Wimbledon, England
June 26 - July 9, 2006

Here's hoping Anna kicks ass at Wimbledon this year. :yeah: The list of seeds is out and due to a couple of withdrawals Anna is in there:

1 Amelie MAURESMO (FRA)
2 Kim CLIJSTERS (BEL)
3 Justine HENIN-HARDENNE (BEL)
4 Maria SHARAPOVA (RUS)
5 Nadia PETROVA (RUS)
6 Svetlana KUZNETSOVA (RUS)
7 Venus WILLIAMS (USA)
8 Elena DEMENTIEVA (RUS)
9 Patty SCHNYDER (SUI)
10 Anastasia MYSKINA (RUS)
11 Nicole VAIDISOVA (CZE)
12 Francesca SCHIAVONE (ITA)
13 Martina HINGIS (SUI)
14 Anna-Lena GROENEFELD (GER)
15 Dinara SAFINA (RUS)
16 Daniela HANTUCHOVA (SVK)
17 Flavia PENNETTA (ITA)
18 Maria KIRILENKO (RUS)
19 Ai SUGIYAMA (JPN)
20 Ana IVANOVIC (SCG)
21 Shahar PEER (ISR)
22 Katarina SREBOTNIK (SLO)
23 Nathalie DECHY (FRA)
24 Anabel MEDINA GARRIGUES (ESP)
25 Marion BARTOLI (FRA)
26 Elena LIKHOVTSEVA (RUS)
27 Jelena JANKOVIC (SCG)
28 Na LI (CHN)
29 Sofia ARVIDSSON (SWE)
30 Tatiana GOLOVIN (FRA)
31 Anna CHAKVETADZE (RUS)
32 Gisela DULKO (ARG)

Now who would we rather she doesn't play in the first round? Vera Zvonareva seems an obvious choice.

I think the best draw would be Antonella Serra Zanetti.

What realistic Rd can we see Anna getting to at Wimbledon?, if draw goes ok, maybe a 3rd?

3rd round is certainly possible.

3rd round is certainly possible.

Based on her seeding I think if she doesn't make the 3rd round she'd consider it a disappointment. Anna's grasscourt preparation hasn't exactly gone to plan but hopefully she can pull something out of the bag when it really matters. Wimbledon is now the only Grand Slam where she's not got beyond the 1st round.

Zi Yan beat Anna in straight sets in Sydney this year. I'm hoping Anna will step it up as required here, despite her grass court tune-ups being disappointing. I think this could be quite a battle. And it would be cool in a way if Anna could get a 2nd round matchup against Lena V. :)

Justine returned very well and made a lot of winners off Anna's first serve, hence the 1st serve percentage is less than 50%. I think Anna could work on her second serve a bit but overall I don't think her stats are too bad when you consider Justine is playing near faultless tennis right now.

Sadly Anna's Wimbledon is over with two first round losses in doubles.

Ladies Doubles - 1st Round
Rodionova/Vanc def. Chakvetadze/Vesnina 6-3 6-4

This is very disappointing result considering Anya and Lena's heroics at Roland Garros where they made the quarter finals.

Mixed Doubles - 1st Round
Haggard/Daniilidou def. Levinsky/Chakvetadze 6-4 7-6(11-9)

Close but not quite. Anna hasn't been beyond the first round in Mixed this year. Perhaps she is yet to forge the right partnership. She was a bit unlucky at Roland Garros having her partner retire of course. Maybe she'll have a better time at the US Open.

Anna made 3rd round as expected. Now farewell to the grass, let's hope for more luck next year. During her young career did well on grass but every season there's more in it. Don't forget in 2003 made it to the Wimbly Juniors final. Then in 2004 closest of running out cause Surbiton points didn't count for Wimbly. For goodness sake Surbiton is played on grass. And the last minute WC Patty received. Really hope for a few changes on grass. Patty shouldn't be top 8 seeded. Had her chances rather have the 300 th ranked playing Wimbly Qual than Patty/Castano and a few other claycourters out of Wimbly. I think on grass you'd see the back of the higher you're ranked the better. Quality wise I think having the 300 th ranked brings a higher amount of quality than going by rankings. I think this would help the British too and at least they sell tickets in their native country.

Third round (Friday 30th June)
-----------

- ANNA CHAKVETADZE [30] lt. JUSTINE HENIN-HARDENNE [3], 2-6 3-6

The match started on Court 2 at 12:08 BST, and I saw it all on BBCi.

The commentators said Henin was playing the best tennis of anyone in the women's draw, and was favourite for the title.

Chris Bailey described Anna as a "bright prospect", but one that has "stagnated" at around 30 in the rankings. I disagree - when I saw Anna play at Birmingham and Eastbourne, I thought she was a much better player than when I saw her in 2005. She was a bit of a grinder back then, but now she has flairsome power.

But this was a desperately disappointing performance by Anna against an in-form and ruthless Henin. All those one-two punches and deceptive groundstroke-winners that had impressed me so much at Eastbourne were sadly lacking, as were those cute Bo Jangles jumps she was making after errors at Eastbourne! ;)

I say "desperately disappointing" not to be harsh, but because I actually think Anna might be the next player I induct into my Eternal Fanship, and I judge such candidates by very high standards. Anna has a lot of talent, but if this match is anything to go by, she still has a long way to go before she can really trouble the top five that she aspires to join within three years (as per her www.wtatour.com (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/players/playerprofiles/PlayerBio2.asp?PlayerID=310623) profile).

It's a shame that the BBC only televises Anna against opponents who thrash her for the loss of five games. She played wonderful competitive matches against Vera Zvonarëva at Birmingham and especially Eastbourne (I have not yet published my reports of those matches).

Elena Vesnina was in Anna's courtside support-group.

First Set:
CHAKVETADZE *___*___ 2
HENIN-HARDE _*@* *@* 6

Henin almost hit a forehand winner down the line - but it was just wide. Deuce #2. Service-winner. Ad Anna. She came to the net, forcing Henin to hit a backhand pass wide.

A very important hold for Anna - could be the difference between an embarrassing scoreline and causing some genuine worries for Henin later on.

A good return forced Henin into error. 30/15. Anna ran down a dropshot, hit a forehand would-be winner just long. 40/15 (2 SPs). Anna forehand return just wide. Second Set:
CHAKVETADZE __* *__@_ 3
HENIN-HARDE @* * *@ @ 6

Anna serving 0-0: Two service-winners. 30/0. Henin off-backhand return-winner on the sideline. 30/15. Anna forehand wide - lost focus. 30/30. Henin forehand winner down the line. 30/40 (BP). Double fault.

Henin serving 0-1: Henin looked to be cruising to a straightforward hold, but two double faults and a backhand wide made it 40/40. Anna netted two forehands to let her off the hook. Anna looked upset - "panic setting in" [Annabel Croft].

Anna serving 0-2: Henin hit a stunning backhand return-winner. 0/15. Three service-winners. 40/15. Anna forehand pass-winner. A very important hold, as Anna had lost five games in a row, and I was fearing 2-6 0-6.

Annabel Croft tipped Anna for the top 20. "She hits the ball really well, good timing, compact physique, good first serve (but weak second serve), good angles, good dropshot."

Henin serving 2-1: held to love.

Anna serving 1-3: Double fault. 0/15. Anna hit a lovely crosscourt backhand and crosscourt forehand winner onto the sideline. 15/15. Henin chipped and charged, and Anna hit a backhand pass wide and long. 15/30. Service-winner. 30/30. Anna netted a backhand. "Running out of ideas, feeling rushed" [Annabel Croft]. 30/40 (BP). Ad Anna. She netted a forehand off a deep, penetrating return. Deuce #3. Anna hit a short-angled error-forcing crosscourt forehand. Ad Anna. Service-winner down the middle.

Henin serving 3-2: Anna came in and hit an error-forcing off-forehand - "trying to keep the ball deep, trying to move Henin around" [Annabel Croft]. 0/15. Henin forehand winner. 15/15. Henin forehand long. 15/30. Anna complained about a second serve on the service-line after missing a forehand return. 30/30. Henin forehand volley-winner. 40/30. Service-winner.

Anna looked more and more upset and frustrated with every point. Annabel Croft said, "She expects herself to be doing so much better against Henin-Hardenne."

Henin serving for the match at 5-2: Henin forehand smash-winner. 15/0. Double fault. 15/15. Henin backhand just long. 15/30. Henin forehand wide. 15/40 (2 BPs). Henin forehand long. Anna breaks back!

Anna serving to stay in the match at 3-5: Serve out wide + forehand winner down the line. 15/0. Anna hit an inadequate dropshot, giving Henin a crosscourt forehand winner. 15/15. Henin backhand netcord-winner, and Anna actually smiled! 15/30. Anna played a penetrating rally, but netted a forehand and screamed in frustration. 15/40 (2 MPs). Henin finished with a backhand drop-volley winner after a good rally. Henin won 6-2 6-3 at 13:14 (1h06m).
