View Full Version : 10 years ago...Navratilova on Monica

I was just looking through my tennis books and I have a report from the Virginia Slims Championships final in 1992 and first is Navratilova on Monica and then Monica's reply:

'Had she played like this 10 years ago when I was dominating she would have beaten me. At her best she's as good as anybody I've played in 20 years.'

Monica's reply to that:
'It's a nice thing for her to say, but I do hope this is not the height of my career yet because I still feel that I have a lot of things to learn. I think I need three to four years more practice to feel comfortable playing a match'

I am sure many people have read and remember those comments but I thought this would be nice to post before Roland Garros to remind some people of the kind of player Monica is, she should never be under-estimated.

I also feel sad reading Monica's comment with what happened about 4 and a half months later, but the point of me posting what she said is to show the kind of person she is.

And I have just seen Monica beat Suarez now in Madrid and she will go into Roland Garros as one of the favourites, never under-estimate a 3 time former champion.

Nice post Babsi. I think we'll never know what kind of player Monica could have become. It's incredible that she was 19 when she was stabbed, the same age as Kim and Jelena are now, younger than Justine or Serena.

Thanks for posting this, babsi :)

Babsi, did you actually see the Seles-Suarez match or just the result? If you did, how was it?

No, no I was following on the tenispain.com website, i was just glad there were some live scores:)

Some Monica fans will disagree with me on this but if Monica wins tomorrow of course I will be happy she has won a title but it will not mean much as it is only a tier 3, it's the level of the tournament, not her. Now if she wins Roland Garros 2 weeks tomorrow that will be something to celebrate about.

Monica dominated the tour, was clearly number 1 and what does she say that she doesn't feel comfortable in being the player she is, lol that's rather arrogant and denigrating for the rest of the tour(and probarly bad news for them too) but she was number 1 so she needed that attitude, I don't critisize it because she probarly wanted to be perfect there is nothing wrong with that, I think she lost that in april 93 and that's sad and she never got it back and I am sure that's what she is missing these days in her matches

Irma I understand what you're saying, but "I have a lot left to learn" is not a particularly arrogant thing to say! LOL!

I have just read on rolandgarros.com that Monica may be considering retirement after Roland Garros! I am sure this is not tru, all she said is that at 28 years of age she does not want to look too far into the future!!! I think she has a good draw next week, what do you guys think?

but she won already almost everything, what was her goal beating everybody 6:0 6:0?(I mean she dominated already so if she had improved a lot except when steffi(who said the same thing, I admit that, nope she said clear she wanted to be perfect) had done the same the chances she had beaten everybody 6:0 6:0 were in the air or did she wanted to switch to the atp and beat andre like she already wanted at 14(that's from my favourite monica article), damn we all were stolen from a lot

Well, as some of your fellow Graf fans are fond of pointing out on the CNN board she actually had a few more losses per year than Graf or Navratilova at their height. She dominated in a lot of matches, but she struggled in a few also. She certainly could have improved on her score in the 92 Wimbledon final. Maybe that's what she was thinking of. ;)

Monica has always been very sweet and gracious. I think she's still a favorite at any slam, especially the Australian and Roland Garros. I hope Monica does really well :)
