Hey everyone, I'm new here!

I was looking at the possibility of Nicole Vaidisova finally reaching the top 10 before Montreal (where she has pts to defend). Can someone tell me if it is correct? Thanks!

Rankings right now:

9 Mary Pierce 1636
10 Lindsay Davenport 1587
11 Anastasia Myskina 1575
12 Nicole Vaidisova 1522
13 Martina Hingis 1396
14 Francesca Schiavone 1336

San Diego points off:

Lindsay Davenport 1587
Anastasia Myskina 1575
Nicole Vaidisova 1522
Martina Hingis 1396
Mary Pierce 1336
Francesca Schiavone 1294

Lindsay, Anastasia, Francesca not playing San Diego.

Nicole can reach top 10 for first time if she makes QF (winning just 2 matches). 1522+75=1597, so that would put her #9. If she were to make the semis: 1522+135=1657.

Martina has Kim in her QF, so if Martina were to lose she would be at 1396+75=1471. Wouldn't pass Nicole (if she makes QF) Semis: 1396+135=1531. Wouldn't pass Nicole either (if makes QF). Finals: 1396+210=1606 (would pass if Nicole lost in QF).

Mary has a tough draw. I don't see her defending all her points.

So it looks like Vaidisova has a real shot at finally cracking the top 10 if she can just win two matches. She could be contending for a higher ranking had she not missed Pacific Life & Miami!

First, a very minor correction. Because of the best 17 rule, Nicole will have 1596 points after reaching QF, not 1597 with one of her 1 point results dropping out of the picture.

Second, after she reaches QF, she will temporarily find herself at #9. Three things MUST happen for her to miss on top 10.
1. She loses to Petrova/Ivanovic/Chakvetadze/Golovin in QF (possible).
2. Hingis reaches F by beating Clijsters in QF (possible).
3. Pierce wins her first tournament after a long break, beating Groenefeld, Sharapova, Dementieva/Schnyder and Hingis (highly unlikely).

The probability of all these three things happening is so unlikely that I would say that two wins by Nicole (i.e. QF) virtually guarantee her a spot in top 10. She will just have to beat Likhovtseva and Hantuchova.
