View Full Version : Anyone wish Maria would play more doubles?

Even if I'm biased as I love to see the 2 Maria's as partners, I wish Maria would play more doubles with any other players really. So many top players do play doubles even if it is only in the Grand Slams, she could learn from other players and also develop parts of her game that need working on in match conditions, like Volleys for instance.

yeah i know what you mean, but she didnt do too well last year in the douboles with maria k so she probably got put off although she did win the year before!

I'm fine with her not playing doubles, in fact, I think she shouldn't right now, she can barely play enough healthy single matches, doubles would kill her right now, she has only just stopped growing (at least that's what we hope) she has to build muscles and stamina first before she can think about playing doubles again, great for the future yes, but not a good choice right now.

I understand both your points, nice avatar btw ;)
Is it so crazy for Maria just to turn up for a Tournament and play Doubles only in it?

No, but I can't see it ever happening.

Yeah I doubt it will ever happen.

I also wanted Masha to play more doubles because I think she is a pretty good doubles player (she won 3 tournaments and was also runner up once. Before winning Wimbly she had as many doubles titles as single titles:p) but I changed my mind because of all the injuries she had last year .
If she gets injuried even when she doesn't play a lot , I can imagine that it would be even worse if she plays more doubles.

It would be nice to see Maria playing Doubles again but its probably not best for her or else she would be playing it. Im sure Masha enjoys it when she gets the chance but being in top condition for singles is more important to her right now.

well, doubles isn't that taxing on the player, which is why Martina Navratilova is still able to do it even though she's near-50. Obviously, you don't have to cover as much of the court as in singles, and unless you choose to engage the opposition in much the same way you do singles (heavy groundies from the baseline), the effort is relatively light. some players do participate in doubles while coming back from injury, since it gives them some sort of "match practice" while minimizing risk of aggravating the injury.

and there's always the "improves your volleying" part, which is true, but still dependent on

1) how the player plays doubles in the first place. like I said above, some players play the same way whether it's singles or doubles, the only difference is that in doubles, they're not alone on their side of the net. basically, in doubles, they play like two singles players, both planted on the baseline. their only forays to the net are to retrieve dropshots.

2) how well a player absorbs the "lesson"

personally, I don't think Maria should play doubles (in spite of what I said above), simply because she's always the "dominant" half of the partnership, partly because that's what she is, and partly because most of the attention is on her. if she were an experienced, skilled, top ranked doubles player, that would be OK, because the submissive partner would be learning from her. but she isn't a very experienced doubles player, no matter how high some of us may think her potential is, and being, in my opinion, the dominant half, she's not exactly looking at her partner for pointers.

would she partner with paola suarez, or say, daniela hantuchova, martina hingis or sveta kuznetsova or anastasia myskina? I don't think so. well, with suarez, maybe, but not with the singles superstars.

if you recall her mixed doubles stint at the 2004 US Open, Max Mirnyi, a veteran at doubles, did most of the heavy lifting. Maria wasn't able to do much. How much she learned from that, I don't know. as far as I can tell, she's still at the same level as she was in 2004.

Ho not really im not a fan of doubles myself and i think it would take some of the wind out of her sails for the singles.

I wish she would play more doubles. Not every tournament but sometimes it would be fine.

i think it would certainly help her with her reflexes and her net game. maria wants to succeed in her singles which a lot of top players are like that. perhaps when she gets older she'll play more. doubles definitely wouldn't hurt her.

also, i think doubles is a more relaxed atmosphere. i remember at the 2004 us open, roger federer's opponent retired so they showed maria and max mirnyi against martina navratilova and leander paes. maria and max lost the match but it looked like maria really enjoyed herself out there. it was a nice treat. now if only they showed doubles on tv!!!

doubles is also where you are legally allowed to talk to someone who is on your side: your partner. you can't do that in singles, or there would be a coaching violation. there's always someone close to give pointers, to console, calm, to cheer you on. I agree about the relaxed atmosphere. although competition at the upper tier is fierce, there's little of the animosity that sometimes is present in singles matches. most of the time, the players are "playful" in doubles often laughing at their own mistakes. partners can also celebrate each point won without worries, chest bumping or high-fiving each other, or fist pumping and just plain cheering.

doubles was one of only two situations where the great John McEnroe was generally well-behaved. With someone else (other than the opponent) sharing the court with him, John never went to his usual tantrums. I'm sure he did throw a tantrum or two, but never as frequently nor as lengthily as he did in singles.

(As for the other situation where Johnny Mac was behaved, that was when he was playing Bjorn Borg, the Swedish master whom McEnroe respected deeply and regarded as the best player of their time.)

Yeah I guess it's a case of how well their tennis and their skill matches each other, I mean, with Maria K, she's more experienced in doubles than Maria S, in terms of matchplay and opponents, so that's probably why they make a good team. But people who may seem to go well together, like Maria and Nicole, because they both have so much power, thier games and personalities might not gel.
But I agree, it would be nice to see her playing some more doubles, but not right now.

I think both Maria and Tatiana would make a great team. Maria likes to 'start' off her matches early, and Tatiana 'starts' hers around in the middle and both fight 'til the end.

Yes. Imagine the hilarity at the press conference.

Media: So Maria, what does this new partnership with Elena bring to the court in your opinion?

Maria Sharapova: Well, a lot, I think. Elena has a powerful serve, and I have a powerful scream. The opponents will have their hands and ears full. [ cocks her head and giggles as reporters laugh in unison]

I think they could win because Anna is better in double than in single. She has even a better volley than Masha :tape:

I think it would do her good to play some doubles; even if she did it half the time. Navratilova would be a good partner for her...MN would be a good teacher for her.

I hadn't really thought about the grunting part!, that would be even funnier, maybe Elena might try to up her vocals to Maria's level, it could be a battle of the grunt!:)

if you really want a battle of the grunters, or more a battle of the screamers, the why not have Maria play with Venus (aside from the fact that she wouldn't!) could be entertaining! :p

It's up to her if she plays doubles or not. If she's happy doing the singles matches, then that's fine.

I'm really surprised Nike hasn't tried to get her to play alongside Hantuchova. They should have thought of that a couple of years back. I have no idea how they get on with each other.

It would benefit Maria as she would get to play alongside a good doubles player, and Nike would gain press exposure and a bit of money...however, I think "Hantuyama" don't need breaking up, yet. Also, it could spectacularly backfire.

In my opinion, if she's to do it, Vera Zvonareva would be a good partner.

Maria in doubles:

Last time she played doubles was at Birmingham 2005 with Kirilenko, they lost 6-4 6-0 to Bartoli/Tanasugarn.

They did win a doubles title in 2004, and yes, it was Birmingham.

She's partnered Tanasugarn, Zvonareva, Kirilenko, Pratt, Dulko, Bartoli, Harkleroad, Raymond, and De Los Rios.

She won two doubles titles with Tanasugarn in 2003, at Tokyo and Luxembourg.
