No worries, I sound a lot more interesting on paper than I actually think I am. :p I feel pretty ridiculous about the video, though, I know it was for a song on the "Rhythm of the Saints" album, but as to which one... :o I think part of the problem is that I never actually saw it-- my parents loved Paul Simon, but we weren't allowed to watch MTV growing up, so I just never had occasion to see the thing.

Also, of course, I was at the rink like 5 hours a day... no time for silly things like television. :p I've spent a lot of the last two years catching up on all the TV time I missed as a child.

I play in Yeovil. But numbers have dwindled there. I played at Bristol a couple of years when I was subcontracting and lived away from home during the week. I play in most Somerset competitions that I can and a few EBU comps like NICKO and Gold Cup - we usually get knocked out 1st or 2nd round though. I also go to some congresses - like Bournmouth. But I'm really hooked on it as a game.

Also when I retire - the thing I'd really love to do is to teach bridge. But of course finding students when I'm in a small neck of the woods would be my problem there.

Thanks Yasmine - if you could. I know there's a lot of sticky threads here - but I do think this one should be sticky for the new posters and ppl who have missed it b4. It's rather like the welcoming thread in CCL was sticky. After this rush - I can see the thread going quiet again before the next influx of posters.

And it's good to be able to look up what the other posters do.

As a compromise/suggestion - is it possible to have a kinda "welcome to JJ's Sub-forum" sticky where we can put links to various threads like the Questionnaire, the main ones, and possibly some of the other main JJ oriented ones?

Also might be handy to have that as a Useful hints and tips thread - for example - I saw somewhere that Sarah included how to embed YouTube clips... etc...

Quite a few other actualy dedicated sites that have forums have that of structure and it's a great one-stop shop for how-to's...

I dunno... is that possible?

It is possible :)

So I supppose... the next question is...how?

Is it a question of writing something and having our friendly neighbourhood mod (Dexter) sticky it (always assuming other people agree)...?

Edit: Danilo (and everyone...)- whaddya reckon to swapping out Schedules to a Welcome one - that's a straight 1-2-1 swap... so we're not stickying anything new...

Should say usual welcome blurb and then have links to:
Questionnaire
Key JJ Sticky ones - N&A, Photos, Vids
JJ Non-stickies like Pick, OT, Schedule
Hints for posting/embedding/megaupload tips, stream capture tips etc
All the others they can discover all by themselves

OK ... so this is what I think - all feel free to chip in with sugggestions (although I feel for all new comers who are going to have to wade through all this too!!!!)

Stickies listed above are absolutely right.
We need an additional sticky for
Welcome & Tips Thread - is there a way of having this always at the top? Something welcoming fans should be the first thing they see...

First post should be a general welcoming message and asking posters to only use this thread only for tips on how to do things in this forum:
eg Posting Images
Embedding Videos
How to convert captured matches and upload them/split them to small files etc
Should also include the links for the other Stickies
This thread shouldn't be used for chat - god knows we have enough of those!

Finally - rather than "advertise" any particular unsticky thread... just encourage new comers to go explore and join in where they like - at the end of the day the more frivolous threads cater to a lot of very diverse interests amongst the regular posters in the forum.
Not everyone likes everything below the sticky line, and it is not our place to decide what people can/can't participate in...

Keen to get people's views?

To have the Welcome and tip ones always at the top, it would mean it always has to have the latest post in, which isn't possible really. Or make it look like *** name of the thread ***. You should create the thread Ros btw. So you'll be able to edit it yourself without asking a mod/admin to do so.

Then I can get an admin onto the stickying/unstickying/editing name thread

I can even read and write Cyrillic now. Sometimes I make grammar mistakes because as you know the grammar is pretty hard but I have no problem understanding anything when others are speaking. My younger brother can't speak Serbian very well. He makes a lot of mistakes and forgets a lot of words. He was born in Canada though. When we were younger and lived in Canada we lived around a lot of Serbian people so I was constantly speaking Serbian with the people around me. When I moved to America it was different because no one around us spoke Serbian and I only spoke it with my parents. Now English is a lot easier for me than Serbian but when I was younger it used to be the opposite I used to think in Serbian and everything.

OK, here's my astonishing and controversial biography:

Hobbies/Interests: theatre, literature, drinking, hypochondria, camping, baking and eating cakes, swimming, watching all kinds of sports and practicing some of them like handball, football and tennis

Secrets: ah, well, I'm an international woman of mystery so there are so many of them, for example: I translate from French and noone knows I don't understand a word of it :tape:

:spit:

You'll fit in here just fine...

Hey, guys and girls, thank you all for your welcome!!
I've realised this is a fruitcake picnic extraordinaire, that's why I liked this place so much. :)
Oh, and I'm so glad there are other ABBA fans here! :bounce: Not to mention JustDoIt on whose shoulder I intend to cry from now on.

Just one question though: Since I'm a bit..shall we say computerly-challenged, please tell me what is this reputation thing? How does it function? What do I do with it (and how)?

G'mornin' Zoja!!!
Basically the reputation thingy is for when you laugh your little socks off or agree wholeheartedly with something someone says, you can click on that Check/Cross mark and "give" reputation points... BUT... it does get a bit picky and you have to spread your approval around before you give it to the same person again, which can be a pain!

You can see what people have said (if anything) if you click on the User CP option (top right of a page... at the bottom of that little panel)... and it will also show you what threads you've been participating, you can send people private messages...

If you ever venture into the land of GM (JustDoIt will hold your hand, I'm sure) be prepared for the extreme views to sometimes dish out bad-reps... where they basically disapprove of what you posted.
Personally I don't bad rep anyone... but some people find it quite funny... I think if you check out JDI's Haters thread there are all kinds of tales of the GM folk who have a real thing against JJ...

Hope that helps... :wavey:

I'm trying it out now (on all of you ), and I think I've figured out how it works.
As for GM, I don't think I won't go there...much. There is a similar situation on the sports news section of a Serbian ''B92'' site, where people leave such moronic comments on any news about JJ. I don't mind anyone dissing the players I like if they do it with some style. But idiots annoy me to no end. (you see, if I went there I'd get so much bad reputation that the server would break down  )

GM can be pretty nasty but it could be (and has been) worse. The Haters thread should tell you all you need to know about who'll be dishing out the nastiness. That's where the handy "Ignore" function can come in ;)

Thanks, it seems to have worked. I've now got a blue rep, which I've never had before . I don't actually know what that is.

Raz once told me you can't give a green good rep while you are a junior member, and she upset someone on GM once by mistake, so be careful who you give them to ;)

I love it when a total board newb grey-reps me in an attempt to red-rep me. I just write back: "Red reps are much worse than grey ones :)"

A blue rep means that a 'Junior Member' or 'Member' gave you a rep, which could be good or bad, depends on what the person writes in also. I actually waited til I was a senior member to give out more reps, in case people took the blue reps in a wrong way, which some did even tho I had added :), :yeah:, etc.

Well, there IS a way to see the details of the reps you get. Just check your personal User CP. It will display green (good rep) and red (bad one) dots together with a comment (if provided by the author), the post you were repped to, and the author of the rep too.

When do you use that thing? Well, never... :o it's just a way to show the community you've been "certified" as a valid poster by others. For instance, just putting the mouse on the green dots line we all have in our posts will show you a comment about our status. To me, the first good rep I got was enough to convert my status from "distinguished road" to "reputation beyond repute".

@ Michael

Further to that, what I was trying to say earlier was that there is nowhere to go to get 'instructions' about how the reps thing works. For example, a lot of people have clearly been confused about the blue reps up to now.

If I go to my User CP, I appear to have an impressive and curiously specific number of rep points (16,616,637), which doesn't appear to bear any realtion to the number of times I've been repped.

I still don't know what these points are for, since everyone seems to have the same reputation anyway (beyond repute) Maybe you use the rep points to give reps to others, I've never checked

If you want to rep someone's post, you click the third icon from the
bottom left on the side panel on the left of every post, and that gives you the choice of good or bad repping, and adding a comment.

I think that covers it :)

Hey, Wayn, to answer your question, I'll quote myself:

A blue rep means that a 'Junior Member' or 'Member' gave you a rep, which could be good or bad, depends on what the person writes in also. I actually waited til I was a senior member to give out more reps, in case people took the blue reps in a wrong way, which some did even tho I had added :), :yeah:, etc.

So, in general, blue (or gray, depends on how you see it) is good :D
