I just saw pieces of hingis/kournikova vs. zvereva/davenport and hingis served really well. she hit a few aces because she sped up her racket head speed on the serve. they looked to be in the low 100s. i am bewildered why hingis simply does not speed up her motion. the motions is decent (does not really use her legs), it just needs to be faster. if she had a better serve, im postive she could be number one again and win more slams.

I think some people don't understand the shorter you are, the more physical effort it takes to hit bomb after bomb. Having height is such a huge advantage when it comes to serving, which Martina doesn't have. Yeah I know Justine has a huge serve, but look at two things. For one she always has a low 1st serve %, usually around 50%. 2nd she's a lot stronger than Martina physically so it's easier for her to put in the effort to serve bomb serves.

Maybe it's to do with effort.

Martina gets it to around 170km.... there's not a huge difference between that and say 180km if you place it well, why waste your energy?

That's a possibility

with martina her aces usually come from placement and her first serve is decent the problem is when she misses her first serve. she has problems with her 2nd usually so she either double faults or hits a really slow 2nd serve.

Completely agree. BUT - I would strongly argue that Hingis' serve is not near as good as it used to be. For instance - watch the US Open '99 SF against Venus, and you see Hingis serving extremely well in my opinion. Definately not wracking up the aces, but her second serve was more reliable, she had more variety on her first serve, and did NOT slice it as much. Then again, watch that 99 match and every single part of Hingis' game is 10x better than nowadays.

I can compare this match with her match against Dementieva in Berlin. I have both on DVD, and she was absolutely perfect, hitting winners from everywhere and soooo few mistakes;)! In USO 1999 the first set was probably her best ever, but her level dropped incredibly after that (3 UFES in 1st set and 23 UFES in 2nd:eek: ), and in the third it was some awesome rallies from both;) In Berlin, just watch the games from 0-1 to 4-1 in the first set:worship:

Martina's serve was definitely better years ago.. it was never going to dominate but she certainly hit it harder and with more authority.

but I feel like there are not that many players whose serve ImPROVES with time. .. Justine's definitely did. Serena's did after her US Open win I think.. but most players by the time they are playing big time on the WTA.. their serve is what it is and only serves to get a bit worse with age and nerves.. i think...

Oh my god, that first set was absolutely ridiculous. Even in the last two sets when there were plenty of errors between the two (especially for Marti), there were awesome rallies almost every point. The thing I liked about Hingis' errors is that she REALLY wanted to win the match, and played with the most determination and effort I ever remember seeing from her. Her one-handed backhand around the net post was probably the most intense shot I've ever seen. :worship:
