View Full Version : Navratilova's 2 cents on the equal pay

When Martina was on the Jonathan Ross show, they asked her about the equal pay dispute. Obviously Martina said the pay should be equal, but then she talked about some of the arguments against equal play and said 'they argue that men play best of 5, women best of 3 but the women are WILLING to play best of 5 but the powers that be wont let us'!!

Hello!! This is news to me!!

It was the players who lead the decision to change the WTA Championships FInal to be reduced from best of 5 to best of 3, at the time I recall players arguing the 5 set match was too taxing on them at the end of a long year..

I dont know what Martina was on about there.. Does anyone else know anything about the ladies being willing to play best of 5?

I hope women are granted their wish... However, before really pushing it, they should watch Martina H. vs. Steffi YEC Championship match from a few years back and see how one of the fittest players in the history (Steffi) was struggling in that 5th sets. And maybe talk to her too...

Oh come on, I can say it too that I want to play 5 sets if I know it will never happen.
There are players that after 2 sets are already very tired.

They shouldn't make the women play best out of 5, they would end up getting long and boring and more players would get injured more of the time and there is already enough of that!

Actually, I'm thinking that the men should be reduced to 3 sets. Hell, @ Wimbledon(=), they start @ 1pm(which is absurd), and there are almost always rain delays. If they don't wanna start the match play in @ least the late morning, then they should play shorter matches.

Playing 5set for Venus would be horrible. I think she's not aware of her injuries she had in the past.

Maybe there are some players who would like to play best of 5, but i doubt thats what all the girls want.

I don't think they should play 5 sets... look how many injuries there are already. If the GS matches were longer, thats not going to help at all.

Some people complain about the length of the season and the number of tournaments they have to play, but they want to have longer matches? That does not make sense to me.

i think quarter finals onwards, or heck even just the final to be 5 sets would be gret..for both mena dn women

i would get too bored if all matches were best of 5, and a womans body isnt the same as a mans..they wont recover as easily..

Agree with Pureracket: during a time when folks are recommending reduction of men's GS matches to best of 3 till the quarters, I'm reading this "we can play best of 5, too" argument as sheer bluff.

No matter how many sets you play, Its the same revenue for the tournament organizers.

I'd like best of five only in finals of important tournaments. I dislike watching those  boooring  GS men's matches... Only finals should be best of five, also for women.

They should cut the men down too. It gets kind of boring sometimes being that long.

Heck i am already sick of the ATP 5 set snoozefests...The pay has nothing to do with sets played....Let the men play play best of three....That way i could watch a whole match without catching Andy Griffith reruns during the 2&3 sets

This is one of the main problems with Wimbledon. They should start no later than 11am. It's just common sense! :)

They can't start earlier due to dew...(apparently)

I remember Martina saying the same thing about ten years ago when she was asked about the same topic at Wimbledon.

I've never heard any other woman player say they want to play five sets so I'm not sure if she's speaking for the majority.

That was my point all along - one of the current players with the exception of Martina H. know what they are talking about if they actually support 5 setters ;)
