All's well that ends well, eh?

I thought Amy Frazier might present some fierce resistance - she's that kind of fighter! Kept clawing the break back in the first set every time Li Na went ahead, and then took the second outright after Na won the first set tie-break; but the third was all sweet for Chinese tennis fans.... Well played, Na - now I hope you get some rest before Anna Chakvetadze (or Eva Birnerova, who is putting up quite a fight in their first round tie), as she might be a tougher test still.

It seems to me that there's hardly an easy draw for anyone in WTA Grand Slams these days - most of the weaker players in the Top 100 have been pushed down and in many cases out by a huge influx of new talent in the past 18 months, and some of those newcomers are destined for the higher echelons of the Top 50 in time.... From where I'm looking, Na's draw this time was not horrendous, especially in Round One, but nor is it easy. She has the ability to battle past Anna for sure, and if she plays at her best she can surely beat Svetlana too, but Svetlana has been on strong form this year so it will be extremely difficult to vanquish her. However, if she puts up a good fight but loses it will be no disgrace and good experience; and the ranking points from reaching Round Three will be handy for the rest of the season in any case. But even reaching Round Three is no dead cert - we can only wish her the best on the day. :D

It was very interesting looking at the British bookmakers' odds for Na against Anna last night: they are pretty much as ambivalent as most of our expectations in not knowing who is going to win this one. I think they had Na at 10-11 on, and Anna at 1-1! Pretty much a dead-heat between the two. A few months ago, I seem to recall, Elena Dementieva ousted Anna and Na in rapid succession in Rounds Three and Four of a Tier I event. She defeated Na a lot more easily than Anna, who really put up a fight, and has been playing some of her best tennis over the spring; but Na has had some stronger results most recently, so by the book of recent performance it really is anyone's guess who will emerge victorious.

Na was 2-0 up at the start but Anna broke back; then I missed a few games before catching it again. I think Na was set-point down on her serve but managed to escape and levelled the match again. Then there was a short rain break.

The short rain break turned out to be quite long! But back on court again, Na broke Anna to snatch the first set 7-5. A useful start there....

Going with serve again in Set 2 currently. Na will have to fight all the way here unless Anna tires suddenly.

Na just saved a break point at 3-3 on her own serve, then closed out the game to go 4-3 up, still with service.

The match statistics make for very interesting viewing here. Both players are keeping up a very high rate of first serves in court, with Na's statistic for the match being 79% and Anna's 73%, though both players were slightly better in the first set in this respect.

The key difference between the play in the two sets seems to be that the percentage of points actually won on service by both players has gone up dramatically in Set Two, both players winning no more than 25% of their receiving points in the first six games of the second set.

Having said that, Na just bucked the trend by breaking Anna for 5-3 and will serve for the match. Good luck, Na!

Na wins the game, set and match! Excellent performance over a very tough opponent. Well done!

Presuming that she loses to Svetlana in Round Three, Na will (as far as I can work out from online references) take home 62 ranking points (with none to defend), which should elevate her from 543.75 to 605.75 points. Currently that would place her 35th (up from 38th), but since Dulko (35th before this week), Castano (36th), Santangelo (37th) and Zheng (39th) were all still in the tournament after the first round and could in theory advance further than their previous year's performances, it's possible that the climb in ranking points won't be matched by an equivalent climb in ranking position, depending on falls from higher up etc. also.

Still, in reaching Round Three she has achieved the most that would reasonably be expected of her, so even if she loses to Sveta it will have been a positive, solid performance for her in this tournament, although she had a few hair-raising moments against Amy Frazier, and it should do nothing to dampen her confidence for the summer season.
