Brenda was on tour until 1999. And that serve on grass, as long as she stayed in shape, would always be a weapon now 7 years later. Bad loss for Laura, but not totally surprising.

Brenda is quite a bit younger than Navratilova.

Brenda lives in my town and ran (runs?) a tennis camp a few miles from here. I saw her playing a few years ago, and her serve was still amazing. No surprise she could use that to get some wins. If Navratilova had a serve like that, she would still be playing singles and probably be top 10.

K, I'm surprised at Granville's form this grass season. It's supposed to be her best surface and she's been far less than impressive so far. But it's nice that Brenda's coming back with a bit of success now.

And on another note, I'm really liking the Wimbledon wildcards. Not really getting the Abramovic one though? But other than that, love Jelena and Radwanska in there.

I'm a little confused about the Wimbledon situation too. They apparently promised her a qualifying wildcard when she started this comeback. Maybe they changed their mind after her results this year?

1. Ivana Abramovic (CRO)
2. Cara Black (ZIM)
3. Jelena Dokic (AUS)
4. Amanda Keen (GBR)

6. Katie O'Brien (GBR)
7. Melanie South (GBR)
8. Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)

Ivana Abramovic should not have got a wild card. No idea why she isn't on the qualifying list anyway. She is ranked 187. In all likelihood she didn't put her name in the qualifying entry list and then changed her mind. She has never gotten beyond the 2nd round of qualifying in three attempts before and I doubt it will be any different this year. Her wild card should have gone to Ursula Radwanska or Brenda.

ChrisCologne
Jun 18th, 2006, 04:10 PM
I believe her explosion must have to do something with her anger at the officials in Wimbledon. Maybe she regards herself as IN FORM and wants to demonstrate something. She cannot play qualies when doing good in Holland. Therefore she maybe plays doubles in Wimbledon later on.

Isnīt it that this dream of Wimbledon might lead her to trying again for more than a year then and relive the dream in 2007? I believe she kind of tried all this with a climax at Wimbledon 2006 and to end it again at the end of 2006. But maybe it turned out to be wiser and playing smaller events and get on a quali-level for 2007 and entering it on a solid basis of a ranking within the top250 then in 2007.

It's always nice to see these players coming back. From what I've heard of Brenda's game, it's nasty on grass. If she can win against Medina or Domachowska, her comeback is definetly necessary.

If she's playing here, I can't see how she could have played Wimby quallies. I expect Brenda to be in the doubles draw.

I actually saw this match today! It was brilliant to see Brenda play again, it had been a really long time!
Anyway, Brenda played classic grass tennis. She hit all the textbook shots, serve & volley, chip & charge. She seemed to have driven Granville completely crazy. Having said that, Granville played horrible for the latter part of the match.
Good luck to big Brenda in the next round!

So I saw some of the coverage. Brenda does have an excellent serve but the rest of her game ain't all that. She was basically slicing all her backhands and forehands which ofcourse is more effective on grass than any other surface. But still, Granville didn't handle them well at all. Didn't show any top 100 level at all.
Hopefully Brenda wins another match though.
