View Full Version : U.S. Magazine Confirms Roddick, Sharapova an Item

Aug 3rd, 2006, 06:10 PM
The latest issue of US Weekly magazine contends that Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova have been dating for over a year, with friends confirming the relationship.

A source for the magazine said the couple recently went public with their relationship at the Zinc Lounge in Manhattan Beach, where they were "beside each other all night."

The magazine also quotes a friend of Roddick's, saying the couple have kept the relationship on the down-low because of Sharapova's age, with the Russian former Wimbledon champ turning 19 this past April. Roddick is 23 years old.

Rumors swirled last month when Roddick was seen having lunch with ex-girlfriend Mandy Moore.

At last year's ESPY awards in July, according to ESPN, "After the party, the two retired to the Tropicana Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and were still lounging together poolside into the wee hours of the morning."

This past January at the Australian Open, Sharapova spent more than one night watching Roddick play poker in a casino.

The Herald-Sun reported back in January from Australian that Sharapova left an IMG player party early to go watch Roddick play poker in a casino's exclusive gambling rooms. Sharapova also saw him play cards on a couple other nights, leading to more speculation that the couple is more than just friends, Fox Sports reported.

I guess I'd make more out of it if they were spending their holidays together and such. I certainly don't think they're spending a lot of time together... Call me a foolish romantic, but I doubt love would follow a tournament calendar. To me, they're still just friends. But I guess until one of them confirms it, anyone of us can make what we want of these rumors, or nothing at all. :p

I have doubts that he was even there. It was the night after he severely injured his back and I doubt he would spend the entire night in a club type atmosphere. I read that they were seen in Vegas when he was in Indianapolis.

true or not, she's already 19. the time has come. and it's time for some of us (me included) to let her go. no offense.

as for whether Roddick would be playing poker after sustaining an injury, well, let's just say you never really know what athletes would do even when they're injured or recovering from it. remember kobe bryant when he 'raped' that woman? If I remember right, he was coming off a very recent surgery. Compared to that, playing poker isn't strenuous.

again, true or not, it's her decision to make.

I know people say that you shouldn't believe everything you read but tabloids do get it right a lot of the time. They knew Jessica and Nick were in trouble despite the fact that the couple denied it, they knew that Brad and Jennifer were in trouble when they denied it and they also knew that Brad and Angelina were an item even when they denied it.

So they are right a lot of the time, when they do get it wrong they get a lawsuit slapped on their desks a la Britney Spears over reports she was getting divorce. So they have to have some solid basis for their stories or they'll get sued!

With tabloids they get the facts a blow them out of proportion, but they usually are right!

It seems Maria likes Andy at least. I don't think she would have shown up at his match if weren't interested in him on some level. She knew it would cause speculation about them. People date around. Maybe thay have had an interest in each other for over a year. That doesn't mean they've been exclusively dating.

But they are both very young and have demanding careers. I don't see this as being permanent, but I think they do make a nice couple. Andy probably makes her laugh and to her, he's kind of an older guy.... girls seem to like guys who are older than they are.

Maria Sharapova is pumped, but rumored mixed doubles pairing with Andy Roddick could use some court sense.
Is there an uglier pair of tennis players than Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick?

This is written with a touch of irony, of course, on a slow, rainy day at Flushing Meadows. Sharapova is model-ish and blond. Roddick is rugged-ish, very American. We all know that. They are wealthy from endorsements. They are treated as marquee draws around here, Photoshopped into all those U.S. Open ad montages.

They are not particularly obnoxious personalities, by the sport's famous bratty standards. Sharapova is a plucky survivor and Roddick is a likable wise guy.

And if in fact they are dating, as is the widely held belief, then they surely make a handsome, hypothetical couple off the court.

But the operating phrase here is "off the court." Because once either of these players sets foot on clay, cement or finely-cut grass, then all those slick commercials mean nothing and he or she becomes suddenly unwatchable. Rodapova, as they are called collectively, is a stomping, thumping Godzilla.

There is no nuance to their games, no point-building, no contribution to the collective knowledge of playing the sport. Roddick hits his 130-mph serve, takes two steps on the court, fires a crosscourt forehand winner off the weak return. Sharapova scrambles side to side chasing balls, hoping to plant her feet just long enough to slug one down the line.

The only debate, really, is which player is tougher to watch. And here, the nod goes to Sharapova, but not by much.

Roddick is a hopeless hybrid, a serve-and-baseline guy whose strokes are way too wrist-y. He doesn't play angles well, doesn't charge the net when he clearly has an opponent at a disadvantage. His volleys are more of a desperate stab than an intuitive touch.

You keep waiting for his right hand to fall off, but somehow it has remained attached to the forearm. Three years ago at Wimbledon, Todd Martin predicted just such a disaster for Roddick.

"If he swings like that the rest of his career and he makes it to 32, I take my hat off to him," Martin said.

Roddick turns 24 today. Happy birthday. Eight years left, on Martin's stopwatch.

Then there are other things about Roddick that are thoroughly disturbing. He stole Alex Rodriguez's nickname. And he helped to bring the baseball cap back into fashion, which is one of the worst public-relations problems faced today by tennis. The cap obscures the faces and personalities of players, makes them all look the same.

So Roddick is guilty as charged, painful to watch. But Sharapova is worse. She uses her racket as a club, hammering groundstrokes until an opponent can no longer withstand the hideous grunting and the low trajectories. Anna Kournikova, the original It Girl, was far more fluid, if only she had a serve.

Sharapova wears a dumb visor. She inspires knockoffs, like Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic, a dead ringer. And with Sharapova, we must put up with her father, Yuri, having a nervous breakdown every time in the players' box. We also must endure those insipid, glamour-girl press conference exchanges, like this one last Saturday:

Q. "You are a professional athlete with movie-star looks, so everybody wants to know, what are you looking for in a boyfriend?"

A. "My case is a little different, because I'm a professional athlete and I travel around the world 10months a year, so probably someone who understands the business that I'm in and, you know, respects it. But also someone that has a good sense of humor and, umm, yeah, I'm not too picky."

Could she have described Roddick any more precisely? Why don't they just get a room already?

Sharapova and Roddick shouldn't be hiding these alleged feelings for each other. They ought to be romancing each other very publicly - kissing, hugging, whatever it takes to make us forget their tennis.

They should be creating a stir in their moribund sport.

As far as couples go, hypothetical or real, Rodapova makes a good deal of sense. It's always a good idea in tennis to date someone around your own ranking. Romances with larger rankings differentials - who can forget the Jennifer Capriati-Xavier Malisse disaster? - have very short shelf lives.

Roddick and Sharapova are meant for each other. They take nice photos. They are a very pretty duo.

But they are also 28 Grand Slam titles behind that other cute couple, Agassi-Graf.

Rotten article.

It shows what sort of drivel the press would pump out if Maria did have an acknowledged boyfriend!

All these "Maria loves Roddick" or "Maria loves Nadal" or "Maria loves JCF" stories are an old gutter journalist trick.

They print an allegation that maria and X are an item in the hope they'll force an official denial. Then they can work the denial into a story and raise the issue again and again at press conferences.

But they are also 28 Grand Slam titles behind that other cute couple, Agassi-Graf.

This comparison is so lame. I'm a great fan of Graf, and I respect this statesmanly, mature, workaholic late-model version of Agassi (he used to be a punk, lest anyone forget), but they got together at the end of Graf's career. No one could rightly say their union led to more Grand Slams, that they spurred each other on. Agassi did win four more Slams after they both won the French Open in 1999, but he would have won those anyway, Graf or no Graf. He was on the rise, he was fit and hungry at the same time.

And as much as I like Graf, she ain't cute. Great player, though.

"It's a little bit of a stretch when we both travel. She's actually busier than I am. That's a little bit of a stretch. But, you know, I think she's great. I can't say enough nice things about her," he said.

no wonder Roddick is in the slump he is now. He has no ambition. Instead of adopting the Star Trek mantra (to go where no man has gone before), he wants Paris Hilton where a lot of men... you know what I mean :o :o .

Paris Hilton is such a dumb slut, she's probably salivating at Andy's family name. "Hey Nicky, I'm going out with a guy named Rod-dick."

How do you explain this? I'm not sure but I'd still bet a million dollars that Maria marries a man (eventually) I mean when the right one comes along..

Masha and Roddick will NEVER happen!

There are lots of things which will never happen. Lets start saving a little space and energy please. For example, Maria will probably never do with her image what Gordon "five stars" Ramsey did with Ashley's image (having it printed on toilet paper). She has a reputation as being a shark, but lots of these Wimbledon winners eat sharks.

I can't even remember the name of the Woman who lost Wimbledon to let Sharapova win, and some say that is the system here, girls letting their favorites win so they can earn favors, same as the men's circuit, but even so that only makes it harder for a player like Sharapova who is an outsider. Sharapova is good enough to win without favors, but only on a good day when everything is working for her.

What in the blue hell are you talking about?!?!

Which word is giving you a problem? Sorry is that too predictable? Does she have a manager anyway? Coach? Then there is no problem I can see.

As for what I said, was it about rankings or tennis, I doesn't mean literally a shark feast, just that the players are rearranging their chairs but the whole game of tennis hasn't improved that much lately. It is still better than men's tennis, at least its organised.

.. then lucky for Gordon that his restaurant chain is improving ;) ... or should i say it his way: "F*ck*n'Great"

.. and about Maria, she can push it back to N°2 in the WTA Ranking, but i don't think things are going fluently with that shoulder injury etc.
getting to place 1 will be virtually impossible as long as Henin protects that "zone". (& getting in her good grace wont make any diff. for Shara.)

true or not, she's already 19. the time has come. and it's time for some of us (me included) to let her go. no offense.

as for whether Roddick would be playing poker after sustaining an injury, well, let's just say you never really know what athletes would do even when they're injured or recovering from it. remember kobe bryant when he 'raped' that woman? If I remember right, he was coming off a very recent surgery. Compared to that, playing poker isn't strenuous.

again, true or not, it's her decision to make.

Gee I hope this has all blown over now. One question, who says Maria isn't the Queen of Diamonds? Back to the drawing board maybe?

I would say yes to that, Papa. Back to the drawing board. We can do anything. You're the King of Diamonds, Papa. It will happen soon. Maria should return the gnome she stole from our front lawn. If she did, Mama might stop sleeping with Uncle Paul and come back home to us. Her serve is the key.
