Congrats, Justine! Now enjoy this title, rest a little and go take Wimbledon! Myskina, congrats on a good week, hopefully she'll have a good run in Wimbledon too and play this well for the rest of the season!

I wanted so much for Nastya to win but the main thing was to see her playing so well. She played even better that against Kuznetsova. It was great to see Nastya smiling too in the interview. I would much rather see Nastya go down fighting playing her best than see her losing playing the error prone lethargic tennis that she has shown during some of last year and early this year.

I think the choker in Juju returned if just for a little while, but she made it happen in the tiebreak.

Myskina really wants it, I do feel bad for her, but she had to play well to get it thus far anywayz.

I'm glad these 2 are in opposite sides of the draw at Wimby. For some reason Myskina gives JHH fits when she plays well. Any tennis expert can explain to me what shots trouble JHH from Myskina?

yeah, in the beginning of the year she would have lost this match. but she's so high on confidence now so she could hold her nerve and finish it!
but you really gotta give credit to anastasia, she played really great and saved 3 matchpoints at 4-5 0-40 and 1 matchpoint in the tiebreak before it was too much.
2 really great players! and they both should do really well at wimbledon next week!

What a match  This was really lot's of drama AND high quality. I don't think Nastya was crying in the end  I actually thought she took it very well as she knew though she lost the match she has made a larger victory: getting back to the 2004-form. I really felt sorry for her though, she deserved this win very much  But boy am I glad she isn't in Justine's half, she really is back and I'd say watch to anyone who's playing her early on.

Justine, you just had to spoil those three consecutive MP's and play with our hearts again  Glad you still made it trough.

And Justine chip & charging, serve & volleying, coming to the net so much is such a delight for the eyes :hearts: I really hope she'll keep on using that tactic throughout Wimbledon, it just might be the key to the title.

Rest up girls, and keep this form for the next two weeks :yeah:

For some reason Myskina gives JHH fits when she plays well. Any tennis expert can explain to me what shots trouble JHH from Myskina?
Myskina moves very well on grass. She hits pretty flat and early. That pressures Justine to hit early as well and Justine has some serious issues with hitting early on her backhand. You can tell that because Justine hits the tape a lot on her backhand with her errors. That mean she's pulling the trigger a little too fast. Myskina likes to put a little more on the forehand so that's the shot that Justine has trouble with. Myskina's forehand to Justine's backhand. If Myskina's backhand was on today than Justine's backhand would have issues with that as well.

up!

I've always been sceptical of Justine's topspin backhand on grass because you really need to shorten the backswing on grass. And Justine loves the extra time on clay and hardcourt she has to wind-up the topspin backhand.

During rallies, I hope Justine slices her backhand more on grass and keep the ball low. Graf made a killing at Wimbledon with her slice backhand.

Well, I am no expert but I'll echo the Belgian commentators - and it was rather obvious at times too.

Believe it or not - Nastya just went too fast for Henin at certain points, especially in the first set. Blast balls at lightning speed at Henin's forehand on grass and she will be late rather often. The fast, precise and deep balls from Myskina also prevented Henin from coming to the net, which put her mostly in a defensive position behind the baseline. Myskina really made the points (or lost them) for large parts of the match - especially in the first set.

I still can't believe she lost though :bigcry:

I demand a rematch in two weeks!

The thing is Graf always seemed to know the right time to whip out the backhand down the line. She would keep her opponents honest.
Justine doesn't. She just kept on slicing against Eleni in the first round last year especially in the third set. She played tight and her slice was tight. If you're going to play Graf's kind of style at Wimbledon, then you cannot play tight.

I think I got the gist now, thanks to all my tennis techies :)

So Myskina hits the ball so early which on grass is not good to JHH's backhand grip. Myskina's backhand was on today, JHH could hardly hit her backhand true. So what JHH had to do, and did in the 2nd set, was take the game to Myskina, come to net, play aggressive, don't allow Myskina to get the first aggressive move. Now I see why Myskina's game is good for grass.

JHH has to work that slice down the line some more.

Leo_DFP
Jun 24th, 2006, 02:55 PM
Myskina was always her best on grass. But too bad she had to lose this heart-breaker. I can't even count how many 3-setters she has lost to JHH.

Congratulations to Justine and Nastya for making this a really exciting final. It's almost a shame it had to end in a tie-break. In fact I think they should get rid of last set tie-breaks in finals.

I guess Justine can truly be considered a favourite for Wimbledon and it's nice to see Anastasia is coming back to her best form. Very entertaining match and hopefully we'll have some more like this for what remains of the grass court season.

Wow! Great match.

Nastya was outstanding in the first. Even when Justine had a 3-1 and 4-2 lead I had the feeling that Nastya was the better player. She really impressed me. The second set was a great set from Justine and a lapse of concentration from Nastya. The third was less quality imo but was obviously highly exciting.

Too bad for Nastya but she should play a good Wimbledon! And Justine, well, she's definitely one of the favs for Wimbledon although some others (especially Venus) could cause even more trouble to Justine than Nastya did today, so we'll have to wait how she handles this. I'm excited for Wimbledon though :bounce:

JHH has to work that slice down the line some more.
A down the line slice isn't a high percentage shot. First of all the player is likely hitting against the spin of the ball and secondly it's likely the player is changing the direction of the ball. Those are two no-nos especially when a slice these days is a defensive shot.

A high percentage defensive shot is a crosscourt shot with the opposite spin being put on the ball (chances are the ball is coming crosscourt).
Now if Justine was chipping and charging that would be an important shot to have in her arsenal.

Myskina played an absolutely superb match.
her tactics, anticipation, footwork and even serve were verrry good.
again, Justine played a couple of points better and i was glad she played some smart points when needed.

let me tell you there is (of course) definetly a way to beat Justine and Anastasia knows how to do it, and will do it if she plays as good as she did today and Justine doesn't serve better.

Great match, great final, great tournament for both players who seem very fond of eachother. Just great stuff :yeah:

Justine is salivating over that career slam, and has put in the work to get it done. VERY impressive! :yeah: Congrats, Justine! Well done! :) :bigclap: Still, Wimbledon will be the hardest slam for Justine to win, I think. She'll need some help with the draw: ( :secret: Can you say Venus upset early? :secret: ;) )

That said, I am SO impressed with Anastasia's improved mental attitude and focus. :yeah: After watching her take out Kuzzy yesterday, I knew Justine was going to have her hands full today. Well done, Anastasia! :bigclap:

Poor Myskina, another tight three set loss to JHH. Still, great to see her playing some high level tennis again and getting some good wins under her belt. Hopefully her great play will continue on the lawns of Wimbledon :)

Any reports on the match? How did Nastya play? Was she agressive?

Very for quite long runs in the first and last set. She beat Justine in most of the longer rallies then , The backhand had hit 10 winners to Justine's one as they went into the tiebreak so she managed to win against Justine's backhand and Sveta's forehamd in successive matches. Second set was a bit walkabout. Serve was OK.

Nothing in it. Justine hits fewer errors when it matters, she gets free points on her serve, She beat Nastya's game to get the first 3rd set rebreak but otherwise it was pretty even. She piles on aggression at the end but it doesn't always come off.. Nastya throws in more weak games when up a break. Nastya's speed and firepower actually won the games when she was in zone - the penetrating shots to the corners don't come back. The bh down the line was back. Two great lobs went in too - which hasn't beeen happening since 2004 - and she hit some nice volleys too.

TB was going to be difficult but Nastya had a good chance. She slipped going for one bh down the line and just missed the line and then hit an error as she was recovering. Take out the slip at the key point and the win was still on in the TB.

First time Nastya has been in zone that long in ages - she beat up the best player currently out there when she was - so she ought to be very encouraged.

I think during this match, Anastasia's best 'bits' were better than Justine's. Some of her strokes were AMAZING. Unfortunately she made a few errors too many and against Justine, you can't afford that.

I am so glad she has got back to her 2003/4 level. She is truely an all court player and I wish they will meet again in Wimbly.

Really happy that Justine came through on top though. When she lost her second mp (sliced into the net) my heart went all cold. It does show how a champion can just put bad moments behind sooooo quickly and just get on with the job. If she were me, she would have swore and shouted at herself till she lost............

Hope now you people can see why Myskina won a GS. It wasn't pure luck, she can beat anyone when she's playing her best.

She's just had a really shitty year and a half. I HOPE she is back tho!

If anything, I think this proves that Justine will beatable at Wimbledon. At RG she rolled right over Nastya, but was a bit lucky to get by here.

Congrats Justine :yeah:

Myskina  Better luck @ Wimbledon  Breaks my heart. :sobbing:

Nastya didn't turn up till the last 5 games of that match - might as well have been off having lunch. When she played well then she was doing to Justine what she did today - today she did it more often and hit harder - I suspect because the FO told her she could do it.

Justine had a bit of luck but Nastya also beat the only other player who is playing well too which tells you something about Nastya's current form.

Great match from both players! Myskina is so tough on grass; her movement, the ability to change direction of a shot, and the flatness of her strokes

Juju showed me today that, at this moment, she is most effective net player on the tour (among singles players). If she hadn't seved and vollyed so effectively, if she hadn't come in off those big approach shots, this match would have belonged to Anastasia...

Until Myskina has more consistent results everyone will continue to doubt she was worthy of that slam title. She deserved it because after two weeks she was the last player standing, but I still feel Myskina is a wild card.

I quite agree with you! It was a very nice match to watch, and while Henin proved the eventual winner, I was way more impressed with Myskina's game. She left her opponent miles from the ball in many occasions, her accuracy with the backhand is surgical, and kudos to her for the grace she showed in the post-match interview.

WOW - this match is the only reason i decided to post again. Myskina, just wow. It's a little sad that she didn't win, but she should keep her head up high with her play. She played very well, the best i have seen her in AGES. I hope she can keep this form up for the rest of the season, should end all that nonsense talk of retirement.

Justine, well she fought, and won, but was not much better than Myskina. And her screaming Allez at Myskina's mistakes in the tenth game of the third set after myskina saved those match points was atrocious - disgusting. But she played well, great form.

Great great Match!!

The crowd is full of old biddies, the atmosphere at all uk tournaments is bad anyway, but in a town like eastbourne, 85% are 40 or over.

Your play today was awesome and it is really good to see that you are getting back to the top of your game! By the time of that tie break in the third set, 40% of the old dears were asleep, another 40% had died in their sleep and the remaining 20% had gone for a cup of tea ;) .

I understand there was a contingent of Kim fans there and they normally make a terrific racket, but they obviously couldn't bring themselves to scream for Justine, because I couldn't hear them ;)

Great to see her win anywayz, has to be a big confidence boost going into Wimbledon! Although I hope this isn't gonna signal the return of the scary matches... I don't think our nerves can stand it!!

 Just proves my point, not only are you dumb, but deaf and blind (as the saying goes) But what else is new? ;) I understand that it must make you feel better to make these statements. Considering Kim is the darling of the WTA, I was pretty shocked at the amount of support Justine had!

I was there at Eastbourne this week and believe you me she is more popular than you know. Whenever the top 3 were out practising at the same time, it was Justine who had more people watching her, more press. At the matches, people were shouting out her name. People were highly complementary of her game and one thing I did notice was that when Kim's matches finished, people clapped .... when Justine finished her games, people clapped (the one's that hadn't died :D ) and gave her standing ovations.

You know fifi ... it's not good for your health all this bitterness. Mind you, I suppose it's better if you let it out rather than keep it in ... on the other hand ..

Oh did you know that Bryan is now Kim's coach  Yup, he was there telling her at practise which shots to practise on etc, etc. Seems like it did her a lot of good eh?
