As best I can tell, Masha will take a break until the Acura Classic in San Diego, California. A part of the US Open Series, it is a Tier I played on hardcourt. Main draw play starts July 31, 2006. Thanks to Dan23 for providing the current players list. Masha is currently in the #19 position.

Oho, all the Top players committed to play there! This isn't that good because now its possible that Makiri will get again a tough draw. Especially after her dissapointing first round loss at Wimbley she needs a good draw and some good matches to "recover".

You have to beat the top player when you want to stay in the top 20. I believe in her strengths. Go Maria :D

Good news, and bad news. Good news first. The San Diego draw for singles has been posted so we can start talking about tennis again! And Masha got a seed - #16. The bad news... Masha is in the group of 8 with the #1 seed Kimmy C. And draws Jelena Jankovic in the first round, my goodness Jelena is ranked in the 20s just like Masha. If Masha can get through to the second round, it appears to get easier. The third round would bring Kimmy.

CLIJSTERS, Kim #1 seed vs BYE

STOSUR, Samantha vs DECHY, Nathalie

BONDARENKO, Alona vs RUBIN, Chanda

JANKOVIC, Jelena vs KIRILENKO, Maria #16 seed

Chanda Rubin? Man, I didn't even know she was still playing.

Jankovic is a tough 1st round opponent but I think it is all in Maria's hands. Maria needs to come out aggressive and strong. It is in her and she should be well rested. Come on Maria! You can do this.

Pfew.. very tough 1st round draw for Maria.. But maybe that might be good for her. In lots of her previous first rounds she was drawn to quite "unknown" players or better say not that top ranked players... Out of her 4 last played tournaments she lost 3 first rounds (facing players she had to beat)..

Hope Maria's hardcourt season will be starting well. Hope she can play aggressive.. would give her some confidence !

Go Masha ! :) :wavey:

She is playing doubles with Ana Ivanovic. In the first round they play Bondarenko/Bondarenko (UKR). If they win that, then they will face the number 3 seeds, Hantuchova/Sugiyama... which could be tough!

Nice to be back talking about Makiri after a long layoff. If only I could go out and see her since she is actually within driving distance for a change. Alas, I'll follow the live scoring like everyone else, and will try to update for Walt if I can, though I can only promise to be half as thorough as him when he updates.

Jelena will be tough. I wouldn't have said this in March as her results were quite horrible, but she recently took a set off of Clijsters at Palo Alto. She also has not lost in the first round since mid-May in Berlin. At that time she had lost 10 of 12 matches to start off the year. She has won 17 of her last 25 matches including a win over Venus Williams at Wimbledon. This is definitely a test for Makiri.

Not fun for Makiri fans.

There’s been a rash of 1st set blow-outs against Makiri. But she usually plays much stronger in the 2nd. There’s still hope yet! Maybe Makiri needed to get the rust out, while JJ has just played the previous week.

Public faith for Maria has really slipped. She was favored slightly in V-betting, but everyone jumped on the Jankovic bandwagon (or off the Kirilenko bandwagon)

San Diego: J. Jankovic vs. M. Kirilenko (Tennis)

Outcome Odds Total Bets Total Staked
J. Jankovic 8/11 F (0.73) 56 61615
M. Kirilenko 11/10 (1.10) 13 607

I must confess that I put V-cash on Jankovic, but only because I bet superstitiously against Makiri, a la Peter Graf. I'm sad to say that going against Makiri is a good bet these days.

It is time for Maria to get a coach, a real coach. She has a lot of talent and she needs a coach to bring it out of her. She needs a coach who will help her game and motivate her. I want her to do well so badly and these losses are killing me.

Kirilenko needs two things:

1. Split from her father and start to be independent (she is nearly 20 year old woman after all !)

2. Find a good coach...

This year is lost anyway, she will drop to 35 or so by the end of year, but she can regroup next year... but only if she will split from her father and find a proper coach...

He's as bad a Yuri S, but Sharapov is ok for now because Maria is winning, Yuri K doesn't have that luxury. Hopefully she'll get fed of losing and will dump him and take some action!

Unfortunately, that rarely happens. The Bad Dads have a tremendous hold over their daughters; it's easy to make the whole situation the daughter's fault ("You would dare to break up this family?") and guilt-trip the kid into mediocrity. Mary Pierce is one of the rare players to give Daddy the boot and go on to have great success afterward.

The sad thing is that families often break up over tennis success. Many, if not most, of the top players of recent years have come from homes that were either dysfunctional/broken before they turned pro, or split up after the daughter has some tennis success. (Look at the current Top Ten.) I would certainly hope that there isn't family turmoil brewing among the Kirilenkos-- forget about the impact on MK's tennis; a stable family is far more important than ranking points.

The recent news isn't encouraging, but while YK seems to be a meddler, is he really a menace?

Her Father comes across as a greedy grasping man. Maria was making good steady progress under her old coach. But thats was not enough for Yuri K.

Nor is Maria a "Model" girl. She seems to me as a quite, reserved even conservative girl. They are trying to make her into something she is not.

I just wish her well, and much success (With or without her Dad)

You are right Jim. Maria is a quiet and shy girl. She is very friendly but at times she seems to not relish in the attention directed her way.

If her dad wants his daughter to succeed, he needs to take a step back and let her be who she is, not force her to be something. He is not a coach and needs to let someone else take over the reins. For Maria's sake, I hope he has enough sense to realize this.

I'm not really questioning this; I'm legitimately asking what YK has done-- other than firing the coach-- that he has this reputation. All I know is what Tarpischev has said, and the report about the coach being fired. What else has YK done that makes him "a greedy grasping man?"

Team Ivanolenko wins!

6-1, 6-4 over Team Bondarenko.

Feels good to be on the winning side again, even if it's just doubles.

I think he comes across as greedy because he didn't like giving away Makiri's prize money. I suppose he thought she was winning so he could get rid of the coach and she would continue at that same level. Well we can see that hasn't happened, so he'll have to prize his hands away from Makiri's winnings and get her a coach.

Ana and Maria lost in the doubles in 3 sets. Too bad, not a very good tournament for Maria

Sad indeed, with the loss in doubles in the second round, San Diego has concluded for Masha. AnaMaria took the first set, but lost badly in the second. It was 2-2 in the third before Daniela's team took control. One point to note is that it got too dark to play on the court where they started the match, so in the middle of the third set they moved the match to a better lighted court. For the record to wrap up this thread:

D. HANTUCHOVA (SVK)/A. SUGIYAMA (JPN) defeated A.IVANOVIC (SCG)/M. KIRILENKO (RUS) 6-7(6) 6-1 6-3

Masha moves on to Los Angeles, about a two hour drive north. She takes with her a four match losing streak in singles. She made it to the second round in LA last year (where she lost to Sharapova who was completing her push to get the #1 ranking) so after 5 weeks of having no points to defend, Masha has a second round achievement to match in LA.

What did Tarpischev say?

And it's just speculation on our part now, I have not heard of anything bad about Maria's dad actually, so it's very surprising for me to read these last few posts on this thread.
