View Full Version : Venus & Serena playing eachother = COLLUSION?

Does anyone else think that when Venus & Serena play eachother that they decide the winner and number of sets won prior to playing?

Maybe it's the skeptic in me, but it just seems sometimes that they are playing badly on purpose.

Serena starts throwing in creampuff second serves, Venus goes for outright winners when they are simply not there. Also their screams are rediculous. It all seems contrived to me. I am a huge Williams fan but I just don't buy it.

Right now I am watching their R16 match from the US open last year and it's just BAD. It just looks like they are putting on a show.

What would they gain from playing badly on purpose? If the matches were fixed, don't you think they would always be atleast three sets, not to mention better quality since they would have decided where the other was going to hit and who was going to win the point. I think if anything, some people are mad they don't fake their matches and make them all three setters full of great points the whole way through.

no i dont think that at all

i think that its just a different kind of pressure when you're playing someone so close to you. it becomes a whole different ball game (literally)

it must just be weird and bring out the worst in them

what are you trying to start here??? That's so stupid. Their both fighters and want to win. Have you ever watched most of their matches vs. eachother? They both want to win so bad, and are upset when the lose.

real Willy fan? I think not :o

if you really watched you would see how emotional they get. I remember seeing the AO 03 final and Venus giving a way a set point and she chunked her racket. She was pissed! and Serena got mad all the time when she lost to Venus. So the answer is No

WELL - I didn't mean to start anything here.

The last couple of matches I saw, Serena played so badly that I couldn't help but think it.

I have refrained from starting a thread for a long time because I knew that this would be the response I would get but I genuinely wanted to know if anyone else ever thought this.

Guess Not!

One of the most entertaining matches I've ever seen was Venus vs. Serena in Maimi in '05 (if memory serves me). It was great tennis, highly competitive and an emotional rollercoaster.
I think the suggestion that either one of them would tank it in a match is ridiculous. They're both way to competitive. Once either one is on-court, it's go time.
Maybe it's just the skeptic in me, but I highly doubt that "a huge Williams fan" would suggest such a thing.

Well - just because I am a huge Williams fan doesn't mean I think they could DO NO WRONG. They are human after all, and they are in a very unique family situation. Maybe they thought their H2H was making Venus look bad.

I am sure this thread is going to earn me some badrep. But this IS A TENNIS FORUM and it crossed my mind and wanted to know if anyone else thought it too. That's all. After all, I think famliy reputation is important to both sisters and I think a reputation of both players being equal would be better for the family.

Also, I started watching tennis in '03. I think long after the original accusations of collusion. I didn't realize the wounds were so fresh. People are very angry about this topic. I was honestly only asking if anyone else thought it too.

This is why you're wrong (no other way to put it )

You'll notice that when they started out, Venus dominated their rivalry. Serena looked like the inferior sister. When Serena began to beat Venus, she not only began to beat Venus, but she was beating everybody. So its quite plausible that Serena would beat Venus when she was the top player in the world.

Last year Venus was clearly the more in-shape and in form of the two. She not only beat Serena, but racked up some very solid wins at Wimbledon and the Bank of the West.

It's easy to look at one match and jump to a conclusion. But when you look at their overall results and who they have been beating that year, it's quite clear that the better player won.

Well yall know I love Venus and Serena more 100 times more than any WTA player. I actually thought that sometimes they did discuss who would win...because to me Venus did not play as hard as she normally does when she faced Serena in some slams. (for instance All of 02, and the Aus 03) I thought thats Venus wanted Serena to have her time in the spotlight because she was already Olympic Champ, Wimbledon and U.S. Open champ twice. Not to mention she were in commercials, and got that big endorsement from Rebok as well. Just my thought...I didnt care who won, long as WILLIAMS was the winner ;)

IMO being a fan means enjoying the good and bad from your favorite players, not being blind about their personality characteristics and/or results or having unrealistic expecations of them. It must be very difficult being one of the best players of all time and playing your sister who is one of the best players of all time.

I don't think so - if there was collusion, I don't think Serena would be "given" all those slams and keep beating Venus in those slam finals. Seems to me it would be 50/50. I just think it's emotionally draining to play your sister, particularly at the biggest stages of tennis (hence the poor play, one sister handling the situation better than the other, etc etc.)

If it is a collusion...SO WHAT...its their business...the title is goign to have Williams on it anyway...;) thats all I cared about when they played each other anyway.

If tennis players are fixing matches.....so what? I'll tell you what, a lifetime ban from the sport is what.
I would never suggest or believe that either of them would fix matches, but if it were proven to be true.....bye bye!

That's actually very true. It's rarely good tennis, but my goodness they are sisters and they know each other's games like the back of their hands!

 I am extremely realistic about the state of Serena and Venus' tennis.

HELL YEA its hard playing ur sister, but that doesn't mean you FIX a match. That's so absurd. Like i laugh when I read that because it's like, are you new to tennis or something? It just doesnt happen....

And the fact that you call them one of the best players of all time makes it EVEN MORE absurd that they'd suddenly stoop to the level of fixing matches. Come on now...

and the H2H makes absolutely no sense if it's staged

why would they stage it so Serena wins 6 in a row ...and wouldn't she have just given Venus Wimbledon 03'

Serena is not the type of player that could ever lose a match on purpose even if she felt pity for her sister

I don't think they fixed the match. I agree with King that nervous, unconvincing tennis could only be the product of some wierd sibling stuff. If it was fixed, they would just relax and let it rip.

In the beginning Venus handled it better and won, then Serena "got tired of losing" and started to win. Venus logically beat an out-of-form Serena the last two times they've played to even the h2h. Really the only matches I actually saw them play that were of relative high quality and where both of them seemed to be really competitive: Aus Open 2003, Wimbledon 2003, and Miami 2005. Aus Open, Serena wanted it more and Venus blinked; Wimbledon, Venus wanted it more, but was injured; Miami, Venus wanted it more and wasn't injured and finally got it done!

I can't imagine playing any of my sisters, who I love to death and like Venus always says only wants to see them have the best. At the end of the day, they are both competitors and both want to win.
