This generation of tennis hasn't really produced many longstanding rivalries, but there are a few. Which rivalry produced the most incredible tennis?

Serena v. Capriati (Serena leads 10-7, almost all were three-sets)
Venus v. Davenport (Linds leads 14-13, but Venus won all three of slam finals)
Davenport v. Hingis (Davenport leads 14-11, almost all were for the title)
Hingis v. Venus (Hingis leads, but Venus won seven of last 10)
Serena v. Maria (Tied at 2-2, but Maria won 2 of the last 3)
Justine v. Kim (Tied at 10-10, but Justine leads 3-0 in slam finals)

S. Williams/Capriati always had memorable matches (apart from that Wimbledon drubbing)

Of this generation? I'm not really sure who decides what the generations are, so I'm going to answer this question my way.

Martina Hingis vs. Venus Williams - These two have played in many terrific matchs: '99 US Open SF, '99 Munich SF, Wimbledon '00 QF, '00 US Open SF. Even if their matches aren't the best quality, there is always a lot of drama and heart involved.

Lindsay Davenport vs. Venus Williams - Terrific rivalry here. What amazes me about these two is that even when either of them aren't playing well, or are in a bit of a slump, they are pretty close. '98 Australian Open QF, '04 Stanford F and '04 US Open R16 are examples of this.

Capriati vs. Serena was usually dramatic, so that would get my vote.

Yes, but it wasn't incredible tennis from both players - which is what the question was asking, I think. It really was the one blowout in their rivalry, too. All their other matches featured high quality stuff from both players.

You Should have added Davenport vs Sharapova rivalry :)

You Should have added Davenport vs Sharapova rivalry :)unfortunately, other than the 6-0, 6-0 match, Maria has won all the rest. linds does not do well against gritty fighters. it's Maria 4-1 for now, but perhaps linds can turn it around.

Well, Williams vs Williams has produced the most amazing points, but the overall matches weren't great. The '05 WImbledon final was an all-time great match, but Serena vs Capriati was far and away the best series. Almost every match had a set in which a player needed seven games to win a set, and many were three setters. And they were two players who were so ultra-competitive, but there wasn't anything personal in it. You could just enjoy two players trying to put a massive beatdown on each other.

Venus vs Davenport and Serena vs Capriati are classics. Venus and Davenport has met in 3 grand slam finals and Serena vs Capriati matches are always Semifinals with high quality tennis.

Nothing got me wore excited than a Jen-Serena battle, they were simply the best!! In terms of high quality tennis, I'm not sure I would put them first though. Then again I'd take an exciting match over a high quality bore.

I voted for Hingis/Venus but I would reconsider and put Serena/Jen and Serena/Masha tops on the list- that's were the real fun is at!

Jennifer and Serena. It was never really a good quality match. Almost every match was 30+ errors from both sides, but it was still unbelievable to watch. Neither of them ever wanted to lose that the fight was amazing. I loved towards the last few matches how they really became nice to each other. It was almost growing respect each time. I remember at the Nasdaq before one of their finals on Serenas MTV diary when she was saying Jennifer doesnt really ever say much, but they started to actually hug after matches in the '04 season.

Jen and Serena now though,.

Yes, well, it's a bit unfair to compare anything to that rivalry really. It's unlikely anything like that will happen again.

From the ones we've had lately, I'll pick Serena - Jennifer.

Hingis and Venus for sure. They contrast each other really well in terms of style of play; and they are both exceptionally good with their styles. I predict at least 3 more meetings this season, mostly SF.

clearly it's between hingis v. venus & serena v. jenn

however am i the only one that just loves hingis v. serena matches?

except for their last match in miami which hingis put up a really nonchalant effort, most of their matches were very tense. the australian open '01 is my favorite match of all time! their us open final was dramatic, and the very first time they played hingis saved match points...

i really hope serena come back healthy, i'd love to see her and hingis battle it out

well kim and justine got one vote.

they are even at 10-10 and 1-1 on grass and have a potential matchup next week.

the funny thing about their rivalry is that unlike some where one dominates then the other. their rivalry goes back and forth with neither having more than three match wins in a row. justine won almost all the matchups on clay 5-1 and kim edges on hard 6-4, though lost 2 of the four in slam finals.

it will be interesting to see who will move ahead on grass, if they meet in the SF!

Venus and Hingis, just always have great sparks, love those long rallies between them they always seem to bring something extra out in each other, they're back to back semi-finals confrontations at the U.S. Open will stand the test of time, with a heartbreaking loss in the first one for Venus. Then redemption the next year, with the help of a classic backhand pass in the 3rd set by Venus that even Hingis couldn't believe, the contrasting styles of play, will to win make this a consistently compelling match-up.

Obviously, I love the rivalry between Hingis and Venus. It's a delight, and I hope both girls can play many more matches together.

My favorite match of all time was the QF between Hingis and Serena. I hope Serena comes back and has many more great matches with Marti.

JCap and Serena is also a great rivalry.

And Maria v Serena ... damn, that AO semifinal was just

I will say Serena v Capriati. I just voted on the poll and that's second on the results.

They played some amazing matches between 2001 and 2004 in the slams and in Miami. In the slams they always played in the quarterfinal, which is strange.

I voted for Venus-Hingis largely because of the '99 and '00 US Open semis where each one had a victory. The Serena-Capriati is definitely a close second. I must say that just because a match goes 3 sets doesn't make it more of a classic than a two setter. I'll take a 7-6. 7-6 nail-biter anyday over a 3-setter that ends 6-1 or 6-2 in the third.

The best rivalries I've seen in my time are:

Evert vs Navratilova (actually, that was a bit before my time, but I've seen videos and they really did bring the best out of each other)

Navratilova vs Graf

Graf vs Seles

Seles vs Sanchez-Vicario (a little one-sided, you might say, but the two most tenacious fighters I've ever seen really did provide some titillating rallies. And Aranxta got that big win in RG 1998)

Hingis vs Venus Williams

Graf vs Sanchez-Vicario

Capriati vs Serena Williams (which I voted for)

* Note: I don't think the Hingis-Davenport ever produced superb matches, only either error-strewn encounters with Davenport hitting herself to defeat, or where she comprehensively thumped Hingis off the court.
