View Full Version : My Day at the Acura Classic (Match and Practice Session Reports)

I spent the day watching a few matches (yeah, this draw was not so much), but mostly I was peeking in on practice sessions.

First of all, we got started almost an hour and a half late because there was so much mist in the air. It was making the courts too wet, and even when it stopped, they had no system in place to dry the court. they had like 1 delapidated sponge. They had to bring the gardening crew out onto the courts with their leaf blowers to try to dry them :tape: :tape: :tape:

MATCHES:
Lisjak vs. King - This match was very much in Lisjak's hands. From time to time she was able to get her first serve in consistently, and at those times she was holding easily. But too often she had to resort to her powderpuff of a second serve (it settled around 67-73 mph), and King would control the pionts from there. They alternated games of great rallies, with hard flat shots, and horrible games of 4 foot wide double faults and error after error after error. While it wasn't the best tennis I have ever seen, it certianly was exciting at the end, and the crowd was way behind king.

Ruano Pascual vs. Kudryavtseva - Only saw a bit of this from where I was sitting at the stadium. Virginia did her best to lose this match (I have seen her play a million times better than she did today), but Alla has approxminately nothing to damage anyone. So it wasn;t too hard for her.

Tu vs. Vanc - Only saw the first set of this. Vanc   is all I need to say. Tu didn't even play very well at bageled her in the first.

Yuan vs. Kateryna Bondarenko - SUCH a fun match. I am a huge Bondarenko fan now. There were some really beautiful shots in this match, but Bondarenko probably should have won it much easier. It's all in her head. She has the game to go so far, but she erupts every two seconds with long tirades of exclamations, it was great. She was so expressive she had the whole crowd (pretty much filled the grandstand) behind her at the end. Unfortunately for Yuan she had to call the trainer in the third and get her left leg (lower thigh) wrapped. She was not really the same from that moment on, but Kateryna certianly still did her best to give the match a way. Truly a treat, a painful treat, to watch.

I tried to was a little of Savchuk and Kirkland, but that was the dullest match I have ever had the displeasure to see part of. Neither player had any energy, and unfortunately for them, Yuan and Bondarenko had stolen most of the crowd. But it was like watching two slugs play. Blah. And I like Jessica. Really disappointing.

Practice Sessions
This was the most fun part of the day. Early on Martina and Petrova came out to practice together (so of course I followed them. I saw Melanie's hat bouncing by and I was like "I'm on the scent!"), but they couldn't find a dry court, and then the ended up walking into a dead end looking for one. It was pretty funny. But they got on to practice on court 2 and both looked very solid. Martina was working on her movement/agility a lot. Nothing out of the ordinary for them. I also saw Hantuchova warming up a little. When Ruano Pascual was playing, Suarez was at an adjacent practice court with another player (looked like Pennetta, but she had her back to me), and a coach, and they were laughing up a storm. It was fun to see them all doubled over laughing before going for a hit. I saw Safina practicing about 1 billion backhands in a row and they looked awesome. Martina came out to a practice court again later on with a hitting partner to work on some things. She was coming to net a lot and looked solid there, but when practicing her serve it looked particularly suspect, which was a little unnerving. I also saw Sharapova briefly at the end of the day (which a huge crowd around her of course) and she was also hitting the life out of the ball. Is she skinnier than she used to be? She was a STICK! The only problematic practice session I saw was between Peng and Likhovtseva. Maybe it was just what I saw, but they looked like they were having trouble keeping the ball in the court on the rallies. Peng's movement seemed to leave a little to be desired.

Well, that's my report. Feel free to ask any questions.

She looked tons better, and her movement seemed fine. I don't even remember her thigh being wrapped, but it may have been and I am just so desensitized to thigh wraps that I didn't notice. I was more focused on Martina :o

Thanks, your post was very insightful. I'm so glad to hear that Petrova is back on!

 I hope Petrova and Hingis meet in the semis!

Thank you! Please watch Peng-Santangelo, at least a bit if you can! It's on Grandstand, later in the day. I want to know if Shuai seems recovered from her injury sustained at wimbeldon... have had NO INFO other than that she had to withdraw from Fed Cup over it.

And she had just started to play well, after a rocky start of the year.

Shuai has lot of points to defend here, having made it to SF last year! So hope to hear some good news from you.

Thanks a lot :wavey:
