View Full Version : When/how/why did you become a Maria fan?

I don't know if this thread topic was made before, but I think it's great to start it.

I became a Maria fan in April of 2005 when I saw her beat Justine Henin-Hardenne in Miami. I was amazed how well she played. Then I was rooting for her in the final against Kim Clijsters, that's when I found out she won Wimbledon. After that I followed her on tv waiting for tournaments she entered and searched for fansites about her. It's because of her I started playing tennis.

I think its kinda eurosports fault,I got rid of my sky sports late 2003 and only had ES and I love watching sports and kinda noticed her there,of course wim 2004 helped :) the why was not because of her looks but her attitude, fist pumping will to win etc on court.

Well, I think I may be one of the people who has liked/known her for the shortest time!
I watched Wimbledon 2005, and that's when I really got into tennis, I used to play tennis as a kid, but don't ever remember liking to watch it. But Maria caught my eye then, and she's the main one I follow.
Just liked the way she came out on court and played her game.
Also didn't hurt that I saw a repeat of the 2004 final, which just made me fall in love with her game!

When? also said it a few times before but I first saw Maria during the AO in 2002. How? Saw her name in the results first and thought 'Sharapova' sounded like a good name  then saw a pic from the presentation after the final of her holding the toy kangaroo :hearts: Why? Doesnt need explaining....

Edit: ....this pic is enough to explain the 'why?'

First time i saw her was during the Wimbledon '04 QF v Sugiama. Flicked the tv on towards the end of the second set, and just that determination, and sublime ball striking had me hooked. She's the reason i became interested in Tennis. feels like i'm only a newbie!

When: 28th June 2003, when she beat Jelena Dokic (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/dokic/) in the third round of Wimbledon and I didn't mind.

How: To induct a player into my Eternal Fanship, I make a vow to follow her for the rest of her career (or my life) with the same level of dedication as the players of whom I'm already an Eternal Fan, to the maximum extent that my personal circumstances and available resources will allow. This vow is permanent and irrevocable, and I seal it with my Word of Honour.

Why: Because she's a brilliant player; I especially love her flairsome power. I only induct a player into my Eternal Fanship if I can justify it in terms of her tennis-qualities; see my Maria Sharapova Biography (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/biography.html) for details.

*2002?? ;)

Agree, Dan. That should have been 2002. Maria was already playing in the "Ladies" by 2003 Wimbledon.

Wimbledon 2002 was also the first time I became a Maria fan. Saw her picture on ESPN, but ESPN's file pic of her was from the AO girls final, so she wasn't wearing all-white.

I never figured out why they named her a Kournikova-clone. I've said this before: Anna never appealed to me the way Maria did.

(I was never in the Anna bandwagon in the first place. I actually think Hingis is more appealing.)

As to why? If you have to ask...

I'm not a fan of Masha but I dislike the hate around her here on wtaworld and maybe on the wtatour... You always can count on me if some idiots bash her without any valid reason... And as I already have told, I like a lot Dan23 which is a real true fan : such fans have my entire respect !

I became a fan at AO 2005, when I first got into tennis, I heard the shriek and that was that! At first it was because she was so hot, then I loved her intensity, now I love everything about her! All my friends know her as my future wife, current girlfriend ;) I know, a little creepy

Okay then, one more time ;)

when: Wimbledon 2003
how: I saw an interview after her third round win over Dokic and I immediately liked her.
why: many different reasons, her power game, her fighting spirit, her looks, her determination and her fun personality

Wimbledon 2003.
How? By turning on the TV at the perfect time. :)
The 'why' is a bit more tricky question. I guess what struck me first was her attitude. She was playing with such determination and when she went on to reach the 4th round she was celebrating almost like she had won the tournament. :) It was just so refreshing to watch her, it seemed like she was having the time of her life but still being a total professional about it at such a young age. She has such an exciting personality. She was cute too ofcourse but she was just a kid back then. Since then I started watching her whenever I had the chance, and here I am three years later, completely head over heels :inlove: . :D

Well I am the odd one out it seems! :p

First time I saw Masha play was 3rd round Wimby 04 when she beat my darling Daniela... The hatred a felt for her was incredible and I remember bitching to mum for days about that stupid teenager, with the ugly long earrings (I have changed my opinion of them now too), who jumped around and screamed like a bloody arrogant brat... Like I said, intense hatred... That only lasted for the next 2 rounds and by the time it was the SF and Final of Wimby 04 I couldn't help but love her, and I cried my eyes out at 1am when she won! Oh the memories! :awww:

Her game play was a MAJOR part as to why it was so short a time for me to change my opinion but I also warmed up to her bubbly personality so I couldn't help but want her to beat the shit out of Serena! :p

Now you all know my horrible secret! :tape: :o ;)

I've been a Maria fan since the final of the Zurich Open in 2004. She lost the finals against Molik in three tough sets, I remember.
What amazed be about her, is her great fighting spirit. I liked (still like!) her attitude on court, the whole 'Come on!'s and the positive vibe coming from her. I also admired her for her achievements at already such a young age. It's simply unbelievable!:worship:

First time I have ever seen her play live, so now I am supporting her more and more. so great seeing her, didn't get to speak to her though she was only a few meters away from me.

Well, I think I have you all beat as the most recent fan. It was the 2006 US Open and probably for a very different reason to why you may be a fan of Maria's. I have been a big fan of tennis since I was around 8 years old when I started to play. So it's been 34 years as I'm 42; a very immature 42. :) Of course I knew of her before the US Open but became a fan after I was inspired by her win to get my life in order and to focus on losing the excess pounds I desperately wanted to; I've lost 25 so far. I wrote about "The Sharapova Connection" in my blog (http://imaveggieon.blogspot.com/search?q=%22Sharapova+Connection%22).

Im not going to lie i was first alerted to Maria because i thought she was beautiful saw her on TV and i had seen her in the newspaper in the early stages of the fortnight. Then people at my work experience would have Wimbledon on and she would be playing and i started following Maria's Wimbledon progress. I had always liked tennis but not to the extent i would follow it. So Maria introduced me into a whole new sporting world and im greatful for that. Of course being a male im alerted to beautiful females and that was the first reason but now i follow her more then my favourite football team, i got alot more upet over Maria failing to win grandslams then when my country fails to win the world cup(football). Of course beyond the Wimbledon fortnight i started watching her on Eurosport checking out her sites etc and i got to know Maria Sharapova beyond the looks and i wasn't let down at all, i love her style, personallity everything really, the videos i watched definatly made a huge impression on me, this wasn't going to be a little celebrity fantasy i knew she was something much more special then a pretty face. So now it has gone way beyond liking her just because of looks and i know im a very dedicated and i mean very dedicated fan and im very proud to say it and no matter what happens i will be oen of her top fans to the very end. Tennis is now my favourite sport i would say, im not sure but i definatly show more emotion towards it so i guess that means it is?

I was a Maria's hater!

She ruined Serena's 2004 season. She ruined Nastya's 2004 YEC. Enough to hate her as hell!
I was sooooooooo happy when Reena beat her at Malbourne teh following year!

So I kept on hating her until the 2005 US Open SF. I was rooting for Trova in the quarter but I wanted Maria to beat fatty Kim in the semies because that bitch had kicked Venus out of the tournament! Maria struggled with her game that day. But I admired her bravery in the second set! That changed it all! Plus her game really really pleases me. She plays like Venus, I love that kind of game.

Ladies Quarterfinal Day at Wimbledon 2004.

I hadn't watched women's tennis in several years owing to the fact that an ex girlfriend hated sports. Fortunately, that didn't work out, and Wimbledon '04 was the first time I actually paid attention in years. ESPN was showing the Sugiyama/Sharapova match that day.

She struck me as unusually pretty for a tennis jock, which was why I didn't flip the channel. However, within minutes, my fixation changed from her looks to her unbelieveably electric game. Watching her come back from a set down to gain the Wimbledon semis at 17 was exciting. There was something undeniably magical about her. It was Chris Evert redux. I knew right there on the spot that she was going to be the future of women's tennis.

In the years since, Maria has impressed me more and more each time I watch her. She's possibly the most mature and level headed 19 year old I have ever seen, articulate, professional, focused, gracious in defeat, and always wanting to improve herself. She doesn't make excuses or lay blame on others, unlike so many in her sport. Not too many people her age have those same kinds of qualities--at least not in that abundance.

She is an impressive young woman.

Well since Birmingham 2003 I knew of the existence of Masha and I was mesmerized by her. Thanks to Masha (and of course Mary Pierce) I re found my love for women's tennis. Since Steffi retired I really missed a player who touched my 'tennis soul' (sound corky I know), but then came Masha and you know what, I'm loving tennis as much as I ever did, perhaps even more. So I didn't love her in that very moment although she mesmerized me even back then (Birmingham), but Masha grew on me throughout the years and now I'm a Masha addict

I saw her play Peer in the first round and I just thought she was gorgeous and of course knew she was the best player as she was world number 1 at that point and won wimbledon. from then on I supported her and tried to watch and follow every match of her's.

Okay I know this is wierd

When: Rite after Winbly 04 final. Yes on Sunday I mean.

How: (long) I visited my uncle on a way-too-hot Sat night. He was watching tennis. Honestly i didn't care much about the match. I never got any interested in tennis at that time. I did watched a lil bit, and indeed that match charmed a non-tennis-junky like me. Amazing tennis.

Why: (this is gonna be longer!) you can never believe this, but what I remembered the most 'bout that match was the moment when Yuri kissed Maria. I was like: "Dirty old man! How can you take advantage like that?!?" Sorry but I didn't know he was her pops until Sunday :p LOL my bad! Well the super tennis she performed the previous day combined with the misunderstanding kissy thingy was enough for a reason, ne? :p

Since tennis is not that popular here in the Philippines and Maria Mania didn't start until she actually won Wimby in '04, I only knew a handful of players and one of them was Serena Williams. The first tennis match I've ever watched was the Wimby final. It was kinda weird because in that match I was actually cheering for Serena and got disappointed when she lost. It was after she beat Serena in WTA Championships that I became a fan. I realized that someone has overshadowed the once mighty Serena and she didn't beat her just once but twice!!! Since then I've been following Maria's results up until now.
I think it was really destined that I will be a Maria fan because for 2 months we were not allowed to turn on the television because it was a mourning period for my father's death and when I actually turned on the TV it was the Wimby final that I saw.

Yes. That quarterfinal was a very impressive match for me too. Her attitude in battling through that tough match to a win was amazing, and made me a real fan. I first really registered her at Wimbledon 2003 when she beat Bovina and then Dokic. Before that I just thought she was an irritating ball-basher, who won by intimidating her opponents, but her qualities soon showed through.

I became her fan at the YEC'04
At the beggining I didn't like her.... I was a Elena fan before (I'm still a huge Lena fan, she and Maria are my main faves) as you can see, Lena fans, don't ask me why, but most of them don't like her and I kinda of went on that "hate wave"...
so, I was watching Maria vs Miskina (semifinal)
I was trying to cheer for Myskina, 'cause she's Lena old friend, but god, I don't know why, but I just don't like Myskina at all
even when I try to cheer for her for Lena
so, in a certain time of the match I saw myself cheering for Maria like crazy

I think that's because of her atitude
I just always tend to like player that fight hard for each point (Hewitt, Nadal....)
anyway, I'm a huge fan now :D
