View Full Version : Wimbledon Awaits!

Jun 11th, 2006, 05:08 PM
The Clay season is over, with Ai having a mediocre singles season, but excellent doubles season (QF at Berlin, W at Rome, RUP at Roland Garros) and we can only expect the grass season to be, well, greener!

Entered in Birmingham, Eastbourne and Wimbledon!
Go Sugi!

Ai beat Srebotnik! I wasn't feeling so good about this match but she got through winning a tough first set tibreak (which isn't something she's been able to do much of recently) and then going down 5-0 in the second before making a comeback to 5-4...though she lost the set. Then she cruised in th final set!! Now she's up against Kuznetsova!! Go Ai!!!

Jun 20th, 2006, 05:51 PM
Good effort though, even if she lost 1-6 6-1 6-2 to Kuznetsova. It shows that she still has the capacity to trouble the tough players =)

A. Sugiyama Interview - Day 2
Tuesday, 27 June, 2006

Q. Morigami has just told us that as a player that she respects, she's very much looking forward to playing with you. How are you feeling about that particular match?

AI SUGIYAMA: Yeah, she's been playing good, especially on grass court lately. Yeah, I know her since we are, you know, not junior but maybe so many years ago. Yeah, we both know pretty well how we play again. So it's gonna be tough match for me as well, but I'm really look forward to play against her as well.

R2: def. A. Morigami
A. Sugiyama Interview - Day 3
Wednesday, 28 June, 2006

Q. You said yesterday that your kind of shared past with Morigami meant that you knew each other's form well. Do you think that helped you in today's match?

AI SUGIYAMA: Yeah, I know. Yeah, of course for each of us we know pretty well how we play against.

Yeah, I think, yeah, it helped for me 'cause I could see, uhm, what should I have to what should I do on the court today, so I could visualize what I had to do. I focus about myself more, so I think it helped.

Q. And you seemed a lot more relaxed and confident on court today. Do you think you'd well and truly got over your Wimbledon first match nerves?

AI SUGIYAMA: No. Actually, I think I was a bit didn't have a feeling of my forehand first round and I was struggling a bit. And also I didn't know Cavaday at all. It was kind of tough to find out the way I play. But I fix my forehand after first round, and I was pretty confidence the way I play.

So from the beginning, actually, I was really comfortable on the court today.

Q. With a Japanese opponent and so many Japanese in the crowd, did it feel like Wimbledon today?

AI SUGIYAMA: (Laughing). Well, actually, for the Japanese crowd, I think they don't know how to I mean, just watching but not to support actually for both of us. So our court was pretty quiet today.

But, yeah, I'm really happy the way I played today. Then, yeah, it's gonna be tough one for next round, but I'm really looking forward to play. I guess Hingis is winning now, so, yeah, it's gonna be a good one for me.

Q. There were a lot of strange line calls today. How easy is it not to lose your focus in these situations?

AI SUGIYAMA: Yeah, yeah, it was unusual that I get so upset about it. Normally, I can really let it go. But today, I was so sure that the ball was really out, so (smiling)...

And it was not only one time. And then pretty that moment, beginning of the second set, it was really important moment for me 'cause I had a chance to break her serve at the beginning and I can get the good rhythm. So it was really important moment.

So I was a little upset, but I probably shouldn't be 'cause the mark is not like on clay court. So I need to be let it go next time.

Q. And probably an interesting match next.

AI SUGIYAMA: Yeah, it's gonna be a tough one for me, but I'm really looking forward to it.

A. Sugiyama Interview - Day 5
Friday, 30 June, 2006

Q. How does that rank in terms of your singles performances in Grand Slams?

AI SUGIYAMA: Oh, it's great. I mean, especially today, playing against someone like Martina and then on Centre Court. Yeah, I can't expect more than that.

Q. You were 3 Love down. She had the momentum in the third. How did you manage to turn it around?

AI SUGIYAMA: Yeah, I didn't serve well at the beginning of the third set, so I lost my rhythm at the beginning and she was always attack my second serve, of course. But it seems like she was also tired. Then it was pretty humid, yeah, hot and humid.

We had long rallies, and she was shaking her legs. And so maybe I got a chance if I can still hang in there. Tried to get back the ball back into the court as much as I can, and then it turned around. So it was good.

Q. Your backhand was working really well today.

AI SUGIYAMA: Yeah, yeah. My backhand was going really well, especially up the line.

And then, yeah, I think I ran good today also, and I moved the court really good. So it helped.

Q. When you were playing so well and then things went a little bad, did you have memories of the Sharapova match?

AI SUGIYAMA: Not really. Not really, yeah.

Q. Martina said that you don't seem to have any weaknesses. Would you agree with her analysis?

AI SUGIYAMA: Sorry? She said...

Q. That you don't have any weaknesses.

AI SUGIYAMA: (Smiling). Thanks. That's a nice compliment.

Yeah, well, today my forehand getting better. Normally everyone likes to attack my forehand, but today I get my good rhythm of my forehand as well. Of course backhand is always better, but, uhm, I think, yeah, total the balance was really good today for me.

Q. Are you confident about your next round?

AI SUGIYAMA: Next one, I play against Bremond. Yeah, she got a game, good game for grass especially. She serves big and then she's coming to the net a lot. Yeah, she is beating Patty also. She's been playing really good.

So, yeah, of course I have confidence now, but I'll play just one match by one match. Then everything is, yeah, different match, of course. So I got to be ready for the next one, and I just focus everything.

Jul 3rd, 2006, 04:32 PM
she lost  I thought she was playing better and would win this one...

Its a shame

Jul 3rd, 2006, 06:03 PM
She gave this match to Bremond...such an easy draw to the QF after beaqting Hingis...oh well, still a great tourney!!! Now onto Fed Cup!

Jul 3rd, 2006, 08:12 PM
It is a shame, but a good tournament nonetheless :bounce: A Round of 16 showing, upsetting the Comeback Swiss Miss is nothing to be ashamed of!

(>_> I don't know what's worse though... This loss, or their first round upset in Doubles >_> Both disappointing, but move on, move on!)
