Russia really dominated when it was the USSR, using athletes from many countries, but since the split they dont really dominate as much. The USA has always really been a top country in all athletics.

Yeah, but actually that's a really good country with a lot of good athlete who grow up and it's not a thread for the most successful country in sport of all times, .. so china is one of the best country now.

Right now: russia, China, Usa, Australia. Australia rocks for the number of people. They put a lot of money for sports.

JUSTICE4ALL

Well our soccer program is getting better(mens the women are the best) We're the best at the other three, the loses were lack of preperation, time, season, and not the quality teams we can actually put together :), and with golf, it's TOO much talent. Phil and Tiger together have won more majors than the entire European team put together

JUSTICE4ALL
Jul 18th, 2006, 02:32 AM
We're clearly Number 1, then

You have a bunch of countries that can battle for second Russa, China, Australia, France, Germany etc

USA by a landslide. I am not saying that just because I am American, anybody who knows me knows that I am not a "rah-rah GO U.S.A !!!!" type of person. But if you want to look at success in athletics, the US dominates. USSR came close to them during their glory days, but now Russia can no longer compete. The US generates top-notch athletes in almost every major sport, even though many sports get zero attention in the states outside of the Olympic Games.

JUSTICE4ALL
Jul 18th, 2006, 02:53 AM
Yes thats what people don't understand about American athletes. Sports like Swimming, Track and Field, artistic sports, tennis are not popular at all in America. They always throw in the population as if everyone plays sports.

In terms of basketball it is more of a lack of desire more than anything else. The new system is placing guys that want to be on the team on the team rather than begging guys or having key guys quit at the last moment. Even in the 04 olympics it wasn't even debateable which roster had the most talent. That team had 0 chemistry, 0 shooters, and 0 coaching adjustments.

i think its more lack of team-chemistry rather than desire. i also blame those who selected thoseplayers, no pure pointguard, no outside shooters, lack of bigmen and an old school coach. they gave importance to star quality rather than what the team really needs..

Well that team was just put together after basically the first 15 players declined to play. However it was a success, because look how grade Wade and James are now. They are two of the three best players in the world along with Kobe.

yup, but the problem is, instead of replacing them with players that the team needs, they put players that are popular but doesnt fit the team..

sad that kobe wont be playing in the world championship :(

Well, I reckon Australia goes alright in sports. We even play those sports that most other countries don't give a crap about :p (Rugby League, AFL, Cricket, Netball, Rugby Union)

Plus we even made the final 16 in the World Cup of a sport that we completely neglect here. Heck, we don't even know the name of the sport (we call it soccer)

You're right but look at that Tournament of the Americas team that blasted Argentina. That team won on talent alone and if that team were sent to Athens the USA would've won.

When Australia beats Japan in the Olympics all the time?!

A few highlights from Japan's ranking medal tally at the Olympics...

- 1932 Los Angeles, ranked #5.

- 1936 Berlin, ranked #8.

- 1950 Melbourne, ranked #10 (esp. impressive since it was Japan's first Olympics since the end of WWII).

- 1960 Rome, ranked #8.

- 1964 Tokyo, ranked #3.

- 1968 Mexico, ranked #3.

- 1972 Munich, ranked #5.

- 1976 Montreal, ranked #5.

- 1984 Los Angeles, ranked #7.

- 2004 Athens, ranked #5.

(Source: http://www.mapsofworld.com/olympic-trivia/olympic-games-results/medals-by-country.html).

I admit, the Japanese haven't done as well recently because they failed to capitalise on the boom back in the 60s and 70s, but their Olympic history is still more impressive than Australia's :)

because it is a beautiful country and not as polluting as other nations and its population is quite low. Maybe I should add Saudi Arabia to the list since country has Mecca, oil and are rulled by one family. The founder also had the honor of having at least 50 sons from at least 20 different women.

This is the standard the US is held to. Our group sports teams are expected to win outside of soccer and when they don't people start giving doomsday predicitions. If the US doesn't bring home the gold in most group sports it is considered a disaster.
