Oh well. I hope this win or lost jumpstarts these players back to the top. It must be a difficult thing for Dokic to deal with right now. She use to be number four in the world and now she can't even qualify for this slam. She needs to bring something more to the table. She should be able to find someone to play doubles with her.

Erika_Angel
Jun 20th, 2006, 04:10 PM
End has come? ... She just needs to go back to ITFs to try and get some more matches under her belt. She came here on a limb, got a WC, it didn't pay off, oh well. It isn't like she will just quit now. She knows she is getting better, and she knows she could've won today's match.

Just needs to play more tennis at a lower level, get that ranking up and gradually play better players until she is ready. She isn't Hingis, she can't get to the top again that quickly.

Yet another second set tiebreak lost/third set meltdown for Jelena this year.

To be fair Jelena did fight in the third set today, there were about 4 or 5 long duece games and Jelena won those 2 games rather comfortably. She just wasn't strong enough, whether it was mental, or just her physical condition (we know she isn't as fit as she once was), it is something her coach will know that she needs to work on.

I'm confident she'll be back to ITFs soon and getting some more wins :)

Who knows what level Alex is playing at the moment. She apparently has been training hard since Feb with Nick B and on grass too so perhaps Jelena couldv'e been playing well but Dokic just better?

All I know is she played a 25K last week and won 4 matches, and lost to the eventual winner in a closer score than any other of that girl's matches. She obviously is improving, but just needs to gain some confidence, and some wins. Work her way up slowly.

well if the reports are true than Stevenson has been training all year long on grass in prep for this! There are plenty of players Jelena could beat and Alex included :o but today was not a good day. I think Dokic could beat a lot of those players in qualies: Vento-Kabchi for example :tape:

She isn't Hingis, she can't get to the top again that quickly.

why not? Jelena has enough power to be in the top 10 easily, she just needs to control her shots.
with Hingis, she was out for 3 years and she has to think her way through every match to overcome the power deficit. it doesn't make any sense that she should be able to come back SO much more easily than jelena, who is younger and more powerful.

jelena needs to put the work in... bottom line.

i really don't know how much "playing down at a lower level" will do when she just lost to stevenson. we'll see, i hope she can get it done.

WTA should a point a doctor, and forbid all players with serious mental problem to get on court. I mean 5-2...to Stevenson. Alex is a joke, and now Jelena seems a bigger one, sad but true. She takes a huge responsability for some of her decisions, and she is paying them costly. It's not just her family or coach, it's problem in her and she can't deal with it. She should close her tennis chapter, and start a nice life, far away from tennis...I don't think she enjoys it anymore...

Stevenson's first win since defeating a pregnant Lindsay Lee-Waters in San Diego last year. You shouldn’t really count that one. Lindsay was 8 months preggers at the time. That’s how Alex managed to break her 58 match losing streak, by stipulating that opponents must be either a/ pregnant (min. 6 months), b/ partially sighted, c/ only one leg or d/ Jelena Dokic.

I think a lot of you are forgetting that Alex has been training on grass for the last THREE months, rehabbing her shoulder, and getting into top shape at Bolletieri's. This was her last tournament she can use with her special rank. A first round loss and she'd be back to 10K...qualifying. She wanted to give herself every possible chance to do well here and it paid off. Good for her.

It's sad for Jelena, but she played better last week and she'll only keep getting better with more ITF play. I think she'll win a challenger by the end of the year.

Stevenson and Dokic should have BOTH received wildcards instead of these lame British girls who are about as useful as an empty ketchup bottle.

adee-gee posted this at www.menstennisforums.com (http://www.menstennisforums.com):

First match I went to was Dokic v Stevenson (anyone that suggests this is WTA and shouldn't be on here can piss off http://67.19.129.138/mtf/images/smilies/wink.gif ). Dokic started really well, and was dominating the match. She was looking sound off both wings and striking the ball really well. It was windy and both were struggling with their serve slightly, but it looked like Dokic had it won. At a set and 5-4 up, serving for the match, she served 3 double faults in 4 points and got broken. The set went to a tie break, and Dokic took a 5-4 lead with 2 serves to come. She double faulted on both her service points, then Stevenson took the set point and Dokic tanked the 3rd set pretty badly

It just sucks that Jelena was the one dominating and she basically gave the match to Alexandra. The upside, if there is one, is that perhaps her game has substantially returned. Also do you know whats up with her outfit? Adidas top, Fila skirt and Nike shoes? Jelena's become a bag lady ;) :P.

"I feel like it's working well, I don't think I was at this level a couple of months ago," Dokic said.

"We said we would try it ... I think he wants to work and I'm willing to work with him and I think he can help me.

"He's been through a lot obviously with Iva and I think he knows what I need and how tough it is to come back and I need someone in a situation like this who can lift me up again."

Like Dokic, Iva Majoli reached a career-high ranking of No.4.

She beat Hingis in the 1997 French Open final but, after a quarterfinals appearance at Roland Garros in 1998, she Majoli failed to reach the third round of another Grand Slam event and retired in 2004.

Following her well-documented family problems, particularly with outspoken father Damir, Dokic's career and ranking plummeted.

After realigning with Australia, Dokic received a wildcard to this year's Australian Open but exited in the first round.

"I went all the way up, now I'm all the way down," said Dokic, who also received a wildcard to Wimbledon qualifying.

"I feel like I have a long way to go, but I would like to try to come back still, and I think I just need to play some smaller events and mentally to get back on track.

"It's very difficult when you've been so far up to come down and play well again. It took me hundreds of matches to get there, so I think it will not take one or two now to come back."

Dokic did not want to set a time frame or any specific goals for her return, but said she aimed to get her ranking between 100 and 200 so she could make qualifying for the 2007 Australian Open.

Having played only one competitive tournament since January, Dokic admitted allowing nerves from a lack of match practice to get to her against Stevenson and said she would focus on smaller ITF events in Europe to build her confidence over the rest of the season.

"If she had beaten me 6-1 6-1 it would have been a different story," Dokic said.

"But I feel like I could have won that match and I should have won that match and you never know what could have happened from there.

"Maybe I could have qualified, maybe not."

Thanks MilanDokic, looks like Jelena is looking at this very sensibly, great attitude ... If she is willing to stick with it and try to get back to the top, then I'll be there as a fan on the way! :)

Bad loss but it's not the end of the world. She just needs to keep playing and staying fit and healthy and she can do it.

Sounds like Jelena totally had this won...serving 5 DFs on totally crucial points is completely giving the match away. :banghead:

Big congrats to Alexandra though! :D
