Serena Williams says she's in pain ó watching Roland Garros on television caused the seven-time Grand Slam champion discomfort ó and she's prescribed an over-the-counter panacea to remedy her pain: a wild card into the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open the week of July 17.

The Tier III Cincinnati tournament will mark the 104th-ranked Williams' first tournament appearance since she succumbed to Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets in the third round of the Australian Open.

Williams is well aware her season-long series of withdrawals have created about as much confidence in her commitment to competing in Cincinnati as John McEnroe suddenly announcing he has sworn off arguing with chair umpires or Maria Sharapova resolving to give up grunting, but the former World No. 1 said, as of this moment, she cannot envision herself withdrawing from Cincinnati.

"I expect to be ready to go out and be able to play. I just can't see that right now that I would pull out," Williams told Dustin Dow of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Since she beat Lindsay Davenport to win the 2005 Australian Open, Serena has posted a 16-8 record over the past 16 months. She has attributed her absence to a "chronic knee injury" though questions concerning her commitment to the sport she dominated in sweeping five of the six Grand Slam tournaments she entered from 2002 to 2003 and her conditioning continue to surround her.

The 2002 Roland Garros champion said watching the clay-court major on television proved to be a painful procedure.

"It's been really hard not playing," Williams told The Cincinnati Enquirer. "Watching the French Open, it really hurt."

Asked why she chose Cincinnati as the site to make her return to tournament tennis, Williams said she wanted to commence her comeback at a smaller event where she can accumulate match play and assess the state of her game.

"I wanted to start off with a smaller tournament. And about a month ago, it became a serious thought to play there," Williams said.

Reportedly hitting the practice court in Florida in preparation for her return, Williams is working to shed the rust from her game as she strives to regain her form, but has no plans to comb her closet for the catsuit she wore during the 2002 U.S. Open.

"Iíll probably be wearing something fun and sexy as usual, but I canít say it will be the catsuit," Williams said.

Yes. When she was withdrawing from other tournaments, there was hardly any word from her.

Actually a lot, Mauresmo seems like afraid to be in that position, Sharapova won zero while she was number one. Others like Davenport say they do not care. Kim says she doesn't like the attention she gets from it and Serena loves it all.
