Serena retires. She says she does not want to fly solo without Serena!!!!! If serena does not make a succesful come back in two weeks, my guess is that she might decide to hang up her racket!! Maybe Vee knows something and is trying to prepare us ahead of time. Noooooooooooooo!!! I don't want them retired at the same time, but I somehow always thought that it would happen!! Hope Venus can defend her title at Wimbly....might be her last!!! :bigcry: Your thoughts??? Article at tennisnews. Short, but to the point.

Even if she said that, it would have been blown out of proportion.

Stupid article, stupid thread.

I hope thats not true, i thought Venus wanted a long career, I would have expected Serena to retire first but I hope Venus will keep on going at least for another few years

Don't say things like this. When they retire they retire. They won't anytime soon. If they were going to, do you think serena would still be entering all these tournies? NO!

People say things but things change. My guess is that Venus will still be around for another 3 or 4 years. On the other hand I don't think we are going to see much more of Serena on a tennis court.

How is that even possible, they rarely go to each other's matches unless they are both in the tourny. Even when they go the same tourny, when one loses the other takes the next plane out. Serena was not in paris this year, she is not in london now and the list is endless.

She's always said that, but it's not gonna happen in the next few years...Just relax and stay calm  ...and btw, the thread title is misleading :(

If they retire, we can thank the both of them for over a decade worth of world-class tennis, as they changed the landscape of women's tennis.

Imagine the blow to the tennis world if this happens, losing both Williams Sisters at once will be a huge disspointment, but as long as they are happy then that's all that matters.

So why hasnt there been a big article on espn or bbc about it!?

Ok, maybe the thread wasnt stupid, but I think its a bit obvious that this so called "article" hastn excatly sat down and had a 30 min interview with Venus, more like a 20 second one.

There have been news items that retirement is impending since 1998. I've learned just to enjoy the tennis while it's there. :)

Well Serena is young and she has a lot of years of tennis, i don't think Serena surrender if she don't have an instant succesful come back, she knows that she needs time and hard work if she wants to be at her best again, and i'm sure she will try

The story also ran in today's Independent newspaper. Didn't Venus and Serena's father say several years ago he wouldn't imagine seeing them playing tennis past their mid-twenties?

Venus to make last appearance at Wimbledon if Serena retires

By Paul Newman

Published: 24 June 2006

As the defending champion going into her 10th Wimbledon, Venus Williams will hardly need an extra incentive when the 2006 Championships start on Monday. However, the fact that this might be her last appearance could make the next fortnight more special than ever.

Williams arrived in London on Wednesday without her sister, Serena, who is missing Wimbledon for the first time since 1999. Serena has not played since her third-round defeat at the Australian Open in January, when she was clearly out of condition. She cited a knee injury when withdrawing from Wimbledon and, although she has been back at Nick Bollettieri's Florida academyrecently, there has been increasing speculation that she will never play again.

Venus revealed at Wimbledon yesterday: "I'm going to retire when Serena retires. I don't want to ride solo without her." She said the sisters had not discussed retirement - "We don't have a pact" - but said she believed Serena "will probably feel that way, too". Venus added: "Not having her on tour is so sad. It's OK when she's out injured, but if I know she's retired then I would be really sad."

When asked what she likes to do away from Wimbledon, Venus underlined how much she will miss her sister. "I usually sneak into London. Serena is always going there so I'll hitch a ride with her. Normally I do a lot more when Serena's here. Now I probably won't do anything. Read a book....." Venus herself has played only three tournaments since January, but reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open has encouraged her as she seeks to repeat her remarkable performance last year, when she beat Lindsay Davenport in the final to become the lowest seed (No 14) ever to win the Wimbledon title. "I'm feeling really positive," she said. "I can't wait for the tournament to start." Had she watched a video of her third Wimbledon triumph? "I think I watched it the next day. I watched it again later that summer. There was a tape at Serena's place.

"There was one point in the third set - I think I was 2-4 and 15-40 down - where I hadn't actually realised during the match that I was down that far. When I saw the tape I thought: 'Oh my God, whooah!' And at the end I had to turn off the celebration. I thought: 'That was too much, Venus.' I was very embarrassed. I was so silly."

As a present to herself after last year's victory Venus bought two guitars, an electric Gibson ES - on which she has been playing songs by the Beatles, Bob Marley and the Police - and an acoustic Martin. It was her 26th birthday last week, but she did not celebrate in style. "I just lay on the couch, watched TV, took a nap and went to the mall," she said.

Venus has said a variety of thing in regards to retiring. If the statement is true you should take it with a grain of salt. Both her and Serena said they would play into their 30's before. Who knows? They could both play for a few more years and call it quits or they could play for another 8 years. You just don't know from their comments.

I would be suprised if that she would stay true to her word. If Serena retired right now as of today you can bet your last dollar Venus is not pulling out of Wimbledon.

I think what she is saying is that she doesn't want to be like many other 'lonely' players who spend their time on their own in hotel rooms year in year out. More evidence that the sisters love normality? Just a hunch...

that would be very sad... I know its blown out of proportion but as it looks now withing the next two to three years the following could retire: Serena, Venus, Kim, Lindsay, Mary, Anastasia... that would leave Amelie, Justine, Maria and a bunch of other Russians and teen prodigies as the new tennis generation....

Don't forget Michaella Krajicek - for being around in a few years and hopefully top 10 at least!

But why do you think Anastasia might retire - I haven't heard anything or heard her say?  I hope she doesn't.

Them chicks aren't leaving tennis anytime soon. They would never give their critics that kind of satisfaction. They'll both be around for at least another 5 years. People didn't expect them to be around this long and they're still here.

Serena isn't going to retire any soon i don't think. She seems to be working hard and trying to get back into the good shape. Though i do think that theses are their latter days (in a non-dramatic tone). I mean that this comeback, sinifies the start of their return to the top of the game. I can see Venus can Serena winning slams in the near future. If only Kim could get her head together, by the end of this year, we could hav the most competive periods of womens tennis in a long time. Justine, Kim, Amelie, Myskina, the Williams, Kuznetsova, Petrova even... in theory we should have a good period of tennis ahead. :drools:

But enough waffle... Venus will be around for a little longer i feel... because even if the article or statement is true, Serena isn't giving up just yet.

Serena is competitve. I think she would want to retire after she has made her comaback to the top. So I expect her to retire maybe in two years. retire while you're on the top would be sweeter for her and her sister, than retire coz of injuries (no dramas and boring)

Vee said she wanted to finish her career after the 2012 olympics at Wimbledon i heard, it may be just a rumour but it would be a nice way foor her to go, she said she wanted to play until she was 32 in 1 interview i remember anyway

vee needs to make friends on tour, sounds like she's lonely. dont think serena would be so lonely w/out venus. just more proof that not just tennis fans need serena, looks like venus needs her too. serena seems a lot more social while venus builds walls around herself and the other players. looks like being too herself all these years has caught up to her. serena on the other hand doesnt have those issues, thank god.

What makes you think Serena has more friends on tour than Venus? I've never heard either of them refer to any other player as a friend. I've heard them say they like so and so, or have known them for a long time, but the word friend is rarely used by either to describe a another player. True that Serena is more social than Venus, but Venus is very pleasent and friendly herself. Serena is just as guarded about extending her hand in true friendship as Venus. They just have different ways of showing it. Serena doesn't have to like or know a person to carry on a conversation with them, while Venus just opens up better to people she knows or likes.

I assumed it was some tiny little elaborated internet article from some unknown site! :wavey:

I also remember reading somewhere that she wanted to play into her 30's. I think Venus and Serena may retire together, who knows. But im hoping that time is long away!
