How can we still watch this WC full of dubious referee decisions ? How can we still believe the fair-play in this competition ? How can we still believe in the FIFA ? This WC is turning into a big joke ! What an abissimal level of refereeing ! All they want is the big teams to go through : That's the hard fact of each WC !

Or maybe sven will do that anyway

Yeah it does suck. Its a little less fun watching your team win this way, and little more frustrating watching your team lose this way.

Something should be done.

i know there will be others who say that ref is human too..people make mistakes.. we have the privilege of instant replay and they have nothing.. but SURELY with the ref, linesmen and officials.. there would be fairer decisions.. i mean all these bad decisions almost every night make them look bad..

Tonight's ref was definitely the worst. Graham Poll was incompetent but at least he didn't decide the match. Tonight's ref OTOH, decided Italy was to be the winner. Shocking.

(the ref for the Switzerland-Ukraine match is doing pretty well though. Not all refs are bad, it's just that there have been so many bad calls that we don't really notice when a ref is doing a good job)

But to me, the Spain-Korea match at last WC is still the worst when it comes to refereeing. I was really furious after that match, swore I'd never watch another football match again, felt like they were taking us for fools. That ref was either bribed or didn't dare go against the home crowd.

I must say Germany's done an excellent job. When I compare this WC to Euro 2000 in Belgium, there's a world of difference. Before the tournament started, the press, the police kept on going on and on about how they'd defeat hooliganism, about the security measures, about how the match in Charleroi was such a high risk match. There were camera crews from all over the world, paying a fortune to get a good view of the town square because they were expecting riots. And whadyaknow, there were riots!! What did they expect? The police was basically challenging the hooligans.

German police is handling the situation a lot better. They didn't tell the people who didn't have tickets to stay away, no, they said everyone was welcome. There was never so much talk and focus on hooliganism, it was always about the game. And it's paying off. Apart from a few minor scuffles, fans have behaved very well and I believe it's because the German police, unlike Belgian police, isn't challenging them.

So good job, Germany!

LIST OF BAD REFEREES AND THEIR SHOT TO FAME IN WORLD CUP 2006:-

Graham Poll in Croatia v Australia.... :tape: (Abmysal Rating: ****)
Fail to send player off after 2 yellow cards - only show red after 3rd yellow showed. Giving a throw in to Croatia, but then reverses it decision and awards it instead to Australia when another ball rolls onto the pitch and kicked away by a Croatian player. Failed to award Australia a penalty kick for blatent handball in the penalty area.

Larrionda in Italy v USA... :cuckoo: (Abmysal Rating:****)
Three red Cards in the space of 15 minutes (2 in 1st half, another in the 2nd half), whereby two of them are straight Reds (which should be yellow).

Ivanov in Portugal v Holland... :smash: (Abmysal Rating: *****)
Four Reds. 16 Yellows. Failed to control the match. What can be said more?

Medina Cantalejo in Italy v Australia... :banghead: (Abmysal Rating: ***)
Failed to spot a handball by an Italian player. Awarding the "softest" penalty ever seen in World Cup history, causing the Aussies to lose at the very last second.

This World Cup is a memorable one... for referees, that is...

actually i don't mind if it's really really hard to tell for the ref to make a decision but sometimes the obvious ones with 1 ref and 2 linesmen and nobody catches anything? or even worse, refs who can't tell apart diving and tripping.. and over-exagerration like the portugal match, no offence, but figo was so dramatic! i know it must have hurt for him but seriously, he's full of drama.. haha

I agree Germany has done a great job, and it looks so lovely too. I've only ever been to Boon and Berlin, plus the drive from Bonn to Slazburg, but that was when I was little. I still remember it though, it was beautiful. But I can't watch the matches. I still hear Hand of God, Hand of God when I watch football now!

I agree, they dont have a chance to win the WC...but again there isnt any team in this WC that deserves to win it,all are so mediocre(maybe Argentina is making a worthly effort)...Yesterday's match between Ukraine and Switzerland was pathetic and boring

We made the last 16 and yet lost more repsect for what the world cup is. Italy were always going to be a better team...but Australia held them.

This "International game" is terribly a hoax.!

Australia in the 40's (ranking wise)....continual bad ref's (hello opponent had 3 yellow's)....and knowing the top 4 Italian teams have been nailed for fixing matches in their league...containing 13 players of those 4 clubs.

Of Italian managers threatening "violence" in their own league....should we kick back here in Australia and believe it hasn't happened at the WC?

Soccer has taken 3 steps forward through this however....I liken it to Gymnastics at the Olympics. If you are unknown?....you will be unknown!;)

I agree.
But Australia had another penalty denied early on when Simunic threw Viduka down like a wrestler.

And Grosso yesterday threw himself over Neill

Another mistake was, when Heinze wasn't sent of in the Argentina vs. Mexico game.

Not an Azzurri fan by any means, but I think it's the opposite. They are usually hugely unlucky.

EC 2004 - eliminated at group stage due to Denmark and Sweden's 2-2 nightmare result
WC 2002 - knocked out in controversial fashion by Korea in extra time in round of 16
EC 2000 - lost in final to a French golden goal
WC 1998 - lost penalty shootout to eventual champs France
EC 1996 - just sucked then
WC 1994 - lost World Cup final in shootout
EC 1992 - sucked in qualifying
WC 1990 - eliminated by Argentina on home turf in semis. Penalty shootout.

FIFA must think that controversial decisions may be good for the game. After all, Maradona's 'hand of God' helped boost his popularity though of course he was also a good player. However he is not the best player. One current one who is better than him is Ronaldo.

Wouldn't exactly say hugely lucky in any of these cases. In 2000 they did have luck on their side against the Netherlands, but they came into that semi after maximum points in the group stage and a nice 2-0 over Romania in the QF.

In 1990 they had the crazy Schillaci - and 1994 the genius Roberto Baggio. Over the last 16 years I can't think of a more consistently unlucky side.

All teams had an unlucky moment becoz of a referee for sure once.

Ofcourse it was no penalty in the Australia - Italia match, but did Materazzi deserved to be send off? Don't think so....
