View Full Version : Question: Can a player use her cell phone DURING a match???

Do you remember when Maria whipped out her Motorola after winning some tournament and making a phone call? Well, I have a question. Is a player allowed to make a phone call during the changeover? Someone I know claims that it is allowed as long as the umpire determines that the player is not calling her coach. That sounds like BS to me. Can anyone clear it up???

It's a new rule that you can't have any such devices like that.

Is there really any need for a player to use a cell phone during match? What are they going to do make a dentist appointement in the middle of the match.

Or at least making sure the logo is facing the camera so when the TV comes back after commercials, they'll be sure to show said player on the cell phone. :)

"Hi, this is Serena Williams, and I'd like to buy these earrings please."

"Yes, the match can wait! I'm the fucking Serena Williams!"

I highly doubt it. And if they are allowed, they shouldn't be, there's no need for it, plus how would you know they weren't getting coaching advice?

I have no problem with players calling their friends or family after winning a big tournament though.

Well, after a match itīs no problem I think. Mauresmo called her girlfriend after winning the Aussie Open, Dani messaged someone after winning the US Open mixed doubles, etc...But every player has her cell phone with her on court...even if they donīt wanna call someone. Ok, you never see players like Daniela and Nastya without their cell phone going anywhere :p You can see it in almost every pic. Probably part of the contract of Sony Ericsson

I do, before the presentation.

After the presentation, call whomever you want and do whatever you want.

Before the presentation, it's tacky and overdone. And I hate seeing them crawl up into the stands to hug someone too. :tape:

Just wait 15 minutes then do whatever you want. But all that stuff before the presentation really bugs me.

what I know, so the players can use cell phone after match, no during the match.
