Sugiyama is tricky on grass. I think that's a good win for Sveta.

She always has excuses. not a surprise.

Ai nearly took out Sharapova in the 2004 QF of Wimbly, so it's not surprising she could trouble Sveta on grass. Just wish she could've closed out the match!

Ah well, good luck and Wimbledon and let's have a strong hardcourt run, Ai! :yeah:

Congrats on the win, Sveta.

Svetlana Kuznetsova from Russia. I'm not bashing her, but if you look at her past post-match conferences and interviews she rarely gives her opponents much credit and always has excuses.

Doesn't mean I think she's a bad person...

maybe in your opinion....

I wouldn't bash others but there are better examples of excuses, etc.

Sveta's "in norm"....

Ai's flat strokes translate well to the grass. She's definitely not an easy first match on grass. Great job getting through Sveta :woohoo:

Good luck @ Wimby Ai!

Here are some quotes for those who think Sveta doesn't make excuses ;) :

"I know her the way she is. She has always been like this. And once I lost to her because she starts crying. I was 4-1 up in the third set. I was playing unbelievable. And suddenly Vera started crying. And she was talking to herself. So I stopped. So I lost in a tiebreaker."
-- Svetlana Kuznetsova on Vera Zvonareva.

"I don't think she won the match, it was me who lost it...At the end she was celebrating as if she just won a Grand Slam. It just shows how desperate she was for a win."
-- A touchy Svetlana Kuznetsova after losing to countrywoman Elena Dementieva at Moscow.

Sveta has her moments, but it works both ways

"Then in second set, Lindsay played very well. She served very good. I didn't serve that well during all the match. This was the main thing, I think, for me. Because, I mean, playing a player like Lindsay, I mean, she's good serve and plays very flat. And you have to use all chances you have"

"I think just I give all credit definitely for Justine today. I think she played very good game and she change her game more than like different than she played before. She played so much inside and she didn't give me much time."

I bet those are few and far between...the previous post had the more commonplace comments.

 Believe what you want. I posted two comments from this year, which are probably more accurate than comments from 2 years ago. People do mature, especially at Sveta's age.

I'm no fan of Kuznetsova, but she isn't entirely disrespectful. She did recognise Ai as a strong opponent on grass, since she had this to say:

She's not number one in the world, but she's still an opponent to respect.

Too bad Ai :( It was a good battle - except for the last two sets - but at least the score might give you confidence going into Wimbledon.

That was mildly complimentary but she accompanied it several times with the comment that she(Sveta) didn't have to do anything special...

In general I don't think she's very complimentary of her opponents is all.
