Dinara already out of San Diego. :fiery:
6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to Suarez.
And I had 100 in vCash on the match

And I had 100 in vCash on the match

It's so sad. She started so well. The first set was
over very quickly, with a result I obviously approved of.

The second set was a lot more difficult. Suarez was
playing well; she hit lots of lines, and Ms. Safina was a
little more erratic, compared to the first set.

Also, all of Argentina was at the tournament. There was
a big cheering section for Suarez. There were a few of
us cheering for Dinara, but the Argentinians were very loud.

In the third, as you know, Ms. Safina saved quite a few
match points--very strong will. It was good to see.
However, in the last game, Ms. Safina was a bit down
and sloppy, and that was it.

I have tons of photos I'll get up soon, and I will obviously
see Ms. Safina and Ms. Srebotnik play doubles as well.

Oddly, I couldn't find Ms. Safina on the practice courts before her
match. The gossip says that some of the players are practicing
off-site. The resort got rid of some of the tennis courts, so there
are two or three fewer courts than last year.

It's not so great... I can kind of understand why this tournament
is not going to be around too much longer here at La Costa.

Wow, thanks for the match report Mary.
Too bad it had to be a bad one...
I'm looking forward to the photos :)

I don't have my good photo editor with me, so all

Thanks Mary!

Thanks Mary!

Here are some from her match against Suarez. I have
better ones to come, from her first two doubles matches,
and from practice courts (but I haven't uploaded those from
the camera card onto the computer yet.)

p.s. To those of you who think Ms. Safina is playing horribly,
you know, we can be gentle. I think she's having a hard time
right now, and isn't playing badly because she wants to. Suarez
was playing very well, and I think Ms. Safina is working hard on
her serve and forehand. Her practice sessions have been intense
to the point that they were hard to watch (I'm a little frightened
of her coach.)

It's just disappointing because it seemed like Dinara was really building some momentum in the last couple of months. She's always been an on-and-off type of player (not unlike Marat) so it's always disappointing when she goes "off" again. But she has many more tournaments this summer to get over this early loss. :)

Thanks again for the pics Mary :)

Dinara has a first round bye at the Chase Open. Here's her quarter of the top half of the draw:

[9] Ai Augiyama JPN vs. Laura Granville USA
Mariana Diaz-Oliva ARG vs. Qualifier
Vania King USA vs. Qualifer
BYE vs. [5] Dinara Safina RUS

Aug 9th, 2006, 05:35 AM
Dinara def King 1-6 7-5 6-2.
A lot tougher than I'd thought it would be...Doesn't seem to be in the best shape. Lots of work ahead for Dinara if she wants to put a good run in NY together.

Granville upset Sugiyama so the seed is out of Dinara's section.

Also Great pics, thanks:)

Aug 9th, 2006, 11:30 AM
You're right Naomi, the scoreline of that win looks less than impressive :tape:
Still, at least she's on to the third round, so maybe there her play will pick up :)

Aug 10th, 2006, 09:18 PM
Dinara beat Granville 6-2 7-6(2)

Oh, that's fantastic! I wish I could get out of
my meetings today and go to Carson, but I can't.
If she makes it to tomorrow....if she makes it to tomorrow.

Aug 11th, 2006, 04:04 PM
mary, your pics are great!

Aug 16th, 2006, 02:40 AM
Nice pictures Mary! :) Thanks for posting them. Good to see that she looks like she's having fun. And her face is clear again.

She's really a pretty young lady.

Aug 16th, 2006, 09:42 PM
6-2 6-2 for Dinara

Aug 17th, 2006, 08:16 PM
Dinara over Perry 7-5, 6-3 :D

Aug 18th, 2006, 06:21 PM
myxomatosis--are you attending Rogers Cup? If so, can we
have some reports? How does Ms. Safina look in practice, etc?

Aug 18th, 2006, 06:56 PM
Hey Mary

I was in Montreal on Monday and Tuesday, but because Sharapova pulled out, Dinara got a first round bye and I didn't get to see her play :(
She must be the only player there I didn't get to see practicing either.
However, I did see her walking around the grounds and none of the fans really seemed to recognise her so I just wished her good luck and she smiled and said thanks. I wanted to ask for a picture but I'm too shy and had turned bright red at that point
Anyway, it made my day!

Aug 18th, 2006, 06:56 PM
Also, I'm Laura :)

Aug 18th, 2006, 08:39 PM
Hey Laura! I'm glad you got to speak to her,
however briefly. She's a doll when she smiles,
isn't she?

Aug 18th, 2006, 10:44 PM
Dinara and Katarina Srebotnik have just defeated Nathalie Dechy and Ai Sugiyama in the doubles 7-6 3-6 6-2

Hope Dinara doesn't get worn out from all this tennis!

Laura ur lucky u got to speak to her...i missed her in sydney because my friends are idiots

Aug 19th, 2006, 03:40 AM
Did y'all hear about Marat's car accident? Apparently
Ms. Safina heard about it right before her match.

No wonder she had a short match! (Good for her to keep

Aug 19th, 2006, 07:00 PM
Yeah, poor Dinara. Luckily it didn't distract her from winning :D And Marat seems to be alright so that's really good news.
I can't wait to watch her match against Ana tonight on TV! Ana's been playing really well this week though so it's going to be tough...

Aug 19th, 2006, 07:28 PM
Dinara's got a horrid draw for New Haven, this is her quarter

Anastasia Myskina (8) vs Dinara Safina
Maria Kirilenko vs Na Li
Anabel Medina Garrigues vs Qualifier
Bye vs Justine Henin-Hardenne (2)

Aug 20th, 2006, 06:08 PM
Yeah, and right now, I wonder if/when she'll get to New Haven!
This is a really strange thing. For example, if she wins her SF
(not a given), she'd have to play the final, her doubles SF (and
if she and Ms. Srebotnik win that, play the doubles final!)

Plus there are all the other players involved in both singles and
doubles! Some have commitments to New Haven, but not all of
them. What are they going to do? (I feel for the fans, as well,
both in Montreal and in New Haven.)

Aug 21st, 2006, 12:04 AM
I almost hope Dinara loses to Myskina. She's been playing an awful lot of tennis lately, and a few days off before the US Open couldn't hurt.

Aug 21st, 2006, 03:48 AM
It'll be interesting; Ms. Safina just killed Ms. Myskina
at Indian Wells this year. (However, I think Myskina is
playing a lot better now than she was in March.)

Aug 21st, 2006, 03:55 AM
Dina lost 1-6 4-6. lost 3 games in a row. Then lost dubs 2-6 2-6 which was played indoors because of rain. So overall probably didn't waste a lot of energy today.

I hope Dinara withdraws from New Haven. She is only playing singles this week I think at least. I'd love Dinara to get another win over Myskina. Beating compatriats gives players a lot of confidence. But resting for US Open is more important.

Aug 21st, 2006, 03:57 AM
Dinara just played her 3rd career tier I semi.

Moscow 2005.
Rome & Montreal 2006.

Another very good result for Dinara - took advantage of the draw.
Dina will rise to 13 on Monday and get a top 12 seeding in New York.

Aug 23rd, 2006, 06:19 PM
That's fantastic for Dinara.
Last year she improved upon 2004 and this year she's improved on 2005 in terms of consistency and being there late into big tourneys. If she can continue this into the fall indoor circuit, it will really be a breakthrough year for her.

Aug 23rd, 2006, 09:41 PM
Dinara's seeded 12 for the US Open next week. This is her quarter, possible 4th round encounter with Martina Hingis

Amelie Mauresmo (Fra) (1) v Qualifier
Meghann Shaughnessy (USA) v Roberta Vinci (Ita)
Mara Santangelo (Ita) v Lisa Raymond (USA)
Sybille Bammer (Aut) v Nathalie Dechy (Fra) (13)
Daniela Hantuchova (Svk) (17) v Bethanie Mattek (USA)
Lourdes Dominguez Lino (Spa) v Serena Williams (USA)
Melinda Czink (Hun) v Aiko Nakamura (Jpn)
Vera Dushevina (Rus) v Ana Ivanovic (Ser) (16)
Dinara Safina (Rus) (12) v Qualifier
Juliana Fedak (Ukr) v Qualifier
Alexa N Glatch (USA) v Jarmila Gajdosova (Svk)
Viktoria Kutuzova (Ukr) v Flavia Pennetta (Ita) (18)

Kaia Kanepi (Est) v Stephanie Foretz (Fra)
Maret Ani (Est) v Virginie Razzano (Fra)
