Camerin, Dulko Win First Title Together in Cincy
CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Playing in just their second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event as a doubles team, Maria Elena Camerin and Gisela Dulko captured their first title together at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open, beating Marta Domachowska and Sania Mirza, 64 36 62, in the final.
Camerin and Dulko, the top seeds, came out slowly, dropping the first two games of the match, but recovered to clinch the first set, 6-4, in 42 minutes. They won the opening game of the second set before the No.3-seeded duo of Domachowska and Mirza reeled off four consecutive games, eventually winning the second set, 6-3, in just over half an hour. After going down 2-1 in the deciding set, however, the Italian-Argentine tandem stepped it up in a big way, going on their own run of five straight games to clinch their maiden title as a team.
"We were a little surprised at how hard they were hitting the ball," said Camerin in the post-match press conference. "None of the teams we played before in this tournament hit it that hard. We were also surprised at how solid they were from the baseline and the net too. It was really tough."
The final was not the winning pair's only three-setter of the week. In the first round, they were forced to come back from a first set bagel to beat unseeded team Maureen Drake and Shikha Uberoi, 06 61 63. Their next two rounds were more comprehensive, a 64 64 victory over Rossana de los Rios and Jelena Jankovic and a 62 62 win over No.5 seeds Emma Laine and Hana Sromova.
Camerin and Dulko played together once before, at the Wimbledon tune-up event in 's-Hertogenbosch last month. They already showed impressive teamwork at that event, reaching the semis. In fact, en route to that semifinal match, they took down a pair that included both eventual singles finalists, Michaella Krajicek and Dinara Safina, before pushing top seeds and eventual winners Yan Zi and Zheng Jie to three sets. Yan and Zheng would not only win that title but also the Wimbledon title. In Cincinnati, Camerin won her third individual career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour doubles title, while Dulko took home her sixth.
Asked if they are planning to play together again soon, the pair were both open to the suggestion: "We would love to play together again, and we probably will, but it all depends on our schedules. If we are going to the same tournaments then maybe we'll play again soon."
MASON, Ohio - The first set of the first match they played this week was a disaster for the top-ranked doubles team of Maria Elena Camerin and Gisela Dulko.
While playing Maureen Drake and Shikha Uberoi in the opening round of the Western & Southern Women's Open, Camerin and Dulko found themselves staring at a 6-0 deficit.
"That was a good start," said a joking Dulko. "But they were playing unbelievable. We said that they wouldn't play like this the whole time. We kept focus and won the match."
And kept winning and winning. It culminated Sunday in their first title together when they beat No. 3 seeds Marta Domachowska and Sania Mirza, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, to win the doubles title.
This was just the second time Camerin and Dulko have played together, and for the second time, they found success. Two tournaments ago in the Netherlands, the two made the semifinals, but this week, they were just a little bit better.
"We have fun, we enjoy to play together and we talk together on the court," said Dulko, who's from Argentina and who communicates with her Italian partner in a mix of Spanish and Italian. "We complement each other a lot."
That, Camerin, is the key. Having fun together on the court has allowed the duo to find success in a short time.
"Very fun," Camerin said. "To play with her always."
Responded Dulko: "She's Italian, so you know Italians. Always joking."
