Okay. It's getting to me now.

Maria has been one of the most consistently good players on the tour over the past eighteen months, despite her injuries, yet she never seems to get the breaks in the big tournaments.

Even in her Wimbledon win, she didn't get an easy draw. And since then she has always hit tough-as-nails top opponents playing their best of the year, in the Semis or otherwise. She's had Serena, Henin-Hardenne, Venus, Clijsters, and Henin-Hardenne again. At the AO she played a tough tough match against JHH, just lost, and then JHH collapsed with a virus against Mauresmo, who had already had two byes and two other collapsing players in her draw.

Here at RG 2006, she gets Safina playing an unbelievable game from 5-2 down. In the zone. No errors, everything goes in. Safina then collapses in the next round to Kuznetsova. Kuznetsova on the other hand has had three top players, Maria, Venus and Mauresmo taken out of her draw, and now only faces Nicole before the final! Almost a repeat of her 2004 US Open draw, where a succession of top players were knocked out of her draw or got injuries beforwe she met them.

It really does take luck as well as talent to win a slam. It's time Maria got some.

oh my god i was just thinking that! i was seeing how dinara lead kuzzy and then lost.. maybe maria is changing the trend of losing to eventual champions..
i'm just hoping maria has a good draw for wimbledon and no sudden inspirational plays from her opponents hehe

I agree with her bad luck, except the Safina match, this was a match she should have won.
Maria lost that match, that's what makes that loss so terrible, normally she just losses to players that are simply to good on that certain day, that wasn't the case against Safina.
She made the winners to get back in the match, and the errors to lose the match.

yup agreed. for that match, she lost it herself.. unfortunate, but let's hope it won't happen again :)

Hopefully Maria will be fully healthy going into Wimbledon. If she can win Birmingham, that should give her a confidence boost after the Safina give-away match. If the luck of the draw doesn't go Maria's way, confidence and health are what is going to propel Maria to a second Wimbledon title. Maria can beat anyone when she's in top form, whether they're on fire or not.
A nice draw wouldn't hurt though. ;)

Hopefully things will run Maria's way soon.

You can't ignore the huge amount of luck Safina had in that last set for sure, mishit shots for her were going in, the net went her way, makes you wonder who Maria has upset! *Looks skywards*

Agreed, Maria could use a bit of luck, esp with injuries. Her time will come, I've no doubt about that. :D

yea Maria has been getting the short straw a lot of the time....cant believe it when opponents play a blinder against Masha then fall over in the next Round. :o Maria can turn the tide though!

This is part of her development not just physically but mentally i remember Jstine and Serena would throw away leads in their younger days and would be beaten but eventually look what happened, they got tired of losing and im sure with a few more years under her belt Masha will get even better. There is also i alot of jealousy from the other girls and i higher motivation to beat her, she has all the looks, money and fame and they want to knock her off even more, Anna K had the same thing happening to her. Its definatly time for a little luck on the injury side though

Very good post!
I think that there are some aspects of the game in which Maria needs to learn much more. I'm not talking about technique and shots here, but the persistance in being tough, which makes a legend. It seems Maria tends to get loose in crucial points, when she should tighten her game; it's like she forgets the rule of thumb: "A match is not finished until the last point is played."
She should not look down at Roland Garros as well, it seems to me she's not motivated enough to do great things on clay. She must be the most hungry for winning on any surface, not only on grass.
Sure injuries have been bugging her but there also, she lets it get to her head. Look at Kim and Justine for example, they had their share of health problem but they come back super-tough. I think Maria gets scared by her injuries so it jeopardizes her focus on victory.
Anyway, to her credit she still have some time to sort those issues out and I would assume she's in a transition phase, growing from a teen phenomenon to a grown-up professional. But she'd better watch out, the likes of Vaidisova are upcoming, Kuznetsova, Groenefeld and Safina are getting tougher so Maria's got a lot of competition to expect. She cannot rely on luck to somehow dominate the field.

Yes. maria lost her focus in the Safina match. you could see it in her face. She lost her stern "game face" and was showing her frustration. You must never do that in tense situations since it just gives your opponent hope that you are unravelling. At 5-1 up she should have just looked at Safina like "Struggle as much as you like, you're dead and buried."

Masha could definitely use lots of luck though.

Absolutly right..players used to up their game against Anna K just to prove that looks and endorsments couldn't help her on the court and they do the same to Maria, The younger girls are jelous that it's Maria getting the spotlight not them and the older girls are upset that someone so young is fast becoming the most recognised tennis player over them who have been working hard for years.

So they all have a point to prove when playing Maria.
