to see at Wimbledon? I have selected some of the matchups from previous slams that allow for some revenge and possibly interesting tennis.

Possible r. 16
amelie v. nicole (last match, nicole demoralizes world #1 at home)
martina v. kim (last match, kim stops hingis RG hype)

Possible QF
maria v. venus (last match, venus restores order to house of williams)
kim v. davenport (last match, davie takes kim out of slam contention for the second time)

Possible SF
kim v. maria (last match, kim snatches yet another final appearance from maria making her slamless for 2005)
amelia v. justine (last match, amelie outplays justine before stomach finally defeats her)

I voted for momo v. nicole. momo will definitely want revenge, but can she do it vs. nicole on grass with her big serve and great groundstrokes?

I don't think they can play until QF? 1-4 plays 13-16 in fourth round.

anyway, if it were to happen, it couldn't happen until semis, right?

i'd be in for a repeat of 2000 SF/QF, with the same result of course.

Hingis/Venus would be a great matchup. I think it'd be a closer match than VWFan. Hingis has a tendency (in the past) to try and breakdown the Venus forehand...2000 Wimbledon was VERY close...and Venus was definitely in form then.

Mauresmo/Henin would be fun to see too.

I'm not sure how soon a Hingis/Venus match-up could happen, to be honest. Their one match on grass was pretty close (6-3 4-6 6-4). I know Venus would likely win, but I just love watching Hingis and Venus play. :hearts:

DAY-UM! Looks like with the recent pull outs, Martina will be seeded 13th and has to face Mauresmo, Clijsters, Justine, or Maria in the 4th :<

Is there any way she will move up to 12th seed?

Venus wants to out-think Hingis, but that's playing Hingis' game and admittedly Hingis is better at her own game.

Still, advantage Venus on grass even without her top form! Hingis has less chance to return Venus' serve and Venus will take Hingis' serve early and swat it away!

Hingis indeed missed a clear chance at 4-3 Venus serving and came up with some errors, but thatīs the way it goes, Venus was simply on a roll.

well I would like to see Martina take on Clijsters again for the 3rd straight time in the majors. It is exactly Kim's type that help drive her out 4 years ago. To really solidify this comeback Martina MUST beat a player like this in a grand slam this year.

In RG I felt Martina had a chance cuz Kim was winning but wasn't impressive. Had she not battled Peer the day before and got that cold that was going around, I felt Martina had a better chance against Kim.

Hingis wants revenge!

Not always.
But Venus has said herself that she prefers the power game because other players will be making some errors just like she would (quote Aopen 2001), and that Hingisīs game was a real threat because of the consistency.
And second Venus canīt out-think Martina, she over-powers Martina, mainly because their contrasting styles. Hingisīs canīt try overpower Venus, because in the end Venus will be on top, and Venusīs canīt expect to beat Martina playing consistent tennis only, its really a battle.

The matchups between these two are almost always exciting. What made Hingis effective against Venus on grass in 2000 was her ability to respond quickly and anticipate Venus' shots (she also returned second serves well). She was then able to place the ball where she wanted it...the Venus forehand. Venus' forehand left her for a while in the second set and Hingis was able to capitalize. It also helped that the grass gave a little more punch to Hingis' groundies. Venus had to muscle past Hingis in the third set. The same thing happened at the US Open semis that summer.

Both players are able to do a lot with short balls. Venus swats them away mid-court deep into her opponent's court as if they were groundies...then at net has started to use a more traditional punch volley. Hingis on the other hand uses more touch to spin the ball at a deeper angle from mid court, and does the same when she gets to net.

I love watching them play...and I think Wimbledon is exactly the sort of stage that makes their matches explosive. I'm VERY hopeful for a rematch. May the best player win.

SF

EDIT: Agreed LoveFifteen, Hingis definitely gives Venus trouble. I don't think her losses to Hingis should be chalked up to "beating herself."

Could it be that Martina knows how to give Venus trouble? :angel:absolutely she does. that is what i said earlier.

if Venus continued to play power tennis taking the ball early and playing aggressively throughout, then she would dominate Martina as easily as Serena, Kim, Davenport, etc. but noooooo. . .she gets suckered into tennis chess making these matches last longer than they should.

witness: 6-0 first set on clay. after that, Venus beat herself.

Serena, Kim and Davenport have not dominated Hingis. They all have very even head-to-heads.

Also, why does the 6-0 first set to Venus always get attributed to Venus' amazing play? Why can't I say that Martina lost it because she made a ton of errors?

Oh wait, I don't say that because I have something called class. :tape:

Martina played horrible tennis in the first set in Rome. Venus did not even do much of anything to win it. So Martina indeed beat herself on the first set.

I'd rather see Venus-JHH on a neutral surface like hard courts. No offence, but I think had they played on clay JHH would win and on grass Vee would win. On hard courts, I think both are great, so that's when the drama would begin.

I would love a Venus - Sharapova final. I think they are the best two grass courters on two (with Serena and Lindsay out of Wimbledon).
