Philippoussis gets wild card for Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Mark Philippoussis, the 2003 Wimbledon runner-up, was one of eight men who received wild-card invitations Friday to play in the grass-court Grand Slam tournament.

Philippoussis has been plagued by injuries and he's currently ranked 176th.

Others getting wild cards were Romania's Andrei Pavel and six British men: Jamie Baker, Richard Bloomfield, Alex Bogdanovic, Jamie Delgado, Martin Lee, and Alan Mackin.

Women's wild cards went to: Australia's Alicia Molik, Belarus' Victoria Azarenka, Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska and five British players: Sarah Borwell, Naomi Cavaday, Anne Keothavong, Katie O'Brien and Melanie South.

Jelena Dokic, a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2000, was given a wild-card entry into the women's qualifying event.

Wimbledon begins June 26.

Jelena definitly deserves one in the main draw. But maybe she requested a qualifying instead, Jelena definitly wants to prove people wrong and work for her results.

She deserved one into the main draw.
that may be true, but just just lost in a 25K.
qualifying would give her A LOT of confidence.
losing in the first round would only add to her frustration.
i don't want to see her take a few months away again to retool her game. i'd like to see her win matches and progress in whatever way she can.
plus, she'll get a hot hand on the grass courts to really get ready for her first round (if she qualifies). these will be her first grass matches in a long time.

No she didn't. Her results of late have been terrible :tape: (when she's actually played that is)

At least this way she gets some match practice before the main draw begins (if she can qualify of course)

At least we'll have some women to watch for once.

Alicia and Sam in main.

Jelena, Nicole and Casey..hopefully Sophie in qualies.

results of late don't suggest she deserved a maindraw wc, past results at this tournament do. but i'm glad she only got a qual wc, being that she wants to work her way back into it, i think what she's looking for atm are matches, and to play as many as she can. if she plays qualifying she's more likely to play more matches than if she slots straight into the main draw.

*PHEW* that this was the reason she pulled out of that 25k. GREAT move Jelena :yeah:. Grass suits her game better than clay, and qualifying @ the 25k last week means she won't go in completely cold. All the best to her.

For all we know she may have asked for a Q WC? I think it is a good move, she can spend the next few days warming up on the grass and with a good draw perhaps she can do well :)

Can anyone believe this same girl and boy were the winners of the Hopman Cup and now both need qualifying wildcards for wimbledon.

I'm gonna be honest and say neither deserves it.

Mark got one into the Main Draw not Qualifying.

Meanwhile I fail to see how a Finalist & a Semi-Finalist who are both players with large fanbases or at least a following should ever not deserve WCs. They are playing tennis, they are trying to get back to the top, why would they not deserve one?

Don't get me wrong, I love them both. But in my eyes they've had too many chances to redeem themselves and they haven't done anything. Sure Jelena may have won 3, 4 matches (but that hardly proves anything). And they may have large fanbases but I think its only fair to give some of the youngsters a go, if Jelena & Mark really wanted to make it to the top they need to do it again (from scratch) just like they got there the first time. So far neither has shown the will or committment in their results.

Explain how Jelena Dokic has had 'too many chances to redeem' herself. Also, perhaps you might to take a look at the fact that the girl is playing qualifying at 25 K Challengers in order to build her game and results instead of expecting a hand out to a WTA Tournament every week instead of questioning whether she is beginning at scratch.

I think this is a bit harsh.
They both showed the commitment and will to achieve very good results and rankings throughout their careers. Can you imagine the sacrifices they made to get to the top ten of their respective tours?
Now they are having tough times. Professional tennis is not an easy world. They deserve any chances they can get.

She's been handed many wildcards in many tournaments but never really seems to do much with it. I honestly hope she can prove me wrong.

Wrong. Jelena has been playing Challengers for less than a year. In that period she has played a total of 5 challengers. In 4 of those challengers, she has played the qualifying event instead of accepting a wild card. In the past year she has received a total of 2 WC's (one of which she won fairly and squarely through a playoff). Your asssertion that she has been handed many wildcards is simply wrong and the mere fact that you can't even respond with any factual truth makes it hard to believe that you honestly believe anything.

The thing is the past is the past ,results speak for themselves. Mark and Jelena have been out of tennis for a long long time, and they deserve all the help they can get but I think there's a certain point at which you need to actually do something yourself.

There is a certain point when you can't expect hand-outs anymore. Jelena Dokic is not at that point yet. She hasn't been receiving WC's week in, week out like Stevenson or Kournikova did. Past results are manifestly important: Jelena has given a lot of herself to the Tour when she was at the top and her past results indicate an ability to play at a level higher than 99% of other players. Until you shown a complete inability to regain some form; or there are other candidates who are more meritorious than yourself, a qualifying wildcard should not be a point of contention.
