ESPN plans to show hours of live (?) French Open coverge over the weekend, which makes me wonder, who is your LEAST favorite tennis announcer, your FAVORITE??

THe least favorite has to go to Mary Jo Fernandez. She may have been a decent tennis player, but on the air she sounds like she's got marbles in her mouth, never completes her sentences, and HATES the Williams sisters.

My fave is Bill MacAtee, always insightful and professional. How about you???

May 25th, 2002, 05:12 PM
Here in the UK, the BBC TV coverage seems to be full of male chauvenist commentators who have so little regard for women's tennis, its ridiculous! I also wish they'd get rid of John Barrett - he's so stuffy & dull, which is doing nothing to help bring in younger viewers... :(
I always turn the sound down & listen to the radio coverage which is much better! :)

May 25th, 2002, 05:21 PM
I love the Fernandez-Godsick/Shriver partnership!

May 25th, 2002, 05:44 PM
IMO, least favorites are Pam Shriver, Mary Jo Fernandez, John McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, and Cliff Drysdale.

My favorites are Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova but can't remember if they were announcers during RG.

Brian Stewart
May 25th, 2002, 05:55 PM
Best: Navratilova. Insightful. Good eye for talent.

Worst: Drysdale and P.McEnroe when they're in the midst of an epiph-Andy. Let's see him do something more significant before proclaiming him the second coming of Rod Laver. It'll take a bit more than one slam Quality Finish (with draw so friendly that I could have reached the quarters :)) to convince me. (Hmm, Chanda's had 3 QF's, and even a SF. By their stand(y)ards, she should be enshrined at Newport. :D)
Whatever happened to letting players develop and achieve things before weighing them down with expectations?

May 25th, 2002, 07:00 PM
Both of the McEnroe's, but especially John!!!! They are so sexist and jealous of the women's game. They actually get happy when a top seed in the women's draw looses, so they can steal the coverage for the men.

I also don't really care for Mary Jo

The best have to be Martina Navratilova and Zina Garrison (the one annoucer who actually likes Venus & Serena)

May 25th, 2002, 07:13 PM
Pam is the best :) Just for the comedy value ;)

I actually think Virginia Wade is good - some people may think she's a little old fashioned but she has a tremendous knowledge of the game.

And I'm totally biased, but when Arantxa did the commentary for the Australian Open in 99, I thought she was excellent ;):)

May 25th, 2002, 07:22 PM
I agree with you re Zina...don't care for Nav, though congrats to her on her doubles win in Madrid!

Crazy Canuck
May 25th, 2002, 07:26 PM
Biased commentators? :gasp:

Since when? :o

May 25th, 2002, 07:54 PM
Drysdale, Mcenroe, Mcenroe(yes, both)

I like Pam, M.J.F., Mary C., & Martina N.

Obviously they played on the women;s tour & show respect.
Have you noticed that when a Mcenroe or a Drysdal commentate they always talk about the men??!!!!!!!
This final, Serena against Justine, just a week ago, Drysdale was saying, 'and coming up Safin & Federer, ...................................'
& he kept talking about them etc......
Mcenroe is just a bitch as well.

& what about the commercials???????????????????
they are 25 minutes long and the two games together are 2 minutes.
The match ends up as a ratio to commerials 1:908523890635

May 25th, 2002, 08:01 PM
virginia wade is good. she knows a lot, as someone else said, and keeps up with all the gossip behind the scenes. she's rarely biased though she did like Steffi.

also peter fleming is a good commentator and analyst.

sue barker is a really biased presenter. the gushing over tim is awful, and she seems to gush about every star like agassi......

jo durie is also good, not biased, if a bit bland

May 25th, 2002, 09:16 PM
Mary Carillo is my pic as the best announcer but I don't think she does RG...she certainly is fair and IMHO not biased. Pam, IS!
I thought Tracy Austin did a good job at the American Open....Martina is pretty knowlegeable too...but the McEnroe's are so biased for the American players they are sickening!! Give us anybody but them!! Chrissy too is a flag waver!!

May 25th, 2002, 09:23 PM
my faves are:

Pam Shriver, Cliff Drysdale (the man is soooo clueless sometimes it's just plain funny), Tracy Austin, Martina Navratilova and Mary Carillo.

Least faves:

M.J.F= she is so pro Capriati, man you watch a match between her and Serena, Serena hits a bunch of incredible forehand winners and she doesn't compliment, but as soon as jennifer hits one, ohh the praising begins......she's not that bad but when she covers jennifer its really annoying.

John Mcenroe: just plain bad......

Maluviai Washington (or however u spell it): SO ANOOOOYING!!!! he will not shut up, I swear if you see him cover a roddick match, he just goes on and on and on and on, its like SHUT UP!!!!.

Chris Evert: Williams hater.

May 25th, 2002, 10:07 PM
Least favourites:
Pam Shriver: she doesn't pay attention to what is going on in the court, she just relates what he bias says, too biased towards American players, and annoying voice tone.

Tracy Austin: you hear her once and you heard it all, she always says exactly the same.

Patrick McEnroe: he has so little substance on all he says that I can't even criticize it :rollingeyes

Cliff Drysdale: see above

Pat Cash: undoubtedly, the most disgusting pig to ever commentate a tennis match. He obviously hates women, and his voice is soooo annoying.

Bud Collins: do I need to explain?

John McEnroe: I know he is controversial, but he does know the game and he often offers good insight on the technical aspects of it.

Mary Carrillo: she is funny and unbiased, not too technical but very perceptive of the players strenghts and weaknesses.

Virginia Wade: I guess what I like about her is that she barely says anything :p

May 25th, 2002, 11:43 PM
Favorite, John McEnroe :) Least fave, Cliff Drysdale, he's kinda boring :(

May 26th, 2002, 12:19 AM
I like Pam and Mary Joe...very knowledgeable, friendly sounding, and they are actually PRO-Williams. Remember, Pam was Venus' WTA Tour mentor a few years ago.

I also like Bill MacAtee and Mary Carillo, and also Tracy Austin.

I can't stand John McEnroe...especially his continual gushing over Andy Roddick. In fact, I know I will be yelled at for writing this, but I think Roddick is a touch, um...over-rated.

May 26th, 2002, 12:30 AM
The good ones are John McEnroe, Mary Carillo, MJF, Pam Shriver, Zina Garrison, and Martina Navratilova. The bad ones are almost everyone else. Was I really a Chris Evert fan when I was young and full of hormones? Nobody can prove it.

May 26th, 2002, 12:40 AM
Pro-Williams?? Isn't it MJ who keeps saying how the Williams sisters can't play on clay?? I think she was the one to start that silly rumor. even though Venus has won several clay court titles. She also keeps bring up how she beat Serena in 1999. Who the heck cares??? She's a sorry excuse for a professional announcer. And what did Pam S ever do for Venus???

May 26th, 2002, 12:54 AM
1) Chris Evert
2) Cliff Drysdale
3) Pam Shriver (although she is SOOO pro Serena, I still think she has interesting things to say and is not boring like a lot of them)

1) Mary Jo Fernandez (like her best with Pam Shriver)
2) Mali Vai Washington
3) Pat McEnroe

Bad Bad Bad:
1) Mary Carillo
2) Bill McAtee
(these two have the most BORING coverage and I still wonder why they have them as commentators. Mary Carillo sounds like a man and never has anything interesting to say.. and Bill McAtee is just clueless.. I will never understand why they choose them to be the commentators for a lot of finals matches)

May 26th, 2002, 01:07 AM
I don't think MJF ever said Serena can't play on clay, just that she hadn't played a lot on clay. As for Pam, she was one of the first pros to acknowledge the certain talent of both Williams sisters. She wrote an article in Tennis Magazine once about how she though the sisters were the real deal. This was back in 1994-95.

And as for the Carillo comment, only one response:

nonsense! virginia wade has a reputation for whining along and never shutting up. her analysis is good and she is unbiased, but she doesn't know when to stop sometimes...........

May 26th, 2002, 02:29 AM
Just to clarify, Pam Shriver is very pro-Williams, but she also quick to point out their strengths and weaknesses. Mary Jo is NOT. So during their broadcasts they tend to balance each other out.

Drysdale is starting to grow on me. Watching him and PMac, used to annoy the hell out of me, but since Pat hasn't been around, I think that it's him and his sexist, stuffy attitude that was annoying. Cliff just tends to blend in with whoever is his broadcasting partner.

Carillo can be funny and insightful sometimes, but she's beginning to sound like a broken record with her "hit the ball down the center of the court" strategy vs. the Williams.

love Martina N. and Pam, they are my faves.
also thumbs up to Ernie Johnson (hope he does Wimby again this year :).

Absolute worst is Jim Courier and Marv Albert!

May 26th, 2002, 02:31 AM
Better watch what you say about Marv Albert, Moon. Those comments may come back to bite you in the ass.

May 26th, 2002, 02:40 AM
I like Bud Collins, John McEnroe, Mary Jo and Chris Evert due to thier knowledge of the game though Mac can be sexist as all hell and Mary Jo does seem to be a bit too infatuatied with Jen at times. And I am a big Jen Fan myself!

Least favorite is Pam Shriver. She is so Venus/Serena! Every other word is a Williams plug! There was a time I swore up and down she was having an orgasim everytime Venus stepped out on the court!

May 26th, 2002, 02:46 AM
LOL @ disposeablehero!! That was why Martina didn't want to commentate with him!

Faves: Martina (but of course), Pam, Mary, Virginia. Jana Novotna is also pretty good. I also liked Gerry Williams when he used to commentate on the BBC back in the day - I think he's on Sky Sports now??? Another was Judy Dalton, former Wimbledon finalist, I heard her on the BBC radio a couple of years ago and she was very good. I also liked Pat Sumerall - he was a legend.

Good to average: Tracy, Cliff, Ann Jones, Betsy Nagelsen, Zina, Mary Joe, Vijay Amritraj (of Star Sports Asia), Rennae Stubbs, D.Enberg, B.McAtee, Tony Trabert, P.McEnroe, Luke Jensen, Jim Courier (when he's not gushing endlessly or writing love ballads to/about Andy Roddick)

The worst: Andrea Jaeger, hands down. No one comes close. J.McEnroe is interesting most times, but there's something about that condescending tone in his voice when he does women's matches that just rubs me the wrong way. Billie Jean King is very insightful in her analysis but can be very annoying. Chris Evert can talk some sense every now and then but it is only every now and then... Don't care much for Pat Cash or Wendy Turnbull either...

May 26th, 2002, 02:50 AM
hopefully Marv won't be doing any of the women's matches this year.

and lmao to whoever said Chris Evert knows about today's game of tennis. good one. ;)

May 26th, 2002, 02:58 AM
Jim Courier -- too weird
Cliff Drysdale -- Typical Anglo-Saxon out of the 50's
Some guy who covered Acura Classic 2001 with Tracy Austin

Tracy Austin -- love her voice
Pam Shriver -- very fair and insightful
Chrissie E -- I like hearing how it was back when she played

May 26th, 2002, 03:13 AM
Worst - definitely Christ Evert. It would take too long to list the reasons.
Best - I love Pam. She's cool, funny, and seems pretty fair. I like Martina N too.

May 26th, 2002, 03:18 AM
I like Mary Carillo, she has a very good voice for announcing. Jim Courier...I don't hate him, but he always keeps saying how we should see some male player without a shirt........

May 26th, 2002, 04:29 AM
Someone tell me Luke Jensen is not doing Roland Garros. I cannot stand him at all. He is so hyper and annoying.

My favorite is Pam Shriver. She is not always great, but generally has some good observations and is at least enjoying the match. She always cracks me up at least once per telecast. Mary Joe is not bad alongside Pam, but she does tend to stumble around for words. Cliff is not great, but tolerable. But someone PLEASE tell me Luke Jensen is not doing RG.

May 26th, 2002, 10:15 AM
I LOVE Pam Shriver!! She's so funny. Thats what i want from commentary, someone who is going to make me laugh.

Not like John "Women's tennis is shit" Barrett... ugh :(

May 26th, 2002, 11:33 AM
I had to scroll all the way down this thread to finally get to someone who had the worst announcer of all-time on their list!!!
Luke Jenson!!!

I can aprreciate everyone's point of view in terms of different tastes; but this guy really is a complete FOOL. Trying to hard to make a name for himself. And unfortunately JC Fan, since ESPN has taken over the French Open from the USA network...we are in trouble I think. They may have him courtside or doing those little stupid spots!!!

BTW, MJF was always boring to me but didn't realize she was a Williams basher? I will listen more closely next time. I also like Jonny Mac's suprb insight and delivery even though everyone is right...he drools over Americans and is a little Chauvinistic! Chrissy and Tracy are my favorite women but hardly get to hear them. And yes, Marv and Jim should look elsewhere...Jim could maybe be a coach instead. BJK and Martina have an agenda...don't want to hear it!

John Inverdale
May 26th, 2002, 11:41 AM

me! i love anna k!! future wimbledon champ on our hands

May 26th, 2002, 11:45 AM
My favourites are Pam Shriver- she's just so funny :D and I also like Virginia Wade and Jana Navotna.

The worst have to be Sue Barker, John Lloyd, Chris Bailey.. basically all the British ones as they are all biased towards Tim Henman to the point there is no point watch the tennis as all your'e going to see is them babbleing on about Tim :(

May 26th, 2002, 12:01 PM

May 26th, 2002, 12:26 PM
Good Commentators.

Virginia Wade- Insightful and respectful of a players game.

Mary Carillo- Witty, yet insightful with an obvious love of
the game still with her all these years.

Bud Collins- He's seen it all.

David Mercer- Insightful, smart, doesn't say smug remarks,
knows both WTA&ATP players.

Fred Stolle- Insightful, understands strategy, knows the
women's game and makes an effort to know about each
players game.

John Newcombe- Insightful. Makes intelligent comments about
all players not just the ones from his home country. (Australia)

Martina N- Funny, spontaneous, knows the players.

Tony Trabert- Insightful and resepects even the no name
qualifiers when commentating on matches.

Frew McMillan- Sarcastic;but funny. Still cares about the
game enough to know all about a player he's commenting on.

Pat McEnroe- Disrespectful to any underdog. Talks too much about
Roddick/Agassi/Sampras. Ridicules non-American players.

John McEnroe- Talks way to much about himself.

Pam Shriver- Totally biased in every match she comments on.
Only likes American players or friends.

VJ Amitraj- Only talks about Sampras and Henman. Knows nothings
about women's tennis.

Pat Cash- Only cares about the players he coached or coaches.
Hates women's tennis.

Luke Jensen- When did speaking like Sean Penn as "Spicoli" from
the film "Fast Times in Ridgemount High" become cool during
tennis events?

Mal Washington- Only blabs about how a match is played in
relation to how he would play it or played it in his career.

Gerry Williams- Sounds like an effeminate old man who never learned
that there are countries involved in tennis outside of the
CommonWealth nations. Way too old school.

May 26th, 2002, 04:50 PM
In defense of Luke Jensen. He has gotten better. I remember hearing him a couple of years ago at Wimbledon and he was pure crap. He said the words "smash and crash" about 50 times during one match. My eyes were rolling in the back of my head by the time it was over.

I watch some of his commentary over the past few weeks and he actually had intelligent and (gasp!) insightful things to say. So I don't think he's so bad anymore.

also, I don't think MJF is a Williams-basher but IMO she just never gives them credit for anything. If their opponent hits one winner against them, then it's the point of the match. Still, I would take MJF over Chrissy any day of the week.

May 26th, 2002, 04:56 PM
heinz gunthardt, but we all know his love Martina isn't here but man he is so annoying and he has something against Amelie:(

May 26th, 2002, 05:00 PM
Marv Albert:eek:
John Tesh:eek:
Bud Colins---because of his outfits!;)
Mal Washington---Shut up...just for a second dude!;)
John McEnroe--zip it buddy!
Patrick McEnroe---just plain boring!
Chris Evert--I must say...I usually cheer for the person she is trashing!
Mary Carillo is the best----I just love it when she cracks on John McEnroe. She is indeed witty!:D

May 26th, 2002, 05:07 PM
I swear Jana Novotna's a robot. I cant stand her boring, one-tone voice.

May 26th, 2002, 05:11 PM
Good point! Luke did have some better things to say these past few weeks... but I just can't get over his delivery! I never questioned his knowledge of the sport...just the way he comes across.

And whoever made reference to the fact that he thought sounding like Spicoli on Fast times at Ridgemont High was cool is right on the money! LMAO. Although, I wonder how many fans remember that movie; it is quite "American".

May 26th, 2002, 05:27 PM
Jensen shouts all the time...I wonder if they can shut him up during the commercials.
Biased or not, Mary Carillo is excellent. Pam Shriver is also very knowledgable and they are both often funny and entertaining.
The females also appear to know much more about the men's game than do the men about the women's.
Jimmy Arias seems to know waht he is talking about and doesn't shout!.
BTW, on a slightly different topic.. are top women umpires ever going to do high profile or for that matter, low profile men's matches?

May 26th, 2002, 05:37 PM
Looks like Mary Carrillo has lots of fans. I think she's an airhead, with her stupid line that opposing players should "serve into the body of the Williams sisters. Make them get out of their own way!!"

What in blazes does that mean?? BTW, when did John Tesh do tennis?? I thought he fawned over gymnastics exclusively.

May 26th, 2002, 06:36 PM
Oh I forgot about Luke Jennesen. He is actually very annoying. I was watching him do commentary for the Men's matches in Hamburg. Ok he laughed at Venus for hurting her hand by picking up her bag, and he actually laughed at Martina being hurt. Sick!!

May 27th, 2002, 04:25 AM
I swear Jana Novotna's a robot. I cant stand her boring, one-tone voice.

I heard Jana once, and I thought she was pretty good. As for her voice, it didn't bother me. She might not have been used to commentating.

May 27th, 2002, 08:23 AM
Looks like Mary Carrillo has lots of fans. I think she's an airhead, with her stupid line that opposing players should "serve into the body of the Williams sisters. Make them get out of their own way!! What in blazes does that mean??

It means exactly what Mary says, which is serve into(or at) someone rather than away from them. Why? Because tennis balls are really hit to the side and in fornt of the body, not directly in front. Hitting a ball 'into" the body forces even quick players to get out the way so they can get to the side of the ball. It's an excellent tactic. Try next time you play and you'll see Mary's no airhead

May 27th, 2002, 08:35 AM
On Flemish TV, I like all the announcers except for Els Jacksens. She's sooooo annoying, she simply says what everyone can see.

"And now Justine will serve, the 1st serve hits the net, but she has a second serve."

"Now Justine is serving for the second time, she got a second chance since in tennis you get two serves. " :fiery:

Thank goodness it's mostly Karl Van Nieuwkercke we have to listen to. He's good, and so are Carl Maes (Kim's coach), Sabine Appelmans and Filip Dewulf.

May 27th, 2002, 08:47 AM
Funny you mentioned Bud Collins wild clothes Amanda. The first time he interviewed Pam Shriver, she jokingly told him "not until you turn off those pants! ". He was wearing some bright colored pyschedelic number:)

Biased announcers.... Hmmm. From reading a lot of replies, I'd say it tells us just as much about biased posters;)

For the record, I'll say I love Pammy. She's not afraid of a little controversy and has the best sense of humor.

Pamela Shriver

Thank you for all the people who have named me as their fav! I'm not biased at all - but you're all totally correct in my opinion!
