Not sure what tournament Maria has entered for her Wimbledon warm up but thought we could start a thread for that now, instead of wallowing in pity.

This is the best time of the year for Masha fans and I can't wait because it takes place here in the UK.

When the entry list/draw is released for whatever tournament Maria enters could someone post it here please...Thank you!

It's horrid I was watching "Paparazzi" on BBC (where the follow the guys stalking celebs) and they were following Sienna Miller after the whole Jude thing, she couldn't even get to her car because there were so many of them.

This is the only time of the year the British press can get pics of Maria on british soil so her 'out and about' pictures will be wanted by most tabloids, so there will be a barrage of photographers.

i wish the grass season were a little longer though.. :(

Well, the grass season USED TO BE longer. Remember, there are basically two summers in the tennis world, especially the Grand Slams, the one in the north we're familiar with, and then the one in Australia, and they follow each other in the calendar, so it's a long period. In the old days, after Wimbledon and the US Open, which were both played on grass, the Australian Open followed, which was also played on grass. This was back when the AO was still played in Kooyong, towards the year end.

Unfortunately, since the AO moved to Melbourne Park/Rebound Ace and since the USO moved the Flushing Meadow(also hardcourt), only Wimbledon has remained as a grass court GS.

Grass can be high maintenance. you have to make it grow, then keep it that way, at least early in the tournament. You need God's help for that. Or whoever you pray to.

But it is possible. After all, rain falls in a lot of places and grass can grow there. Unfortunately, just because we want a grass court tournament in a spot on the map doesn't mean the WTA will hold a tournament there. It's still a business, if there are no crowds and sponsors/TV to attract, the WTA won't come. Even in the States, some places in the interior are losing tournaments to bigger markets in Florida and California. Never mind grass, even hardcourt venues are losing out because their town isn't that well known. To prolong the grass season, you need to convince an already large tennis market city or town to build a grass court. Or dig up its existing hardcourt and replace it with a grass court.

actual grass and the seeds they produce now would make sense for the tournaments to return to grass, its a better surface for the players anyway injury wise, look at the english premiership the pitches are like bowling greens all season even in jan/feb which use to turn into a mudbath in the goal areas,I honestly think they should have a think about it because theres far too many injurys on the tour,I don't like clay and I think the FO has been pretty boring and actual think rome was a better tournament playwise and the way it was organised with the night matches.

Yes, I've been thinking about that, too. How come the world can afford thousands of posh golf courses (just one of them has more grass than all the courts of Wimbledon), thousands of football pitches, even thousands of baseball diamonds, all with grass, and only a measly 1-month or so tennis grasscourt season? there ought to be a law...

Something should be done about it, because there are players wo specialise on clay and they get ages to pick up points and clock up big wins, while as players' whose games are suited to grass, like Maria, get 2 tournaments to shine on.

back on topic...Win or lose, I dont think Birmingham would really affect Maria's Wimbledon chances because really she's far and above the best grass court player out of this draw and I dont think anyone else in this draw has proven herself tough in grandslams and in particular Wimbledon. But I am glad she's in because this gives her time to adjust to the surface and I'm sure she'll do well. This is Maria's tournament to lose (probably why I think this way). All pertaining to Sharapova of course.

I think Birmingham will have an affect on Maria's Wimbledon chances, if only because it will give her more confidence. Sure, the field isn't terribly strong (at least in comparison to Eastbourne), but a title on the grass going into Wimbledon has got to feel pretty good.

Hey Guys here is the draw.
http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/global/includes/TrackIt.asp?file=/global/Pdfs/events/2006/birmingham_draws.pdf

Masha's draw is pretty tough but there is no one there that she cant handle. Li will be a tough third round ans Sugiama can be tough but there is really no one on this tournament that Masha cant handle.

Theres a few decent players in Maria's half but she should take care of them pretty comfortably. Some tricky players in the bottom half, will be interesting to see who comes through...

Andy.
Jun 10th, 2006, 02:30 PM
Jankovic and Daniilidou are both very handy players and can be troublesome on a good day and ones to look out for. Stosur is also potentially a very dangerous grass courter.

haha i think it's a cakewalk tournament for Maria. regardless of how the draw shapes up to be with the players that are participating in it.

i'm only excited about ONE other thing.

her 2006 Wimbledon outfit. i know she doesn't reveal it till Wimbledon but the colors on her Birmingham outfit would slightly hint the colors in her Wimbledon dress. and her Wimbledon dresses are ALWAYS ALWAYS stunning.

more excited then ever. now. a new title and a new outfit.

bbc are always negative it said at the dfs site.
Maria Sharapova made a welcome return to the grass courts of the DFS Classic today as she stormed into the third round with an impressive 6-4,6-2 victory over American Ahsha Rolle.
The top seed and two-time defending champion delighted the sell-out crowd who were forced to wait for her for almost an hour following a rain delay. After the weather washed out much of Tuesday’s play, all scheduled singles matches were completed today.
“It feels good to be back. It was a good first match to have as physically I feel good just now,” said Sharapova. “Her serve is pretty big, so I had to take my opportunity and chances when I could. It’s great to be back in Birmingham though, every time I come back everyone is so welcoming and I love that.”
The world number four now extends her win streak at the DFS Classic, held at the Edgbaston Priory Club, Birmingham to 11 matches having won back to back titles in 2004 and 2005. She also reached the semi finals on her debut in 2003 as a qualifier.

Nice Solid start to the tournament for Masha considering, now she can lift and improve match by match

msharafan
Jun 15th, 2006, 06:27 AM
yeah but she wont have much time for practicing, and aparently li was very impressive in beating danilidou. and just to put an interesting stat in there. last year maria needed 3 sets to beat danidilou on grass in birmingham, as it is elenis fav surface. but this year li beat eleni in straight sets, and people who were there and saw both matches said they thought li was more impressive! so i think we have a bit to worry about. also remember in miami this year li had a 4-1 lead over maria in the second set but choked it away. will she want revevnge or will she crumble again? i didnt see that particular match, but it was probably one of marias second set lapses, so hopfully well be ok, i doubt welll see too many more of them in the future after RG! i also got this from another site:

It was hardly the most convincing of performances from the two-time defending champion, but for Sharapova it is a case of getting in as many matches as possible before heading to the All England Club.

While practice makes perfect, mentally she is attuned, with the 19-year-old Russian stating: "Tennis is such a mental game, and going into Wimbledon I feel I am 100% strong mentally.

"It's one of my big strengths that I am mentally tougher than a lot of girls on the tour.

"I don't give up, even when I am down, whatever the score. I feel I have to give it all I have and take the chances."

Sharapova insists such a facet of her character has not happened by accident, adding: "It's hard to teach someone that.

"A lot of things in my life have not dropped in my lap. My parents and I have had to work for a lot of the things we have now.

"I grew up really fast when I was training alone at the academy in Florida, but then I really didn't have a lot of choice.

"My parents made me realise you have to work hard to earn things."

Sharapova will play 13th seed Na Li of China in today's third round in which seven of the top eight seeds compete, with the only absentee being Daniela Hantuchova who withdrew before the start with a wrist injury.

Sharapova feels she can only improve as the tournament progresses as she said: "It's just a matter of getting the matches under my belt.

"It was at least good to be back on grass again. As the match went on I started to feel better about my game.

"It takes a few days to get used to things, but as you do you gain in confidence.

"So I know there's far more to come. I'm looking forward to raising my game, which is what you try to do at every tournament."

sounds to me that maria is trying to convince herself and fellow competiters that she has gotten over what has happened to her at RG and that she is never going to let what happened to her happen again, at RG that is. anyway good luck masha do youre best against li and you should win!

SHARAPOVA ECLIPSED BY WORLD CUP LURE
By Ian Parkes, PA Sport

Maria Sharapova may be one of the world's most beautiful women, but she knows she cannot compete with England playing in a World Cup.

In beating China's Na Li 6-2 6-4 to reach the quarter finals of the dfs Classic, it was Sharapova's 12th consecutive win on the grass at Edgbaston, and the 200th overall in her career.

But with the game on centre court starting just before 4pm, the 19-year-old was aware of a lack of male admirers watching her as the clock ticked down towards England's clash with Trinidad and Tobago.

"I barely saw any men out there today. I think they were all in the pub," smiled Sharapova.

Her latest workout on grass was comfortable enough, if not without its problems as she was broken in the fourth game of the first set, although at that stage she held a 3-0 lead after twice breaking Li.

After again breaking her opponent in the opening game of the second set, and then moving into a 3-1 lead, Li managed to level at 4-4.

Sharapova, though, displayed real quality in closing out the set and reaching her new milestone, and will now face 12th seed Mara Santangelo in the last eight tomorrow.

For the 2004 Wimbledon champion, and a woman who already has 11 WTA Tour titles to her name, hitting the 200-win mark does mean a lot to her.

"Playing match after match you don't focus on your record, but when you do hear statistics like this it is very nice," commented the two-time reigning champion in this event.

"It seems like I have played so long, but hopefully in a few years that record will be even better. I look forward to achieving more."

 Yep, even Maria couldn't defeat England in the the World Cup but I bet alot of the guys wish they had watched Maria then gone and caught the last 30 mins of the match as the first hour was terrible!

Well done Maria, and arrrgh at that match, in our halls of residence we had a sweepstake going on for the last goal scored in the match (the winner gets £90), I put down the 89th minute and they scored in the 90th :fiery:
