She's short. She kinda looks/plays like Rika Fujiwara.
Her coach is a former pro, Kyoko Nagatsuka.

GoPin, did you watch the match? What did you make of Erika? And the match?

Jun 21st, 2006, 06:05 AM
Yes, I watched it :) It was the match I waited for all day. Despite the score, the two were fairly evenly matched, Erika had a few problems controlling volleys, but had a nice baseline game and technically she is good :) She also was pretty nervous I think and in the second set she let 3-1 but Kostanic won the next 5 games. I think she has a bright future, she could be in the top 100 I think next year :) I enjoyed watching her as well, and I now really like her :)

Jun 21st, 2006, 06:12 AM
Oh great! Hopefully she can get into the top ten by the end of the year!!

Jun 21st, 2006, 04:25 PM
top 10 ? I would love that :) I think he could be in the top 50, maybe 40 if she keeps training. She could currently be a lot tougher. I think she will end the year in the top 120. Go Erika :)

Jul 18th, 2006, 05:57 PM
Erika has withdrawn from Kurume, I guess she is too tired, she is only 18 and it is a wise idea :)

I would have liked for her to win title#3 though and get her ranking up... oh well, I don't want Erika forcing herself to play with injury

Jul 18th, 2006, 09:23 PM
I love this girl. :hearts:

Good luck in whatever ITF she plays next. :worship:

Jul 18th, 2006, 09:33 PM

Time for some noicse again :) 25k Tokagachi:
1st Round: Erika TAKAO (JPN) defeated Chiaki OKADAUE (JPN) 62 76(7)
2nd Round: Erika TAKAO (JPN) defeated Eriko MIZUNO (JPN) 60 61

Doubles 1st Round: SEMA (JPN) / TAKAO (JPN) defeated HIROSE (JPN) / UMEDA (JPN) 64 61

Aug 4th, 2006, 08:13 PM
QF: Erika TAKAO (JPN) defeated Kumiko IIJIMA (JPN) 64 60

She has a winnable Semi but Morita and Hisamatsu lurk at the bottom half :scared:

Aug 4th, 2006, 08:15 PM
Out of curiosity, I decided to check Erika's H2H vs Ayumi:

Ayu leads 1-0, winning in Makinohara last year 57 64 63. Erika has improved much since 05, but so has Ayumi. I am scared for the final :scared: I hope Hisamatsu can then take Ayumi out because Erika recently defeating Shiho

martin white
Aug 4th, 2006, 10:43 PM
go erika! :bounce: gee she's playing some great tennis over the last month!,i hope shiho can take ayu aswell,i don't know who too support now  .but id like to see shiho take a title! :)

Aug 5th, 2006, 02:03 PM
I dont know how this girl is winning all these matches.... she must be almost identical to Fujiwara in game style because I just dont see how she is going to win matches againt the European girls who have a much heavier weight of shot then the Japanese players she's been beating.
I can imagine that Erika must have increadibly good movement to make up for the lack of weight of shot and reach. Whatever she's doing, its working very well.
Call me a skeptic, but I will wait untill she plays some European girls before I comment on If she's a gonne be a top 100 player or not... Rika Fujiwara for example, had to work very hard and be very 'on key' for the success in singles that she acheived... and even then, she was often out stretched and hit out by European top 100 players.
Erika Sounds like an interesting player none the less!

Aug 5th, 2006, 02:30 PM
My dear friend V.Melb :wavey: It is nice to see your opinion,it is welcome :). Erika's strength is technically she is very good, her volleys are quite poor though. I was present at her practice session with Kirilenko and Ivanovic at Rosmalen and her match vs Kostanic at Rosmalen. She doesn't hit the ball hard, but she plays like Rika Fujiwara. She makes the opponent run around often, doing lots of drop shots and lobs and slice and topsin. I do think she can be in the top 100, and a solid player for the Japanese Fed Cup team next year possibly when Shinobu retires. One weakness though was that she looked a bit nervous playing against Kostanic, but the nerves will go with experience I think. I do wish though, that she would compete abroad more though, because tournaments in America and Europe are a lot different from the Japanese Challengers I could imagine. Erika could be ranked in the top 100 or 110 by the end of the year personally, her progress has been good and she hasn't got that much attention. She has two coaches, a male coach and a former WTA pro, Kyoko Nagatsuka who played Fed Cup for Japan and had a career high of 28 in Singles and 31 in Doubles. I would be very happy for Erika to have a career like that and I am sure she would too. Erika has also already defeated a top 100 player - Aiko Nakamura at Gifu earlier in the year. I will also try and find a video of Erika to post :)

Aug 5th, 2006, 05:04 PM
I think Erika is going to be top 100 for sure...I never thought she was as good an athlete or as talented as Rika but she seems to have mroe consistent results...Hope she can keep goign!!!

Aug 6th, 2006, 12:52 PM
(4)Ayumi Morita (JPN) d. (1)Erika Takao (JPN) 63 46 76(6)

great win erika! :woohoo:  in your slam debut too!,who is in the photo with erika? is it ayumi morita?

Aug 24th, 2006, 09:32 AM
Its not Morita, I don't know who it is though...

Now beat Lepchenko Erika please :)!

Aug 24th, 2006, 03:41 PM
From Kaelin's report:

Erika Takao is so cute! She's very very small more than Hiraki, I guess. She reminds me of Coetzer: she's incredibly fast and returns balls very deeply. She is good both sides especially on her forehand( she did several winners with it). She also did a lot of impressive drop shots: even if Rossana could have some, Erika was passing her after. Her weakness are her lack of power and her serve. This one is very erratics: when I came, she did winners and aces, but in second set, she couldn't put a first serve in and did many DF. Fortunately, her serve came back to good in the third.

Aug 24th, 2006, 09:42 PM
Tough loss today -

lost to Lepchenko 60 46 62

martin white
Aug 24th, 2006, 10:25 PM
bad luck erika! im sure she has gained alot of experience, im sure we'll be seeing lots more of her in the future! :)

Aug 25th, 2006, 09:22 AM
I followed the match on live scoreboard. In set 2, she was up 5-2 and had a little choke. Then after the set it seemed Lepchenko took a really long injury time out which got rid of Erika's momentum

Aug 25th, 2006, 09:39 AM
Amazing pictures by x chu x thanks ;)
She gets cuter every time I see her :awww:  :smooch:

Sad about the loss but great pics all the same!! :)

Sep 10th, 2006, 11:06 AM
I am very excited to inform you that Erika is taking part in the Tier III Wismilak International in Bali. Erika got in on her own rank  and plays a qualifier in round one. The worst case scenario is Erika will play the top seed in qualifying, Klepac of Slovenia who is ranked about 100 places behind Erika so hopefully Erika can take care of this "qualifier"
If she wins, she plays 2004 US Open Champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova  of course Erika won't win, but it will be great experience for her all the same. Hopefully Erika can take part in the Asian Tour this fall where she can probably play in every event, even if it is qualifying so she can get that rank up. Go Erika! :yeah:

I saw Eriko play live for the first time last Thursday (12the October) in Bangkok against the Greek girl. I am very much impressed with Eriko and will avidly follow her career.
I would like to know a lot more about her.
I just realized that last Thursday wass Eriko's Birthday.
Happy birthday, Eriko!
Do you have a fan club?
Can I join it?

Oct 13th, 2006, 10:18 PM
hey :wavey: Welcome :D

I never knew it was Erika's birthday, happy birthday Erika :baby: I don't think she has a fan club, this is the best fan gathering here on the internet probably :) Nice to meet you Sainarong :)

Sugi, why don't you form the Erika Takao Fan Club?
I will join.

Oct 14th, 2006, 01:14 PM
I would like to tell you how I come to be fascinated by Erika.
Last week, I did not even kow that Erika exists.
Then, on Wednesday October 12th (Which was Erika's 19th birthday, by the way), I went to see the PTT Bangkok Open 2006.
My friend told me that the match on the center court seemed to be a huge mismatch between a tiny, chubby unknown Japanese and a statuesque Greek, Eleni Danilidou, who was once as high as number 14.
A nervous Erika was broken in the very first game. It appeared that my friend was going to be right, and that this was going to be a complete rout.
But Erika bravely clawed back intio the match and lost by only 4-6, 4-6. with more experience, Erika might have won.
I was taken in by this brave girl. Being short and chubby, Erika does not look like a high-ranking professional tennis player; as a matter of fact she looks rather like my 20-year-old daughter, Yui. Her physique is clearly a disadvantage in professional tennis, and yet, there she was, giving a top-class, experienced tennis player a difficult time.
Her determination is nothing short of amazing.
After, the match, I did some google search and found that Erika has just turned 19 on that very day. I also found out that, at Number 145, she is the fourth highest ranked Japanese in the WTA circuit.
Erika, no matter how far you will go in future, you are already a champion.
I will follow your carrer with great interest, and wish you the very best of luck in your endeavour.

Oct 17th, 2006, 04:27 PM
At the PTT Bangkok Open 2006, I also saw the eventual winner, Vania King, demolished the powerful, 39-ranked Lucie Safarova 6-1, 6-1 in a very impressive fashion.
Although this is a thread about Erika, I think the readers may be interested in King because I believe Erika may find it beneficial to study King's style.
But first, a little background about King. She is a 17-year-old, 5-foot-5", Chinese American. King is now number 54 in the WTA, and I believe that she will be in the top 30 next year.
Vania King aims for the lines, both the base line and the side lines. She does not hit the ball hard, but she often uses her opponent's power to blast the ball back. King is very consistent, and a fast mover. I think Erika would do well to emulate this strategy.
However, King is also a fairly good server, she often aims her serve at the side line. King is also a good volleyer and looks for opportunity to come to the net to finish off a good move. I do not think that Erika's movement and volleying is good enough yet for her to employ this tactic. Erika stays at the baseline which is probably the wisest thing to do at this stage.
BTW what is Erika's next tournament?

Thanks again Sainarong :) Your findings are always a blessing to us :D Aiko is currently in the 25k Makinohara Challenger as the second seed. Top seed is Taiwanese Yung-Jan Chan...

I notice that 30 of the players in the main draw are east Asians.
Please keep us informed of her progress.

Thank you, Sugi, for posting the results of Erika's matches at the 25k Makinohara Challenger tournament . :hearts:
The tournament website is very out-of-date. At this moment, Friday afternoon Japan time, the website only has the first-round results, and the quarter-finals have already started!!

Does anybody know the result of the $25,000 Makinohara 2006 which must have been completed yesterday (Sunday)?
It is so frustrating when you cannot get any news.
The $25,000 Makinohara 2006 website has the match results up to the quarter-final. After that, nothing. The person responsible for updating the website must have gone off on an unscheduled holiday or something. :fiery:

Oct 23rd, 2006, 04:57 AM
In the latest WTA ranking, as of 23rd October, Erika slipped don three places, and is now:
136 (last week 133), TAKAO ERIKA, 201.75 points, matches played 24 .

This presumably means that she did not make it past the semi-final of last week's tournament.

Better luck at this week's tournament where I think Erika is the # 1 seed (am I right?) :(

Oct 23rd, 2006, 05:12 AM

I got the following information from the website above:

Dates : 23 Oct to 29 Oct 2006
Venue : Hamanako, Japan
Surface : Carpet

Main Draw - Last Modified: 20 Oct 2006

Highest ranking entry : Erika Takao.

How updated the information is, I have no idea.

Let's hope this website will be updated more regularly than that of the last tournament. ;)

Oct 23rd, 2006, 02:29 PM
Erika in fact reached the finals but fell to Chia Jung Chuang

$25,000 Makinohara 2006

At last, they have put up the results.

Chia-Jung CHUANG (TPE) (5) defeated Seiko OKAMOTO (JPN) (6) 64 46 62
Erika TAKAO (JPN) (2) defeated Su-Wei HSIEH (TPE) (4) 64 63 :bounce:

Chia-Jung CHUANG (TPE) (5) defeated Erika TAKAO (JPN) (2) 60 64

Erika must have got very tired.
Hope she will win this week, but if she plays too much, she will get too tired and cannot produce her best form.

Oct 23rd, 2006, 08:13 PM
Erika really should have defeated Chuang... I expect she is really tired.

Erika will most probably be the #1 seed in the $25,000 Sumata tournament, the details of which are as follows:

Dates : 30 Oct to 05 Nov 2006
Venue : Sutama, Japan
Surface : Clay

Note that this tournament is on clay. Being a precision baseliner, the clay surface should suit Erika. But this is only a guess. Does anyone know Erika's record on clay?

Doesn't she ever get tired?

Including today's quarter-final, Erika will have played 8 matches in the past 12 days.

Result of the $25K Hamanako 2006

Erika TAKAO (JPN) (1) defeated Chia-Jung CHUANG (TPE) (5) 63 60 :worship: :bounce:

Last week in the Final of the $25K Makinohara 2006, Erika lost to the same Chuang as follows:

Chia-Jung CHUANG (TPE) (5) defeated Erika TAKAO (JPN) (2) 60 64

Tomorrow in the semi-final, Erika will face # 3 seed, HISAMATSU, Shiho (JPN).

Oct 27th, 2006, 02:36 PM
:woohoo: Great revenge!

Oct 29th, 2006, 10:03 PM
I do not know the result of the 25K Hamanako (does anyone knows?), but here is the latest women's ranking as of 30th October 2006:

TAKAO, ERIKA;this week 132; last week 136; total points 215.25; number of tournaments played 24

Erika has gained 10 points and moved up 4 positions.:D

She has consolidated her position as Japan's #4; the # 5 player being at # 162, 45 points below her. However, she has a very long way to catch up with Japan's #3, Akiko Morigami whi is # 85 and has 321 points.:o

Erika is also a long way from reaching the top 100; the current # 100 has 279.50 points, 65 points above her.

This week Erika should be the # 1 seed at the 25k Sumata which is being played on clay.

Oct 30th, 2006, 04:28 AM

Oct 30th, 2006, 07:13 AM
Erika really must be tired, if I were her I would give this year a rest and come back strong playing a WTA Event qualifying like Auckland before attempting to Qualify for the US Open :D

Oct 30th, 2006, 11:09 PM
Erika Takao lost to #3 seed, Shiho Hisamatsu, 5-7,6-3, 4-6. It must have been a close, very long match, probably lasting over 2 hours.
I notice that Erika lately tended to lose a 3-setter match against lower-ranked opponents. She was probably getting tired by the end.
Her opponent, Hisamatsu, is 27 years old, weighs 50 kgs, and has never been ranked higher than 160. If Erika was fully fit, she should have lost to such a player.

You are quite right, Sugi. Erika should take some time off, but the youngs never realize that they are tired. She needs an experienced person to plan her playing schedule.

From now on, Erika needs to practise playing against large, strong players whom she will meet more often as her ranking goes up and her opponents become more international. These larger players play a different game.
As I have written before, Erika should study the style of Vania King, a Chinese American who is only 5 foot five. I saw King play in Bangkok and I was very impressed.

I repeat, Vania King will become a well-known name in 2007, one of the rising star of tennis.

Oct 31st, 2006, 02:17 PM
Erika must have read your message, Sugi. She has withdrawn from the $25K Sumata tournament.
Please keep us informed on Erika's future schedule. :hearts:

Nov 2nd, 2006, 09:31 AM
Good decision, I wonder if she is not playing any more tournaments this year.

Nov 2nd, 2006, 10:32 AM
Erika also withdrew from Jakarta next week.

Nov 5th, 2006, 10:11 PM
Erika has also withdrwan from the Shenzhen tournament - see details below:

$50,000 Shenzhen 2006
Tournament Key : W-C50-CHN-05A-2006
Dates : 06 Nov to 12 Nov 2006
Venue : Shenzhen, China, P.R.
Surface : Hard

She is either resting, or injured, or practising for the 2007 season. I hope it is the latter.

Erika is still young and fresh. She needs to improve on some aspects of her tennis in order to reach the top 100 next year.
I think she can do it, but it won't be easy. This is a good time of the year to go back to "school".:hearts: :hearts:

Nov 6th, 2006, 04:38 AM
This is the women's ranking as of 30th October 2006:

TAKAO, ERIKA;this week 132; last week 136; total points 215.25; number of tournaments played 24.

And this is the ranking as of 6th November 2006:

TAKAO, ERIKA; this week 128; last week 132; total points 224.50; number of tournaments played 24.

How come Erika got 9.25 more points when she did not play any tournaments during the week?

Can it be that the points are added one week after the tournaments took place for the ITF tournaments? Does anyone know?

Anyway, the bare fact is that this is Erika's highest ranking ever.:bounce: :bounce: :worship: :worship: :bounce:

Nov 9th, 2006, 11:32 PM
Is Erika playing in the Doha 2006 Asian games due to start on 1st December?

Japan is, of course, participating in the Doha 2006, and Erika is the #4-ranked Japanese player in the WTA ranking.

Does anyone know?

There will be many good players from Japan, China, India and Thailand participating; so the competition is quite tough.

Nov 11th, 2006, 03:14 PM
I don't know, I don't think so I know Aiko and Akiko are competing but it would great experience for Erika :yeah:

Nov 13th, 2006, 09:57 AM
This is the women's ranking as of 6th November 2006:

TAKAO, ERIKA; this week 128; last week 132; total points 224.50; number of tournaments played 24.

This is the women's ranking as of 13th November 2006:

TAKAO, ERIKA; this week 130; last week 128; total points 219.75; number of tournaments played 23

Erika slipped down two places and lost 5 points as she did not play any matches last week and thereby failed to defend her 5 points.

BTW Erika has also withdrawn from the $75K Kaohsiung, TPE tournament this week; she would probably have been seeded 8th.

Nov 13th, 2006, 05:24 PM
I guess this is probably it for Erika this year. But what a year it's been! :hearts: :yeah:

Nov 13th, 2006, 06:15 PM
Now onto an interesting statement.
Japan is into the world group for Fed Cup, the team in 2006 consisted of Ai Sugiyama, Aiko Nakamura, Ako Morigami and Shino Asagoe. However, of late Shino Asagoe announced her retirement and as number 4, there is a chance Erika could get a spot. As great it would be, I have a feeling this may not happen and the last spot could be given to Ayumi Morita who is Japans best thing since sliced bread. Junri Namigata could also possibly challenge for the final spot. It will be interesting to see who gets it :D

R1 vs Woerle in Antwerp

see you tomorrow Erika :smooch:

Feb 9th, 2007, 04:25 PM
Presumably Erika will play on Second Court as opposed to Centre Court.

It is a 5 minute walk from court to court and it is supposed to snow tomorrow so the passage will be REALLY slippy. I love Second Court :hearts: It is so small and intimate in comparison to the cavernous Centre Court.

Feb 9th, 2007, 04:31 PM
The cavernous Sportpaleis Centre Court
Court 2

Erika would love Centre Court  They put a disco ball down and players enter the court to music which sounds like it is from an epic war movie

I was correct Court 2 in the evening :D I may dare to ask for a picture with Eri at the end of her match if she wins

Why on earth is Erika playing Antwerp, and not Bangalore?

Feb 9th, 2007, 07:56 PM
who cares, she has problems with the European girls and to play in Antwerp would get her good preparation and experience.

Also, she mentioned to me she enjoyed her time in Holland when she played Rosmalen last year, she even mentioned she like Belgium or something in my brief conversation with her, I didn't quite catch it... Anyway, I am sooo excited about seeing her :yippee:

Feb 10th, 2007, 07:17 PM
Erika def. Woerle 76(2?) 62

:yeah: I was there at Court two, just got through the door of my house a few minutes ago, it was the last match I saw today. Although Woerle is a steady top 200 player, I would say this is a very good win for Erika as Woerle is a typical European player. The match started poorly for Erika, Woerle entered the match with an obvious game plan and made advantage of Erika's small height, by hitting lots of high balls. Woerle led 3-0. Then Erika started playing AMAAAZING, coming to the net, drop shotting slicing and was really animated. Her male coach, (Kyoko wasn't there ) kept shouting out "Come on Takky!" Erika kept fighting and eventually it came to a tie break. There were loads of great rallies and wonderful winners from Erika. I was probably suffering from heart problems during this match, I had sweaty palms throughout and my knees were shaking like crazy. I played each point with Erika in my mind. Erika was really animated, fist pumping, shouting come on and obviously was really enjoying herself on court, she giggled, she went aaaah and broke into a laugh when she hit an error and lost a point. Throughout the match she kept smiling. The second set, Kathrin just gave up and exploded, allowing Takky to win 76 62 :D A really good win for Erika-Chan.
At the end of the match, the match was basically empty and I stood outside and waited for Erika. She signed my book with a heard and a smilie face and it is by far the nicest autograph I have :) I congratulated her and she thanked me in her really cute voice :awww: My friend then took a photo of us and her coach then spoke to him and Erika and told him to take one of the two of us together. Erika laughed and giggled :awww: and we had a photo together. I wished her luck and she left. She has improved so much since her loss to Kostanic in Rosmalen last year. In particular her net game and vollies has improved greatly. I was really proud today to be an Erika fan and it was obvious that I chose to support the right player. My parents and friends also were made Erika fans by the end of this match.

She plays Sprem next. Sprem is one of the most powerful players so Erika may struggle but Karolina does hit many errors as well. I am fully hoping she takes advantage of this :)

Feb 10th, 2007, 10:08 PM
I just realised, this is Erika's 2nd match in Europe, her first being in Holland. That means I have seen every match Erika has played in Europe

Shame it will end tomorrow when she plays Sprem :D

Feb 11th, 2007, 04:19 PM
ohh  Sprem won 76 61 :crying2: A good fight, Sprem is the hardest hitter on tour. I see light at the end of the tunnel for Erika

Feb 11th, 2007, 04:20 PM
I was thinking, perhaps we can have this thread renamed "Who's Erica Takao" doesn't really sound like a cheering thread, this wasn't even made as a cheering thread and her name is spelt wrong. I was thinking along the lines of

Erika "Takky" Takao Cheering Thread

Feb 11th, 2007, 11:28 PM
Yes Rename it, sugi!
Nice thread ! Now I know her coach's name : Kyoko Nagatsuka, hmm.

I was sitting next to him saturday and sunday during Erika's matches, but I clean forgot to introduce myself.
He was really disappointed she didn't capitalize on her 5-1 lead in the tiebreak, since she did lead all the way in the first set.
As he put it : " She should have won the first set, the second set it was all over." His throat was still hurting , just as on saturday, he was coughing the whole time.
I had a whale of a time , cheering Erika on.
He's such a polite guy, shaking my hand and thanking me after every match.

He's such a polite guy, shaking my hand and thanking me after every match.

ohhh I know who you are :) DId you occasionally scream out "Come on Takky?" She has two coaches, the male one I don't know the name of and the female one is Kyoko Nagatsuka who I don't think travels to Europe. You can read how excited I got cheering her on. I liked her coach as well, he smiled politely and was nice to me when I got Erika's autograph and photograph and waited patiently. He seems a nice guy, I must be brave enough to sit with him next time I watch Erika. It is great to have another fan, I hope you will be here often :D I think I know you are though, I was towards the other side of the stand with two friends. A shame not many people watched the match, but she played really well against Woerle I thought, didn't you?

Ahem I don't 'scream' , haha , I shout . and it was ' Come on Erika' , but yeah , next time , be brave, come sit with the coach. That's what I like about Court 2 . You get to sit next to players, coaches. Most like to be left alone , some won't be bothered if you ask 'em a few polite questions without imposing.

(Most female players make eye contact with their coaches all through the entire game and you don't want to interfere with that.)

That's how I found out he also trains Akiko Morigami and has trained Erika for the past 2 and a half years.

So Kyoko is her female coach, damn, now I still don't know his name :)

I love the pictures
but you cut yourself out, hmmm.. Aaah you're shy !!!

She played well against Woerle, coming back from 0-3 down to win the first set. And the second match even better, because she was in front all the way up until the tiebreak.

I'm not an Erika fan though , I just love to support what I estimate to be the underdog in each match .
