interesting work. In general there is great improvment in recent matches (not against Kutuzova) and her technique is much much better but this numbers will stay high for the rest of her matches...

For some players 277 DFs is the record of their whole career, like Martina who made very few mistakes on her second serve. ;)

what's the average number of DFs a year of a WTA player?

If Elena isn't careful, she's going to start getting a reputation for having a vulnerable second serve; it could become a liability.

I bet I've served 277 double faults in one practice session.

At Indian Wells, if you discount the final where she was hardly on court long enough to make a dboule fault, she averaged nearly 15 a match, ,ost of which were 2 setters.

Look at this stat:

DF Win Loss
0 2 0
1-5 5 6
6-10 5 3
11-20 12 1
Two matches where she didn't serve a DF and won both - one was a walkover, the other was a retirement.

When serving 1-5 DFs per match, she wins about half her matches.

When serving 6-10 DFs per match, she wins 63% of her matches.

When serving over 11 DFs per match, she has won 12 out of 13 matches, i.e 92%.

Conclusion: Dementieva should serve 50 DFs per match. She'll never lose!

A 3 set match has 50% more sets than a 2 setter, therefore an average of 50% more points played, therefore 50% greater opportunity for DFs. That more than likely explains this stat:
When serving over 11 DFs per match, she has won 12 out of 13 matches, i.e 92%.Your interpretation of that stat is wrong. Its the DFs per points ratio, thats relevant here, less so DFs per match simply because by the law of averages 3 setters will have proportionally more DFs in total, but not necessarily worse DFs to points ratio than shorter matches.

Yes, I agree with your statements. Most of those wins were probably three-setters. Lena typically has about 4-5 DF's a set. Perhaps a better way to break down the stats would be to convert it to DF/set to see if she wins more with a higher rate of DF's.

The 3 setter = more double faults hypothesis makes sense.

Or maybe when she's serving many double faults, she's going for her second serve aggressively, and ends up winning a higher percentage of points on her second serve. As opposed to pushing the second serve in lamely for her opponents to tee off on.

I think it's psychological too. When she's serving poorly, she's even more determined and focused to win.
