Junri wasted soooo many SPs in this match. SHe should be preoud of this result though. I have noticed though that she is able to get to a lot of final rounds in tourneys and qualifying like this but then can't finish it out in the last match....something she needs to learn to do better. SHe isn't that young so hope she gets it together this fall and makes the MD in AUSTRALIA!

Just found a nice and old Junri article from 2004

http://www.waseda.jp/student/weekly/contents/2004b/043c.jpg

Ms. Namigata was born in Saitama prefecture in 1982. She graduated from Horikoshi High School, and now she is a senior at the School of Social Sciences. She is in Prof. Haruo Kataoka’s seminar, and is on the tennis team. When she was in the first year of high school, she was one of the 16 best players in the All Japan Tennis Championship. Two years later, she took the crown in the All Japan Junior Tennis Championship. In 2001, she won the intercollegiate doubles championship, was the runner-up in the singles division, and was a member of the championship team in the “Oza” competition. This year, she won the victory in the intercollegiate singles division, and was a member of the team that took the crown in the Kanto Universities’ League. She has received high scores in many other competitions as well. Her hobby is cooking desserts, especially tiramisu and cheesecake.

Ms. Namigata really loves tennis. Influenced by her parents, she has held a racket as long as she can remember. When she was in the third grade, she took the crown in the regional competition. From that point on, her interest in tennnis greatly increased. When she was in junior high school, as soon as class were over, she would go to a well-known tennis school and practice intensively. Unlike ordinary teenage girls, she devoted herself to tennis so that she had no time to chat with her friends or follow the latest fashions. When she was in the first year of high school, she was one of the 16 best players in the All Japan Tennis Championship. Two years later, she took the crown in the All Japan Junior Tennis Championship.

Ms. Namigata decided to go to college because “going professional did not seem like a very attractive choice, although I did think about it”. Still, it was difficult for her to abandon the idea of becoming a professional player. However, "Japanese players can play for a long time. I thought that it would not be too late if I turn professional after I graduated from college," said Ms. Namigata. She chose Waseda because of its attractive facilities.

She has fulfilled the expectations of her teammates. When she was a freshman, she made a brilliant debut at the intercollegiate championships. She took the crown in the doubles and came out second best in the singles. In addition, she led her team to victory in the team competition “Oza”. Since then, however, life at the top has been something of a struggle. The following year, she suffered from backache, and last year, she had to drop out in the fourth round of the intercollegiate singles. “Ever since I entered the university, I had wanted the title of intercollegiate singles.” She resisted her desire to hit balls and concentrated on increasing her strength. That effort made her stronger not only physically but also mentally. This year, she defeated her opponent in the finals with overwhelming power.

Ms. Namigata has decided to become professional player after graduation. “To be active in the demanding world of professional tennis, I will need to be stronger in body and mind. I have a feeling that it will be very hard. But now that I’ve achieved my goals in college, I am looking forward to being a professional and devoting my life to tennis!”, Ms. Namigata said. She came out second best at an international competition held in Korea this spring and is confident that she can compete on the international tennis circuit . She is aiming for a ranking in the top 200 in her first year of international competition. For the immediate future, though, she wants to reach at least the quarterfinals of the Japan Championships this fall. The day is certainly close when the name “Namigata” will resound world-wide in the field of tennis.

I hope she has a good tournament and can get her ranking into the one hundreds. I was at the Wimbledon Qualifying and she was unlucky to draw Anna Fitzpatrick who plays a lot of grass court events.
Later in the week she was with a friend watching Go Soeda's match when it rained, so I gave them my umbrella (only a short shower luckily!). She seems like a really nice person, so I hope she plays well in Japan this week.

-sugi-

Jul 13th, 2007, 03:30 PM
Thanks for the welcome Sugi! Junri was really nice and at first refused because I think she thought I'd get soaked!? However the lady sitting next to me said I could share her umbrella, and Junri and her friend borrowed mine until the shower stopped!
She was very gratefull afterwards.
The first set in her qualifying match was tight and could have gone either way, however in the second she made a few unforced errors and the set quckly slipped away.
Although lower ranked, Anna would have spent the last month playing on grass whilst Junri and the other Japanese players were trying to qualify for Roland Garros on clay so the result is'nt to much of an upset.
Junri seems to be playing well in the Japanese ITF tour recently so I hope she gets some points to move her up the rankings?!

Hi Sugi,
Hope things are good with you? Sorry about the late reply, my connection went down and I'm writing this at an internet cafe before I run off to see her play.Junri was really nice and friendly. I saw her at the qualies last year & she looked out of her depth and I feared the worse after she lost a close first set yesterday, but all credit to her she raced through the tie-break and hardly made an error in the final set.
You could tell how pleased she was at the end when she was hi fiving everyone near her!
I write a report of todays action (along with any of the other players I catch!) later.
Speak to you later!:D

Hi all,
Well after my last post, I drove to the Qualifying event at Rohampton, SW london. I was a bit late and Junri's match was first on court #3 against Yakimova the 16th seed.
Junri played well but lost a close first set.
She looked tired but managed to edge the second and I thought she'd take the third but she made some silly errors:(
She really was tired and lost the final set easily:sad:
After the match she was interviewed by Japanes TV and despite being down she smiled all the way through the interview.
I said to her how unlucky she was & she said thanks with a smile.
Later on she and Ayumi Morita played in the doubles qualifying. They're six seeds and were playing a Russian pair, they started badly and lost the first set making errors but edged the second and raced away in the third!
They were the last match on court today, so there were'nt many people left.As I was chatting to a couple of friends, Junri walked past and smiled at me:hearts:
I think they have to play the second seeds tomorrow but if they win they're into the Wimbledon main draw!
Go Junri and Ayumi!!:bounce:
(Sugi, I've got some picture to post, but may need your advice on the best place/best way to post them?)

By the way, the best way to upload a picture. I recommend www.imageshack.us, it is pretty easy to understand there. Also, if they are big pictures you can be given the chance to rezise them as well. If you need any help, just ask, but it is pretty easy to understand.

Thanks Sugi,
I'll get them up and running this weekend. I went today hoping to see her doubles match. Unfortunatly it was one of the last matches on and I am playing in a tennis tournament myself and had to leave after the first few games; unfortunatly I've just found out that Junri & Ayumi lost in 6-4 in the final set :fiery:
However earlier today I was wondering round the courts and Kumiko & Rika were playing, so I walked onto a slope above the court to get a better view. Who should be standing there watching, on her own with no one around?.. Yep, Junri.
So I walked over and chatted to her for a few minutes. She is really nice and was supporting Kumiko.
I asked if she would'nt mind having our picture taken and she said yes.
I got a passing line judge to take it.
What a day. I think I'd have sacrificed the photo to have her and Ayumi qualify & play at Wimbledon.
Anyway, lets hope she takes her form into her next tournament, and rises up the rankings!:)
Almost forgot; I like most of the Japanese players and Tian Tian Sun and Vania King (who's very funny in person!)

I have to question the mentality of the Japanese players. Surely the whole point of playing tennis is to get your ranking up so that you can play in Grandslams/big tournaments? After failing to qualify for the French Open, why don't the likes of Junri and Tomoko travel to England and play in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne?
Their ranking would have given them direct entry into Nottingham and they would have been high enough to get into the Birmingham qualies and they would have got useful practice on grass prior to Wimbledon qualies. Yet they chose to fly back to Japan to play in a ITF event on carpet!!?!!!
Ironically a couple of years ago when a Japanese player upset a seed at Wimbledon, Pat Cash said he thought Japanese girls would do better at Wimbledon than they had, as they hit the ball flat with little top spin, so their shots are more effective on the grass.
I think you have to question the wisdom of their Federation when the only top players they have is a Kumiko Date who is'nt getting any younger and Ayumi Morita who's career has stalled and seems to be stuck around 60 to 80 in the rankings!:banghead:

Federation has nothing or little to do with the development of the players.

Each player is responsible for her own development, club, coach, etc

I definitely agree on the scheduling part. Kurumi Nara has definitely played a shitty schedule. With better scheduling, she could be closer to the Top 100...

CANADA8
Jun 11th, 2010, 01:42 PM
I agree that the Federation isn't responsible for a player's decisions but it seems that the Japanese Federation have'nt done enough to develop the game in their country as much as say China, who brought in top foreign coaches or France where there are academies that take the most promissing school kids and develop their games.
When I go to Japan, which I do a few times each year, I'm struck by how popular the game is with girls compared to here in the UK. Almost every Japanese girl I talk to was a member of their schools tennis team and the clubs I visit are always packed!
The top players have club matches where big corporations sponser teams, so perhaps they need to feel less comfortable at home and try to push their games in foreign enviroments, on different surfaces. Also I question the fact that all players seem to have a coach who has done nothing themselves as a player is a problem (not just in Japan but here in the UK where low ranked players who acheived nothing, finish their careers and go straight into coaching!?)

Yep, CANADA8 eats a large helping of humble pie and begs your forgiveness!!
Junri did indeed play and performed SO WELL!
I went everyday of the qualifying event. Junri's first round match was a real ding dong battle. She started on fire, racing into a 4-1 over Pliskova, before winning it 6-2. She was holding serve easily in the second, when at 4-5 she threw in 2 double faults and in a sec it was one set all!
The final set was a nail biter with Junri serving for the match 4 times before finally holding her nerve to win 14-12!!:cheer2:
Cue hi-fives all round (including your truley!). In the next round she was up against Bychkova, the 10th seed. Junri started slowly, losing the first set before rallying well to win 3-6 6-4 6-4. I was especially pleased as Bychova said to a Asian line judge who called a Junri shot in; "Just because she's Chinese like you there's no need to give her the point!":fiery:
I chatted to Junri later and she was so pleased and hi-fived me later in the day when we ran into each other.
Alas, the two tough matches finally told and she lost her final match 6-4 6-0.
I was sitting next to her coach and he said that she was feeling tired.
I was so sad as she really deserved to get into a Grand Slam singles draw. Hope she'll be back next year.
(credit to Doi and Nara who were both really friendly and have great futures ahead of them!)

Hey lynxy,

Great photos! Love the ones of Junri, obviously! Sitting at my desk at work looking at them, brings back all the fun of last week! Great tennis, great surroundings, feeling hot when the sun came out (and cold when it went in again!!) and OD'ing on "COSTA" lattes!

Junri is playing in a $50,000 ITF event in Boston this week; hoped she might have hung around and got one of the luck loser spots but alas, no!

Junri is likely to achieve her career best ranking at the tournaments in Asia after the US open:)

After the retirement of Morigami and Nakamura she's my fave Japanese player:lol:

I'm positive she can beat Peers and let's hope she gets a nice MD match as well:D

Welcome to Junri's thread, Boreas :wavey:

Junri lost to Peers :help: and was up a break most of the way in the final set untill the end.
Will she ever qualify for a Grand Slam MD? A really poor loss considered her earlier form.

Anyway, congratulations to Sally for qualifying. :D

What a huge wasted opportunity for Junri. I had a feeling this was going to happen... :banghead: :sobbing:

Vrljic and Lepchenko both came to the Open with much better form and then she somehow loses to Peers:(

She'll be lucky to get another similar chance against an opponent of Peers' caliber.

Still a nice effort beating Vrljic and Lepchenko:hug:

I watched her lose to Dubois today at the Nottingham Challenger. Her game is lovely to watch, beautiful and effortless groundies but she just seems to lack any spirit and seemed completely dejected the whole time. She lost in straights in the end. Junri is obviously lacking in confidence.

Yeah, I was there yesterday. She started off well, but what really cost her the match was her serve. It was all over the place and she must have stopped and caught the ball on the toss about a dozen times!!

Last year at the Wimbledon Qualifying event I was chatting to her American coach, Tim and he said she was playing aggresive and she almost got into Wimbledon as a lucky loser (she lost in the final round of qualifying). This year she's not with Tim and her serve really was poor!?!:(
