its very rare for maria to lose to someone ranked 81 and especially on grass

roddick and maria lost today failing to continue their domination in their respective grass tournament

Great play Jamea. I knew you had it in you. She did the things that I thought she needed to do to win. Her first serve percentage was in the high sixties. She finished off points at net. She didn't get down on herself when it appeared that Maria was closing in on a comeback. You deserve this win Jamea. Congrats on your first and likely not last top five win.

I watched the whole match. Jamea simply outplayed Maria in every part of the match. She forced Maria to hit that extra ball every point, often resulting in an error. She put away short balls with conviction and she was not intimidated. Maria was not injured at all, she was moving great, but just making a few too many errors on big points. Sharapova got a code violation for coaching in the middle of the second set. Jamea was understandably elated after the win screaming "Oh my God" and pumping her fist in the air. I am so proud of her, she is such a great girl and I hope she can take the title tomorrow. I've been with you through the tough times Jamea and now it all pays off!

Maria was not injured, here is her take on the match: “She was on top of her game and got on a roll from the beginning,” said Sharapova. “I was ready for a tough match as all of our previous matches had been tough. These things happen. Sometimes you come out and your opponent plays really well and you feel a bit flat.”

Jamea ;) well done  I was quietly confident she could pull the upset off here and she didn't disappoint. I just think Jamea has a fantastic temperment for the game more than anything which is vitally important to have in tennis these days. Also no doubt the British weather suits her  no heat exhaustion for Jamea there :) I just hope she can wrap up a brilliant week by winning tomorrow. It should be a very winnable match for her.

Yes, Maria was very gracious in defeat and her attitude was great today. She really seems to have matured as a person, into an intelligent and composed young woman, and it was great to see a match with no noegative energy from either player and no controversy. Good luck at Wimby Maria :)

just got done reading all the posts in the thread. maria admits to not being 100% she said she was flat today. dont mean to take anything away from jamea she has lots of potentital, but she seemed like she didnt expect to win. cant always play your best so im not making excuses, its just shocking to me. still think masha would benefit from the loss she will be more eager and if she's flat at wimby she will do a better job of pumping herself up. still feel really good about her chances at wimby and this loss will take some pressure off maria which will just help her in the long run. so this is equally good for maria, just a little disapointing for us fans.

In the sixth game Sharapova was issued with a code violation for coaching from the sidelines from dad Yuri as she could be heard telling him to 'shut up'.

It all added to Russian star Sharapova's tale of woe as she failed to muster a single break point in the set, with Jackson visibly stunned in completing the win.
this had to be very distracting for maria. this is the last thing she should be worrying about, especially playing a hot opponent. yuri made things worse i'm sure.

A great win for Jamea! Congratulations to her. I hope she wins the tournament.

It's pathetic that some posters get so much pelasure from a player losing rather than a player winning. It must be a wretched existence.

thank god an umpire had the guts to call yuri on coaching. great win for Jamea. Knowing Venus' luck, she'll draw Jamea in the first or second round.
Yes indeed! Had the umpires had the guts to call Yuri on coaching during Sharapova's matches, he would have had at least 5 code violations a match. He's such a sore loser. It's unbelievable how much coaching they've let him got away with over the years. They've completely turned a blind eye. And it's all because the WTA has labeled his daughter the "It girl," "face of tennis," etc. Let's hope more umpires stop putting up with all his cheatings on the stands from now on.

No I did not forget it. I responded to the part where you tried to make me look bad  When Venus loses any match, the most I do is wish her luck for the next time-- I never hang around the board long enough to dissect the matches. Heck, most times I even say she deserved her defeats, especially when her UFs are through the roof.

In the sixth game Sharapova was issued with a code violation for coaching from the sidelines from dad Yuri as she could be heard telling him to 'shut up'.

No, but what an obsessed troll you are.

Still, that doesn't prevent her from not having already been taking in Yuri's coaching all these years:rolleyes:

Your post that I originally responded to was lame and mean-spirited (like your avatar) and apparantly you are unable to explain your criticism of tennisjunky's post in it.

Nice of you to take the time to hang around the board when Maria loses in order to criticise her fans for posting about their thoughts on Maria's defeat though.

I was at the match, and while Maria obviously didn't play her best (too many UE's) she really didn't play that bad. You have to give the credit to Jackson who played an amazing match and would have beaten most of the top players today. She served really well, hardly missed a ball from the baseline and her retrieving and speed about the court were unbelievable. Many rallies Maria would have her running side to side and she'd just get everything back deep until Maria made the error. The standard of this match was far, far better than Zvonerava - Tu.

And you STILL won't answer my original question, which was why you object to a Maria fan discussing the hows and whys of a big loss for her. This is a board for discussion after all.

Surprises come in small packages! Nice win for Jamea, hopefully she can win the title and use her momentum to have a nice run at Wimby. Most players in the top 100 have enough talent, they mostly lack that 'something' extra, and often times an inner belief in their own talent. It would be nice for US tennis to have a new face in the top 20. She's a long way off from a feat like that, but this may be the push she needed to get there.

When it comes down to it the wta is more often about personalities, not playing tennis. Maria has a cool 50 million in the bank, mega endorsements, no hunger. Winning Wimbledon so soon was the worst thing that could happen to this now one slam wonder if she wanted to go down as one of the greats in tennis. It`s ova for the choker but she has mega money. Quite a nice silver lining to the cloud..... ;)

its very rare for maria to lose to someone ranked 81 and especially on grass

roddick and maria lost today failing to continue their domination in their respective grass tournament

Apparently not, I checked and Mashona was # 81 when she beat Maria at New Haven in 2005. Obviously, if you are an American with the last name of a President ranked # 81, you have a shot at Maria

the better player actually lost today and i do accept it. just saying how distracting it must have been for maria getting the code violation for her dad and having to tell him to be quiet. this would be distracting to any player and can cause them to lose a little focus. this isnt why maria lost, but it didnt help any either.
Oh please, Yuri has been coaching Maria all along. Someone just had the guts to call him on it. The Russian players were the first to go public with his coaching. I also recall Venus giving him the quiet sign during one of her matches with Maria.

please, a coach violation does not make a person lose a match  if you can lose concentration the whole match just because the umpire said "coach violation miss sharapova", you're kinda useless. why cant you just accept the plain fact that jamea played better on the day and won? from all accounts by pple who watched, maria didnt even play that bad. so accept it, jackson played great, she won. full stop

Like some others, I knew this was a possibility, but not likely. Good to see Jamea elevate her game. This is a big step in the development of a young player-- getting that first big win.
