SERGIO TACCHINI Sends a Letter Before Action to Martina Hingis
Corporate Position in the Martina Hingis Case

MILAN, Italy, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- With regards to the breaking news stories reported by several international media regarding the public declarations released by Miss Martina Hingis, her mother Melanie Molitor and her doctor Mr. Heinz Buhlmann, the SERGIO TACCHINI Company makes the following warning:

Such accusations do not correspond to the truth. There is no connection between the present medical condition of Martina Hingis and the shoes she was using four years ago. SERGIO TACCHINI states to Martina Hingis, Melanie Molitor and Heinz Bulhmann that they have to cease and desist from such wrong and misleading declarations. SERGIO TACCHINI would like to draw attention to the fact that false statements made publicly and damaging news regarding the Company, the quality of its products and its reputation, may lead to civil and criminal actions.

In any case, the Company cannot refrain from pointing out that Martina Hingis became the undisputed world leader in women's tennis using SERGIO TACCHINI shoes, winning her last Grand Slam tournament wearing SERGIO TACCHINI products.

As entertaining as the back-and-forth is, I have this feeling that they'd all be better off if a judge slapped a gag order on both parties until the various suits are settled.

They are lyers. The same thing happened to Davide Sanguinetti's shoes at Del Ray Beach: They came apart! I will not wear ST ever. Good thing Martina now wears adidas.

I'm surprised Guga's feet arent knackered by Diadora shoes, a pair of diadora football boots knackered my acchilles tendon up and prevented me from going on trial to a number of football league clubs.

Hmmm...

Their math is off. Four years ago was 1998. Martina won her last slam in Jan. 1999, which is basically a little over 3 years. Sergio Tacchini can't have it both ways.

Was Martina wearing different shoes other than ST for AO '99? I know she was wearing the Tacchini black/white tennis dress, but I thought it odd that ST only mentions " ST products" when referring to Mart's last GS win.

Good for Sergio Tacchini. Melenie Molitor has made one tacky statement after another. Funny how fate works out after she said that Steffi's body was "physically spent." Who's body is physically spent now Meleanie?

Not surprising coming from a Williams' fan
Yeah fate could work against Venus, isn't she injury prone herself?

Yes, I believe she did. I remember that controversy back then too. I think Martina stopped wearing ST shoes even earlier than that (late '98) but I could be wrong.

And Venus fans are accused of turning all the boards into Venus boards? This is about Hingis, NOT Venus, but if you want to talk about Venus, neither Williams parent ever made any silly comments about Steffi being physically spent. Also if Venus did have to retire, she would never blame her shoes!

I guess she will never blame her shoes unless the shoes are the cause  what a stupid statement to make.

Also, what do Martina's comments on Steffi have to do with anything?

I guess Anton will win the most stupid comments reward

Who is Mellenie?

No, that award goes to Bad Hair Mom.
Also yesterday I watched the Amelia Island Final where Venus beat Justine!!! I got it in the mail!! Wasnt that a great match? Too bad Justine' game fell apart.

Sergio has a strong case against the Hingis camp. She broke the contract with the CLOTHING COMPANY without showing 100% positive proof that ST shoes are the cause of her feet/ankle/hip injuries.

Anton my friend, you are not smart enough to upset me.

Do you really think that by bringing up how a player (not you) beat another player (not me)? adds anything to the discussion? Does it make your other comments "smarter"? I don't think so. Typical of a weak mind is to try to upset the other part with unrelated issues when you don't have a proper answer

Your ability to constantly miss the point really surprises me.

I really hope for your own sake you are good looking, with that brain you won't get anywhere :p

Last week Jon Wertheim's comment about that affair:

"The Hingis camp claims that her injury is owed to her wearing defective shoes made by Sergio Tacchini -- she and the company have long been at loggerheads and have a $40 million suit and countersuit pending. I'm on the NBA beat this week and asked an NBA team trainer -- who's not, I hasten to point out, a physician -- whether he had ever heard of an athlete suffering a serious foot or leg injury because of ill-fitting shoes.

His response: "No, but I suppose it's possible. My question is: Why didn't she just stop wearing the shoes?"

Me: "She did stop wearing them. More than two years ago."

Trainer: "Let me get this straight: She kept playing for all those years and stayed at No. 1 and only now is saying that the old shoes wrecked her foot? That's ridiculous!" Make of that what you will. ... "

Make of that what you will indeed! GO SERENA, JEN & VENUS!!!

Unless you can explain why calling Molitor "bad hair mom" is necessary to discussing her statements, or what Venus beating Justine has to do with the issue at hand, I wouldn't go calling the admins.

Both sides should take the side-bar offline.

Anyway - the problem with Hingis' case (legally, that is) is not only proving that ST shoes gave her problems, but that HER OWN ACTIONS didn't contribute to them. Even if ST's shoes are found "guilty" if they can show that her own training or playing schedule contributed to her injuries, Hingis would have a hard time winning a judgement.

But trying this in the court of public opionion with claims and counter-claims is going to hurt them both in the long run.

griffin,
I'm just going to ignore people that will remain nameless from now on. I guess I could namecall back and say Fingon is such a rotten loser, but somebody has to show some maturity.

ahem...and you're doing a splendid job. btw, i would hardly call running and tattling to the admins about something so irrelevant, mature.

anyway - i don't really know how i feel re: the issue at hand but i tend to agree with Griffin about the legality. I'm not sure if Hingis can win this one.

If namecalling is allowed, it could ruin this board just like it ruined the WTAtour board. That is the point I was trying to make. I don't think that is irrelevant.

What a ignorant, small-minded statement.

But back to the subject of the thread, the statement says that she wore ST products not shoes at her last grand slam. Does ST produce something besides shoes?

This is an interesting case. Martina's camp have to prove beyond REASONABLE doubt that the shoes were the culprit, and she will have a hard time explaining how she wore them for so long, with so much success. "In your opinion, when did the quality of the shoes sent to you by ST start to deteriorate?" This are roughly some of the questions that will be asked.

As for issuing statements back and forth, ST had to won Martina. They are a business and all this talk has to be stopped. They could also have gone to court because without actual prove, Martina and Co are hurting their business or have potential to do so.

Actually, they can counter-sue Martina. That would take the case into lengthy litigation.

Look for an out of court settlement. Nobody wins.

I too think this will be settled out of court. Sergio Tacchini won't be able to handle the bad press, and both sides will have their own doctors and medical experts. It will be difficult for Martina to prove 100% that those infamous shoes caused the numerous foot and ankle problems she had for the past 3 1/2 years.

On the www.hingis.org site, a poster named Sinjoor60 listed 13 WTA players, most from the top 15, and listed their clothing sponsers. The only player listed who wears ST clothes is Silvia Farina Elia( an Italian ), but according to this posters research, Silvia does not wear Tacchini shoes.

Isn't that interesting?
