SAN DIEGO, August 1 (Reuters) - Martina Hingis, who retired in 2002 before making a successful full-time return to the WTA Tour at the start of this year, warned Russia's Anna Kournikova to be fully prepared before pondering a comeback of her own.

"She'd really have to commit herself and grind it out," Hingis told reporters after revealing Kournikova offered to reprise their doubles partnership that won the 2002 Australian Open title.

"She used to have her mother and a great support team to help her and she doesn't have that now. You can't just play one week and come back. You have to be more professional about it," Hingis said at the Acura Classic, where she is seeded eighth.

The 25-year-old Kournikova, a former world number one doubles player who was ranked in the top 20 in singles from 1998 to 2000, has not played on the tour since cutting her 2003 season short due to a back injury.

She competed this year in the World TeamTennis event and has never officially declared she will not play competitively again.

Hingis played an exhibition with Kournikova last December and says the pin-up Russian must improve before returning.

"She was okay," said the Swiss. "But she would have to train. I don't want to go out there and lose first round."

"It would be great to see her out there.

If Kournikova still has her sex appeal, a comeback would help the tournaments sell tickets, at least to opening round matches. I don't know if Hingis-Kournikova is a pairing that would intimidate anymore.

Martina!! :hearts: I was hoping you would persuade Anna to come back... Melanie should coach her along with Martina! It'd be so amazing to have Anna back, wow...

That's exactly the thing though. Anna can still play the game, she'd just need to do soooooo much physical training to get into decent playing shape, and also deal with her oncourt issues as well (serve, etc.)

Martina told it like it is, once again. Boy would I LOVE to see Kournikova really commit herself to a comeback, that would be so amazing. But I still don't honestly believe Anna even wants to have to deal with life on the WTA Tour anymore, and she doesnt have to. It saddens me, but it's the reality I'm having to come to terms with. I wish Anna would prove me wrong though.

Can anyone tell me why Anna doesn't have her mum and support team anymore, are they fighting over property or something?

Kournikova and ANYONE would draw in the boys. Sharapova just seems to draw in the media.

I saw a little of Anna playing WTT doubles a few days ago. Her serve is very weak, but the rest of her skills are still there, a little rusty, but still there. She has the potential to be a strong doubles player again, but one thing, she is like a stick figure now. She would really need to build herself up and put on some pounds or she will get blasted off the court. And obviously, friends or not, Hingis won't partner with her to lose, so Anna will really have to shape up.

Lol, I love Martina so much. Even though Martina has said that she does not want to play doubles anymore, I know that she'd play if her good friend Anna wanted to reprive their team. It'd be great to see them playing together again and having fun.

But its impossible for Martina to get the best out of herself in Singles if she plays doubles too. Its draining.

its only so draining because she plays so many tournaments. if she cut her schedule, she'd be fine to play doubles.

and in the context that this probably won't happen till next year, i'm sure by then Hingis will feel that she has enough match play to only play 16-18 tournaments a year

 Spot on!

Finally, Martina talks about Anna's possible return. Hope Anna will just go out there and do it.

OMG, it seems, Anna really wants to come back and it is not just a rumour!! Even Martina is talking about it!

OMG, if she would be back, we would only need Monica and Jen back and all characters of the early 2000´s - tour soap opera would be in competition again!!!

Please Anna, comeback and show who is the true darling of russian tennis!!!!

Well, what I get fromt he article is that Anna wants to comeback herself... but it also seems like she isn't willing to put the training effort in it to get in shape.

She would't have to play a full schedule if she only plays doubles. She could play all the Slams, the Tier 1's and maybe a Tier 2 every now and then.

It would be great.

Personally I don't want to see her come back - because (1) she is made of plastic, and (2) she would draw a lot of attention away from the players who deserve it more.

It doesn't matter how many tournaments Martina plays, if she is playing doubles in the grand slams she will be drained by the time she reaches the quarterfinals of singles. She can't play doubles in grand slams anymore (unlike when she was a spring chick).

We don't know what Anna said, so all we have is what Hingis said to go by. Anna might really want to train and rededicate herself. I would love to see her hire Brad Gilbert as her coach. I think he could do wonders for her self-confidence (tennis wise) and work on minimizing the effort on her serve.

Volcana - Hingis/Kournikova doesn't intimidate anyone? Are you on crack? Maybe not right now, but if they were to play at Oz next year, all bets are off on who would beat them. A fit, strong AK and MH would destroy almost every doubles team playing now.

Marti, she doesn't have the will to do it for real, like you did. She'd just be a sideshow.

I am already on cloud nine, just the tought of both Kournikova and Hingis back on the tour excites me, and playing doubles :worship: It would help the wta tour a lot ;)
But Hingis is right she needs to prepare well ;) , talent wise in my opinion she has always had it, she just needs to improve the work ethic :bounce:

Anna K could come back and attempt to be the Queen of the Tier III, Tier IV tourneys, because quite honestly that's her only chance. But even then, she'd have to compete with the other Anna -- Smashnova...

In '02, FFBF (famous for being famous) had a 2-0 h2h against Smash going into (Tier V) Shanghai, where they met in the final. Guess who won. :tape:
