View Full Version : who will break the record of venus' 127 mph serve?

hingisGOAT
Jun 27th, 2006, 12:49 AM
correct me if i'm wrong, but venus served a 127 mph bomb in 1998.

it is now 2006.

the racquet technology has improved tremendously; look at hingis, now throwing in an occasional 110 mph bomb, whilst maxing out at around 100 mph before her first retirement. the number of girls who can serve 110+ has improved dramatically; now, nearly every top 20 player has the capability to do so. certainly, the quality of service among the tour as a whole has been the most obvious improvement of the last few years.

yet, nobody has come close to breaking venus' record. not even venus herself.

who will do it? a young girl like vaidisova, ivanovic? or none of the current top players, but instead someone who has yet to make their mark on the game?

Serena served 129, 128, and 130 at 2004 WTA Champs final that were out by inches.
She hit a 126 ace at 2004 Wimbly 3rd Round (and Venus' serve was 127 btw)

Serena's come the closest. If she's healthy, come the USO and the fast indoor court season, she should break it some time soon.

I don't see anyone else besides Serena coming close anytime soon. Kuznetsova is really the only one that comes close in terms of leg strength (the source of power on serves), but her service motion isn't conducive to big bombs...so who knows....

Ivanovic possibly or Sprem, she can serve pretty hard.

Kenny

Serena can do it. Venus can do it. Petrova might able to do it. Kuzzy could do it.

I think it will be a young player, someone who likes to come out & just try to hit the hell out of the ball, which is kind of how Vee was when she set the record. She has said something to that effect herself. Someone strong like Ivanovic or Kuznetsova maybe...

Dementieva.

on a second serve.

Tennace
Jun 27th, 2006, 01:26 AM
Kuznetsova hit a 126 MPH at the 2004 USO, very close

I think Venus herself may even break it. Other players who might are Sharapova or Ivanovic. Also, Nicole has a strong serve, and Alex said she hasnt even started weight training so it will only get bigger. I think it may be broken sometime within the next couple years.

If Brenda was a little bit younger, she would probably do it. The fact that she served 124 mph back in the 90s is amazing. With today's racquets she would have broken 130.

And her serve is still one of the best in women's tennis.

She doesn't serve that high anymore, though. When was the last time she hit one at 125?

Derek.
Jun 27th, 2006, 02:28 AM
Sharapova doesn't serve that fast. If you look at the fastest serve thing, a lot of times, Sharapova isn't even on there. So to the people who said she has the best chance, that's not right. :o

She hit a 198 KPH (which is 123 MPH I think) at the French Open this year in her match against Sprem or Schnyder.

MARIA DOES NOT SERVE THAT HARD!!! Gosh people:p . Maria has an awesome serve, but she has never broken 115. She goes for placement and spin a lot more than sheer power.

Venus and Serena still consistently serve five MPH above the top players. Ivanovic is usually above 120 for at least one serve per tournament, but she doesn't really place it that well which is why her serve isn't outstanding. As I remember, Stosur hits it hard too, but I don't see either of them breaking the record. Maybe Vaidisova? but in reality, I'd have to go with someone we haven't heard of yet, or else Venus or Serena.

actually, that 126 by kuznetsova at the US Open 2004 was a mistake, by the final, her fastest serve was changed to 115, and i dont think she can go much higer than that. The only person see breaking venus' record is a healthy serena, maybe sprem, ivanovic or vaidisova indoors

i really wonder what dementieva's hardest serve is...
maybe like 103 mph :o

but seriously, watch it be elena. she has the build to hit a fast serve and since her serve sucks, i bet she's gonna go all out on a 2nd serve and hit a 130 mph fluke second serve. i would not put it past her.

No, she won't. She has absolutely no idea what she's doing when it comes to the serve. It's ridiculous. It's fixable, and she refuses to do anything about it.

Today against Martina, Olga Savchuk served a few at about 119 and it looked quite easy for her, plus she is only 17 or 18 so maybe her...how fast does Nicole serve? She could possibly do it soon...Venus could as well at this tournament, she doesn't normally serve at 125 anymore but she definitely can as she has proven!

I'm thinking Serena Williams will break it. She certainly has the capability. As John McEnroe said at the 2004 US Open QF, I think Serena will be the first woman to break 130. She's just so strong, specifically the legs.

Serena has been damn close. Venus if she feels like she wants to rip a serve and Ivanovic has gotten around 120 so I can see her maybe in a few years pumping the serve speed up.

But why are people saying Maria? Ive barely ever seen her try and hit a huge serve.

Brenda had to change her service motion because of her back though. So her serve ain't that hard anymore. She can still serve above the 110 mph with ease though.

I would say Ana and Serena are the only ones who can break the record. Not that it matters because placement is way more important.

Note that Amelie Mauresmo serves with a 3/4 motion to save strain on her back - but still hit a 120 mph serve at Wimby. People forget how much power she actually has for when she decides to unleash it.
