I'm thinking of travelling to Australia. I wouldn't be looking to go until January but I could do with some advice now. Six months would be long enough-is it possible to get a six month working visa? all I can find on the websites are twelve month working visas. Who are the best crowd to go to when looking for a visa? I will either be leaving from Ireland or England. Any advice from Aussies or someone who has gone before would be great :)

i'm australian but i don't really know much about working visa here. I'm pretty sure you can't just get a six month one though. i think we have a relationship with the UK that both sides can get 2 year visas which allow you to work for a year in that time.

i'm leaving for the UK/Euopre in September.

Stay in Sydney. It is much better than Melbourne (it's very nice but if your coming in summer you want the beaches ;)

Pretty sure you can't get only a 6 month visa. You can of course get a longer one, and not use all of it though. ;)

Melbourne is way nice
Sydneys's cool too
they're different, but both just as nice
Brisbane and Perth are nicer
Not as big, no stress, just very cool

anyways, you can only get a year long working visa
and you'll wanna stay after 6 months, trust me
so just get your year long visa
work on a farm for 3 months, and you can even get an extra year on it :p

i've been there from august 05-februari 06
it was AWESOME

Switz is spot on.. Sydney is the best place to go. Way better than Melbourne (let the fighting begin mwhahahahaha)

You can only get the 2 year visa which allows you to work for 12 months. I believe there used to a rule that u couldnt work in the same job for longer than 3 months but not sure if that rule still exists.

Czechfan's right you are only allowed to stay in one job for 3 months. If you only want to stay for 6 months you should just get the 12 months and leave when you want to leave - you don't have to work for 12 months.

It's easier going through the Irish visa system than the UK one. You need to show evidence that you have 2000 in your bank account as well:)

Sydney is miles better - better clubs, more jobs, mor people

I am a Sydneysider, I love Sydney compare to any other Australian states

go to www.dimia.gov.au (http://www.dimia.gov.au)

just browse the link above!

Melbourne is the 2nd best city in Australia I reckon ( bloody freezing down there now compare to Sydney winter!)

Thanks for the advice people :) though now I'm very torn between Sydney and Melbourne! Don't know what I'll do now because I really don't think I can spend a year away. I've been talking to a few people who have chanced over illegally i.e got a 3 month or 6 month holiday visa and just got paid into the hand. They reckon loads of people do it no bother but it would be an almighty risk to take!

Yeah be very careful with going illegal. Australia is much better at enforcing visa's than the UK I think.

I had an irish flatmate who overstayed.. He was such a lovely guy and when they caught him, they threw him in a Detention Centre prior to deporting him and the detention centre is exactly like a prison. Very bleak. We both cried when I went to visit him as it was really full on.

If you want to do jobs like fruit picking then getting paid cash in hand is fine.. But even doing bar work is harder to get cash in hand work as licensing laws make sure everyone has a RSA (responsible service of alcohol) certificate - so when bars and pubs hire people these days they usually put them on the books and make it all above board kinda thing..

hmm getting thrown into a deportation centre doesn't sound too great! Thats an awful story about that poor Irish chap! I know what you mean about things being above board - working in London at the moment in a bar and I have to ring to get an insurance number. Nomatter where you travel now its very difficult to get paid into the hand. Some people have said to me just try to get the 12 month visa and I can come back after 6 months if I want.

Australia is very strict with the Immigration Law, so please no matter what are you going to do, LEGAL Visa is better and safe way! ;)

got talking to some Aussies outside of a club early this morning and it ended up in a bit of a debate over whether Sydney or Melbourne was better :D They assured me that it is just a friendly rivalry though! One of them was adament that I should go to Queensland! I asked them about heading over there and they said not to chance it illegally because even Aussies find it difficult to get jobs and if I'm caught.............! They thought my best option was to try to get the 12 month Visa and come back when I need to.

:wavey: Anyone who watched Sunday Sunrise this morning would see the result. "Australians vote Melbourne Australias best city";) :p Thought I should come in and give the good news. ;) :p

Queensland? If you stay away from the commercialism that keeps places like Surfers Paradise etc operating, then you will have a great time. Japaneese tourists have begun to snub the Gold Coast because it is like a mini Japan these days. My advice if you want a great Aussie Holiday. Jump on a plane and wing it from when you get here. Try also to get out of the capital cities, for then and only then will you get a "true" Aussie experience.

Last thing before you travel, we don't all have Kangaroos as pets. Also, running from a croc diagonally will not confuse it. If you get caught by a croc or white pointer, don't fight and save your'e energy. ;) You will have a blast. (p.s have never seen a live croc, only north end of the country). :wavey:

I had fun in Surfers, but i only stayed there for 3 days
Laughed my ass off though.
Party place :rocker2:, lots of asians in the streets during the day
but not on the beach and not in the clubs at night, so didn't bug me

If ya land in Sydney, just travel up the coast, there's loads of fun and some cool things to see
I think i went from sydney to
Katoomba (Blue Mountains), Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Surfers Paradise, Brisbane (worked there, for Peter Pan), Noosa, Rainbow Beach, Fraser Island, Whitsunday Islands, Bowen (worked there, eggplant farm), Townsville, Magnetic Island, Tully (worked there, banana farm), Cairns, Port Douglas

from there i went to mt isa (QLD), katherine, kakadu park, darwin, alice springs, ayers rock (all Northern T.), some shitholes in W.A. Broome, canarvon, geraldton, perth (all Western Aus.), from there i took the train to adelaide, the plane to melbourne and that was is

did it all in 6 months
but to see and do all, you'll need a year

crocs are friendly, lol, when you're on a boat-tour and they're jumping for meat on a stick that is :p

One thing Melbourne doesnt have and will always make it inferior to Sydney, is THE HARBOUR.

It makes the city beautiful. The beaches. Melbourne just cannot compete.

Melbourne has a poo brown river, kinda like the Thames running through it as its 'water feature' lol.

Melbourne does have better sporting events I agree. But the Aus Open is 2 weeks of the year and we are discussing where to live.

If sun, surf and sand is your style - sydney is the only choice.

If cafe culture and sipping latte's is more your thing, go to melbourne lol

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was in Oz in January in 2003, and got lucky because a friend of mine is a native of Canberra (skip it unless you're into war museums), and acted as my tour guide for both Syd and Melbourne. Sydney is just about the prettiest city outside of San Francisco, and the museums ain't too bad there either.

Far out Alfa, Im finding myself in agreement with you more and more these days!! As long as I stay out of those Steffi threads :)

Sydney has museums? I never knew!! LOL just kidding..

I like the Powerhouse Museum the best..the most interactive of them all.

Did u go to Questacon in canberra? I went there when I was 12 and loved it..

Did u drive from Canberra to sydney Alfa? if so you would have driven past the turnoff to my home town!!

I didn't do the Questacon, but did do the war museum, and the telstra tower. I don't much care for Canberra, to be frank. I prefer cities where there is an actual downtown. In Syd, I did the Sydney Art Museum, and loved it. The Aboriginal Art Museum in Melbourne was great too. My friend Garry and I drove (he drove) from Canberra to Sydney, but flew down to Melbourne for the Oz Open 2003 (saw the Williams final under roof), as the drive would've taken too long.

I'd go back, but think I want to explore New Zealand first.

Sounds cool! I dont suppose you remember a big assed Mcdonalds in the middle of nowhere in the highway with petrol stations on either side of the highway?

Anyway thats where I grew up and that Maccas was my first ever job!

Canberra is a hole. Totally agree with you. No character. Just a manufactured city. But I love the Canberra Raiders...

Can't say I remember the McDonalds, but I do remember being really happy that the baggy look in men's shorts never seemed to take hold down under. All those road construction crews, whew!

Boy, you did grow up in the sticks. I remember Garry saying there was a big lake on the right hand side coming out of Canberra, and I never did see the lake- nothing but dry red baked earth.

But Melbourne has the almost European atmosphere
The nice cafe's, all big sports events

It's tough to pick
