975) 3/2, Ivanovic (1987) 1/5, Dechy (1979) 1/1, Safina (1986) 4/4.

Statistics are cruel: Francesca is a unique case!

I think Francesca should play some minor tournaments and begin to win and gain confidence. But it's a risk: if she loses also whereas she's the number one, her confidence could be definitively lost

We can only continue to support her! Forza Francesca! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Francesca,

What was wrong with you ? How could you let the lead slip away and lose to Svetlana ?

We cannot help thinking one of the French final spots was supposed to be yours. Do you feel the same as we do ?

We were heart-broken once again, but we will always love you.

Its time, you're also 0-7 in finals. Please do something ? We painfully urge you.

Maybe you should relax more on court, so you can see WHERE your opponent is on the other side of the court at all times. You may have been too indulged in yourself (asking too many questions) most of the time when you are up and lose track of whats happening on the other side of the court.
