Sharapova not only has opponents lickedJuly 2006
Young tennis star is keen collector

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has revealed that when sheís not whacking the opposition all over the tennis court she enjoys nothing more than indulging in her favourite hobby Ė stamp collecting.

The former Wimbledon champion, 19, claims to have a huge collection and has been collecting since she was a child.

ďIíve collected stamps since I was nine or ten years old, and Iíve so many, millions. Iíve stamps passed down from my momís grandmother. Theyíre that old theyíre almost rusty!Ē, she said following a victory at the DFS Classic at Edgbaston Priory Club.

"The coolest thing is finding an excuse to go to the post office and do something different. It's exciting, something different. Not too many people do it. It's a cool collection I have.

"I know the whole process of how to remove stamps and dry them, but now I get catalogues from around the world and I get my mum to order them.

"I look at them and enjoy them. It's a nice distraction away from tennis."

Sharapova won the Ladiesí Wimbledon Singles title in 2004 and is among the top seeds for this yearís tournament which begins on 26 June

Kind of interesting. I don't feature many young, hip, gorgeous people being stamp collectors. She's got the money to indulge her passion.

I kind of think it's more interesting that the same old... fashion designer/actress/singer kind of thing. She must be more dreamy than I've thought.

"Dreamy"? This is a hobby for dorky kids and middle-aged guys who live in the
parents' basements as far as I am concerned. It's a real penny-ante hobby and there's just no way to glamourize it. Most people I knew gave it up when they got to high school

Do kids even do shit like this as a "hobby" anymore??? Back in the '40s and '50's yeah... but today? This is beyond lame. Just picture it if you will. Big ole 6 foot 11 "Masha", sitting in the floor somewhere, doing maintenance on her multi-million stamp collection. One word. WEAK.

Stamp and coin collecting are the two most popular hobbies in the world. There are VOLUMES written by serious collectors yearly. To me stamp collecting suggests a sensitivity and appreciation for history, culture and geography.

Defensive much?

I don't think it's glamorous at all, and wasn't trying to make it sound glamorous. I like the fact that it's not glamorous. The "dreamy" part was from how Maria said she liked to look at the stamps. That's sort of "dreamy" in the sense of she looks at the stamps and dreams.... meaning imagines. She thinks about the stamps and enjoys the designs of the stamps. That's the dreamy part. I'm not saying she's dreamy in the sense that she is glamorous. It's not McDreamy... more like daydreamy.

I love nerds and dorks... they really rule the world so much more than the "glamorous" people. :) :) :)
