" Former world number one Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from this year's Wimbledon Championships because of a back injury.

The 29-year-old American, the runner-up to Venus Williams in last season's women's singles final, also missed the French Open earlier this month.

Davenport, who won the Wimbledon title in 1999, has been replaced in the draw by Germany's Sandra Kloesel.

Carlos Moya has also withdrawn from the men's draw with a shoulder injury.

Davenport, who was also a Wimbledon finalist in 2000, has been suffering with a lower back strain since losing to fellow American Williams last year in the longest-ever women's final, which Williams won 4-6 7-6 9-7.

Williams' sister, Serena, also withdrew from Wimbledon last month because of an ongoing knee problem.

Serena won the tournament in 2002 and 2003 but has suffered fitness problems over the last year.

Spaniard Moya, meanwhile, who is ranked 39th in the world, was beaten in the third round of the French Open by Nikolay Davydenko of Russia.

But the 29-year-old and has enjoyed most of his success away from grass courts."

Lindsay's withdrawal which, although totally not unexpected, has personally come as a momumental disappointment. Wimbledon will not be the same without her. Let's hope her back injury improves in time for the hard court swing in the US and that she enjoys the same success as she did there when she won the US Open series in such devastating style in 2004.
