George Bush's massage diplomacy

http://blogs.smh.com.au/newsblog/archives/bush.jpg
George W Bush has been dubbed the 'Groper-in-Chief' after being caught on video trying to give his German counterpart a shoulder rub at the G8 Summit.

Days after a well-publicised open microphone gaffe, in which the US President used a four-letter word (http://media.smh.com.au/?source=int20533r&ie=1&name=&rid=20460&player=wm7&rate=4542&sy=smh&category=&t=59AD40&flash=1)while having what he thought was a private conversation with the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, a video of Bush using massage diplomacy on the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, is doing the rounds on the internet.

The footage shows Bush waltzing into a G8 conference room and pausing to place his hands on Merkel's shoulders, which he squeezes several times.

After appearing momentarily stunned, Merkel, the only female head of state at the G8, throws her arms up and shrugs her shoulders in protest.

One German tabloid described the candid moment as Bush's "Love Attack on Merkel!" after giving her a "Texas One-Second Massage". (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/18/AR2006071801550.html)

Another website labelled Bush 'Groper-in-Chief' (http://www.truthdig.com/eartotheground/item/20060718_groper_in_chief/)while a posting on AlterNet (http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/39135/) described Bush's international trip as "the most embarrassing official trip abroad for any American president."

"Eclipsing even his father's unfortunate chunk-hurling on the Emperor of Japan, Bush has made yet another shameful blunder on what is now undoubtedly the most embarrassing official trip abroad for any American president," the posting said.

"After stumbling from Putin's smackdown at his suggestion that Russia ought to emulate the democracy in Iraq to babbling about wanting to eat a pig to getting caught on tape cursing while chomping on a roll, Bush channeled the Creepy Guy at Work who gives a female coworker an unwanted massage, much to his repulsed target's chagrin."

Sex appeal is one of the big things going for him, so you have to use what you have. The old broad was into it, if it helps relations with Germany, who am I to criticize?

 did you see the look on her face? "Into it"?

Actually, I almost felt bad for him. I'm sure that, like the stupid nicknames he gives out, the shoulder-squeeze is something he does with the "good ol'boys" or people he wants to think he's chummy with, and that it was a ham-fisted way to try to create some warm-fuzzies. He came off like the little boy who has a crush and tries to get the girl's attention by shoving a frog down her dress.

Except, he's not a little boy.

(i loved Jon Stewart's comment, though "You know if it had been Clinton, he'd have somehow gotten her bra off wthout complaint" :haha: )

If I hear him refer to people in the Middle East as "folks" again, I'm going to scream.

I didn't see the video, maybe she was grossed out, but who wouldn't want a little bit of lovin' from our president. ;)

I assume he is trying to be playful but it comes off condescending and disrespectful, especially since she's a woman. Really silly because I doubt they are buddy buddy chummy in private much less in public.

As meyerpl said, maybe he's gone back to the drink.

He could put on the Palestinian scarf and do a high five
gesture.

Oh wait, that was the Spanish PM today or yesterday.

I'm sure the people who lost loved ones in the
train explosions are real happy with that move,
solidarity.

He could make leaders wait in the other room while
he played with his intern, instead of going over Middle
Eastern policy.

He could beat up a wild rabbit with an oar like Carter.
Now, that's a funny picture.

But, he can't top dear old dad...he didn't throw up
on anyone.

I don't think anyone is going to top that for a long
time. Barfing in Japan.

Merkel and he goof around, that's pretty clear. The
woman served him wild boar. What's that all about.
He's a goofball, I agree. He makes faces.

So what?

He got the G-8 to agree w/his policy ideas quite a lot,
more than usual. Fact is the G-8 generally agreed
w/his policy stances. He took a pro-Israel stance, and
he's sticking with it to allow Israel to respond to the
months of attacks from South Lebanon terrorist
camps.

Good.

He can be a goofball all he wants.

The Rolling Stones

Angie, Angie
When will those clouds all disappear
Angie, Angie
Where will it lead us from here

With no lovin' in our souls
And no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
Angie, Angie
You can't say we never tried

Angie, you're beautiful, yeah
But ain't it time we said goodbye
Angie, I still love you
Remember all those nights we cried

All the dreams we held so close
Seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear
(whispered): Angie, Angie
Where will it lead us from here

Oh Angie don't you weep
Or your kisses, they'll taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But Angie, Angie
Ain't it time we said goodbye

With no lovin' in our souls
And no money in our coats
You can't say we're satisfied
But Angie, I still love you baby
Everywhere I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you
Come on baby dry your eyes

Angie, Angie
Ain't it good to be alive
Angie, Angie
They can't say we never tried

No, this doesnt even register on the list of reasons why Bush is the worst president ever. This is just something to have a laugh at.

Shunning the scientific community in place of his 'gut feeling', invading soverign nations for their oil and lying to the world about the reasons why, blurring the lines more than ever between church and state, ignoring the biggest problem facing the planet (global warming) to pander to his oil company CEO mates - these reasons are why he is the worst president ever and thats just the tip of the iceberg

samsung101
Jul 21st, 2006, 05:52 PM
Global warming? That's our biggest problem. Didn't we have
heat waves before? Hurricanes in the 1700 or 1800's? How
did the Grand Canyon get like that? Must have been global
warming, all those camel and wagon trains and horses, too
much gas and fertilizer I guess.

If China and India are exempted from the Kyoto Treaty, what
good is it? If China is the fastest growing economy, biggest
manufacturing nation, and becoming an auto nation in droves,
why is it exempt from the same restrictions you would have
placed on the USA? Ditto for India. Ditto for 3rd world nations
exempted, but, producing massive amounts of pollution.

What exactly did Al Gore do for 8 years to fix global
warming? Not much. He was busy putting cash in bags
at temples for campaigns. He's a nice guy. Nice flick.
But, as a Senator, he did little, as VP he did even less.

Worst President ever? Sorry, little Jimmy Carter has that
one. Look up his 1970's record on unemployment, job growth,
inflation, interest rates (double digits), gas prices (with
inflation our prices are still lower than his were), and his
horrible, awful, wretched foreign policy: Afghanistan, Iran,
Israel, Arafat. He was hideous. Well intentioned, nice smile,
lousy president. An extremely hideous ex-President.

Unemployment has been at record rates.
For years, not a few months.
Record economic growth for years.
Low inflation.
Low interest rates.
Home ownership rates up for all groups - black, brown,
women, etc.
Lowered tax rates for all.
Govt. income up, how did that happen?
Bush policy.

I hate his immigration policy.
I hate his education dept. expansion.
I don't like his presc. drug policy.
I don't like that he hasn't pushed harder
to get his judges confirmed.
Harriet Miers, I almost lost it w/that choice.
Mineta, that guy should have been axed long ago.

The guy irritates me a lot, but, overall, he's done
what I voted for him to do more than not.

John Bolton.
John Roberts.
Alito.
Those three alone were reason to vote for him.

As for Iraq, geez, same old BushLied mantra.

Read a few of the speeches and reports of Albright, Gore,
Clinton, Cohen, Richardson, Feinstein, Hillary, etc. prior
to the 2nd week of the war - go back to 1992 to 2000, and
you'll find what? Words that match what Bush said,
what Bush believed, and what he intended to do. They
all agreed Iraq w/Saddam was a threat to the USA international
security, period. No questions about it. Use some hindsight, and
read what the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act was about, and what
was said to push it through.

Those Democrats sound a lot like Cheney and Bush.

Anyway, if we wanted to go to war for oil, we'd just invade
Mexico. We get more of our oil from Canada and Mexico, not
the Middle East. How hard would it be anyway?

Blurring the lines between church and state? With what?
The marriage protection act, wait that was signed by Clinton.
Funding community groups aligned with churches for civic
activities, that too was funded by Clinton in similar programs.
Bush just expanded it. Being against abortion, like 50% of
America. No, it's really, federal funding of abortion that is
at issue, each state can always decide it directly.

Trying to massage Merkel was lame.
But, hey, maybe she liked it the time he did it before.

As I said, she's obviously a big tease.

What an idiot Bush is, surely all Americans must be ashamed of him?!

I am. Although as Czechfan pointed out, this bit of foolishment is the least among the reasons why.

That will happen when what you have to work with is heavily edited and manipulated intelligence data provided by the Administration. Pick an agency, you'll find repeated instances where people who's research and inforamtion didn't back up with the Bushies wanted to hear got maginalized and/or fired.

There was ample evidence that Iran and North Korea posed a far greater threat, not to mention the fact that that Afghanistan was still "unfinished business" (oh yeah, how's that going these days?) but no, Bush decided to invade Iraq - perhaps thinking it would be an easier victory than Iran? - and shame on anyone who decided to put there head in the sand and follow him at the time.

But a bigger shame on anyone who still refuses to acknowledge that the Iraq operation has been a fuck-up from day one - based on a lie and planned an carried out by incompetant chicken hawds who still haven't been held accountable for their failures - and can't come up with anything better to defend it than "Hillary, Gore, etc. went along with it, too."

It seems like that was what she was doing, until Mr. Bush decided to (IMO inappropriately) put his hands on her. I'm sure his intention was not to be offensive, but it just seems like an unnecessary time to be massaging someone's shoulders when you are there for serious discussion  I can see why she would find that offensive and/or disrespectful. Does he think that because she's a woman, he can cross a boundary beyond the kind of greeting or gesture he would give if she were a man? It comes off as being condescending.
