i know its a bit early and there may even be some doubt about whether maria will play or not, but seen as though its only a week to go (time flew by!) i thought id start up the draw. i hope maria does well at this years french and id be satisfied with a quater final run, and anything after that would be great(considering shes had no match practice on the red stuff). all i can say is good luck and all your fans here on wta world wish you the best of luck in you participating at RG and going as far as you can. good luck masha and remember...
lets go masha!!!
LETS GO!!!

also this isnt really related but some guy in england has put £30,000 on maria winning wimby at odds to 3-1, so if he wins hes looking at £120,000!!! due to this bet placement the bookies have now put marias odds at 2-1!!! so thats good news unless your a gambler that is! but surley it brings some optimism to the year, and somone out there who must know a lot about tennis or has sought proffesional advice to place a bet on. its great news for us masha fans but i hope maria doesnt here this as it might put a tiny bit of pressure on her!

Right now I would be pleased if Maria just turns up at RG and is healthy, anything more than that will be a bonus.

Maria will be lucky to make 3rd round if she does turn up after being out for so long, its her worst surface as we all know and she's mad no match practice.

Maria will be lucky to make 3rd round if she does turn up after being out for so long, its her worst surface as we all know and she's mad no match practice. But a lot of the top players seem to be battling injuries or not playing their best right now. If Maria's foot is completely healed by RG she has a good shot of making it to the QF's. If she got beyond that it would be a big surprise (a pleasant one though of course :D )

I really just want to see her play, even if she doesnt play all that good its just been so long. Hopefully (with my fingers crossed) her foot will be OK. Getting thru a few rounds would be a victory. Good luck with your health Masha

In all fairness the only reason why I want Maria to turn up to Roland Garros is so that I can see her play, I'm not to fussed I just want her to be ready as best as she can for Wimby!

msharafan

dont know she could probably pullout the day before, but if she knows shes not playing, then shell probably pull out before the draw is made on friday morning.

Maria Croft
May 24th, 2006, 09:02 PM
From one side I would be crushed if she missed Roland Garros, it's a grand slam and I would like to see her play again.
But from the other side I want her to be healthy, not just for the grass season, but also for the summer hardcourt season where she can pick up many points, if that means missing Roland Garros so be it, I would rather have her ready and healthy for Roland Garros if it’s possible of course.

thanks. well guys todays the day before the draw so if maria is pulling out well probably hear it by today. she might wait and see what the draws like, ie if she gets a really tough one with really hard first and second round matches she might pull out as she wont want to lose first or second round. but if she is lucky and gets a very good draw she might give it a go. id say shes lacking in confidence a lot with no match practice on clay, and if she couldnt play istanbul this week, i dont think shell be able to play next week. but who knows maybe im wrong! and i hope i am. but normlly wer flooded with pics of maria practising or travelling or whatever, but everythings been quite as of late. maybe she want some peace and quiet to try and prepare as best she can before RG. anyway fingers crossed everyone that maria will play, cause not only will i miss the tennis, but i was looking forward to seeing the lovely pink and yellow dress!!!

it was on the gm thread this morning, i dont know how to do links, but the threads on the second page on gm, the thread is called no news on sharapova or somthing like that you should find it ok! i hope this helps, anyway im expecting a few pics off nouf tommorow, im under no promises but apparently maria was supposed to be practising today so we might get lucky with a few snap shots, if were lucky! anyway the draws out tommorow im so excited but nervous too!!! i really want maria to do well at RG but i suppose i cant expect too much of maria on clay, not that i dont think shes great but has had no match practise as of late. im really worried shell get a really tough draw but hopfully im wrong, when maria got to the quaters last year was she playing well just in general, cause losing to justine on clay is no mean feat even if maria was playing well?

bellascarlett
May 25th, 2006, 05:41 PM
thanks! and yes i also hope we get training pix soon. can't wait for those and the draw to be made. just hope she doesnt get hingis and justine in her draw. yikes....but with her luck, watch those happen...haha...anyway, i guess the most important thing is for her to be completely healthy especially for that foot to have already healed well. I don't want any injuries before the grass season.

Maria practiced in public at the AO in 2005 but didnt this year. I think it might have had something do to with the fact she didnt train at all between matches this year....having said that I do think at times they avoid it. When you look at some of the things the photographers get up to I hardly blame her, especially in England  also Masha was said to have at least 1 serious stalker who would have found Birmingham the easiest place to cause trouble.

Dan23
May 26th, 2006, 12:08 AM

May 26th, 2006, 07:30 AM
id say shes ok now that shes turned up shell probably play, but she also turned up at rome, aw well rome wasnt a grand slam, but even so i think shell play, we would have heard if she was pulling out already because theyre making the draw in 1 and 1/2 hours! i cant wait, but i bet maria will get a tough draw with martina in the fourth round and if she gets past her venus! but hopfully im wrong!

Dan23
May 26th, 2006, 08:14 AM
hey Andrew or Nick could you plz SMS me the draw when its out ....I wont be back on here probably till tomorrow night or something :o :p

msharafan

draws out, maria got safina 4th round and kutzy in the quater finals, on the top of her half are venus and amelie, so if maria could get past safina and kutzy she will get to have a go at venus or amelie but these 2 could easily do badly, and then the draw might open up!

Maria Croft
May 26th, 2006, 10:04 AM
I'm very happy with this draw, I really wanted a good 1st round match, and I got my wish :D

If Maria is healthy she should be able to reach the 4th round to meet Safina, that would be a very tough match, but I'm sure she would be able to win that one if she would get that far, and if she gets in the QF.....I would already be more then happy so I don't care what happens after that lol

what about safina she got to the final of rome last week beating kutzy! but i suppose if maria beats safina shell have confidence playing kutznetsova and if she gets past that, it will probably be amelie or venus, but amelie could falter under the pressure earlier on and venus might be too inconsistent well lets hope so, cause if maria plays well she could possibly even make the final, but maybe not too, well have to wait and see, one match at a time maria one match at a time! but maria will probably be playing on sunday now too, so not too long to wait!!!

Well i must say this will be a great draw to ease her into the tournament. Her first round will give her a good hitting match and hopefully really help tp groove her groundstrokes. she should have to much trouble untill the third round where you would think Lucie would really be a tough test as will Dinara in the 4th round but if Masha can build her form thoughout the tournament she can do very well. Good luck Masha

bellascarlett

Well at least I could say I got my wish...no Justine and Hingis in her half. but then Mary withdrew so she got sveta and has dinara in 4th but who knows she could have gotten hingis had mary not withdrawn. oh well, but altogether it's a good draw for her. she needs those tough doable matches early on if she's plans to make it far.

my question is, how doable is the potential match against safarova? safina will be tough but maria can win if she plays well and is mentally strong all throughout. the rest she'll have to play really really well period.

Hmmmm. Not a cake-walk draw by any means. There are some tough characters in there though, Safina and Kuznetsova have been playing well above their ranking, and Molik is in there too! Maria will need to be on the ball!

That doesn't sound too promising... I hope Maria is able to play and get through whatever matches she plays in one piece...too bad she isn't 100% because the draw is pretty friendly untill 4th round.

RG is a hugely important tournament and shouldn't be disregarded just because it's played on Maria's least favourite surface, Wimbledon isn't the be all and end all.

yeah i agree i mean as much as i want maria to win i dont think she will venus will most likely defend her title, but she mightened but im not pinning all my hopes on one tournie that way i wont be so dissapointed and believe me last year i was gutted when maria lost i ran upstairs went into my room and cried for about 1 hour! so ive learnt my lesson dont expect maria to win wimby or you might be in for a let down. well thats just the impression im getting from this maria fan thread i mean wimby isnt everything and RG is not nothing, at the end of the day they are both grand slams!

Maria Sharapova, twice a quarter-finalist here, does not think she will be offering much of a threat in 2006. Her father, Yuri, looked particularly depressed yesterday as he discussed the latest MRI scans on his daugher’s damaged ankle. "Hopefully, with a few miracles, things can get better and I can play," she said. "I’ve been working, training, doing a lot of therapy. It’s been pretty boring these past few weeks."

:tape: :tape:

That's just the same stuff from the Roland Garros site, they just 'added' the Yuri stuff and changed some lines to make it sound different :tape:

Still, if she isn't ready to play she shouldn't even try, I mean, why bother?!

I know - I can't believe Maria would play (and her dad and entourage) would WANT her to play, if her foot is anything but 100%. It would be insane to risk further injuring it.

i just hope the media re making it sound worse than it is i mean when does yuri have a smile on his face apart from when maria is playing? eh never so we could be a little optimistic i hope, maria gives it a try but only if she feels she is able to and wont risk further injury. lets all hope shes ok and can play, i mean look at the aussie open situation this year and she did great to get to the semis, but i have a feeling that this injury is a little more serious!

FROM ROLAND GARROS - Maria Sharapova re-injured her right ankle in practice on Friday at Roland Garros, went to the doctor and after three hours got the good news – no fracture. The very bad news is that despite requesting a Monday start, she was denied and now is scheduled to face Mashona Washington later on Sunday on Suzanne Lenglen. She’s not happy about it and there’s still a chance that she won’t play. Even if she does, she’s going to have a hard time moving and could have used another day to heal. The tournament is taking a huge risk here by asking one of the tour’s top draws to play hurt, as Washington could counterpunch her out in the first round. But its clear that the French Tennis Federation wants to put on a very good show on its inaugural “First Sunday” of this now 15 day event.

Well we will find out soon enough I dont think she will even play or if she does start i feel she will retire from the match. She has just had such terrible luck with her body the last few years. I hoping that maybe its maybe not quite as bad as what has been reported in the media.

this is from RG site on the preview of tommorows matches, so probably a bit biased and as the french would like to see it!

Sharapova's Roland Garros begins Sunday against Mashona Washington, a 30-year-old American who has been in only one clay court main draw this year (lost in first round of Amelia Island; failed to qualify for Charleston, and Rome). While she has never professed love for clay, Sharapova thinks she is improving on the surface.

"Last year especially I didn't feel like I was strong enough physically," she explains. "Definitely a year has passed by and I definitely feel a lot stronger physically. I think that will obviously help me."

this was probably done before maria asked for the request or reinjured herself, i mean how can she be physically better if she nearly fractured her ankle!

Sharapova not 100%
Maria Sharapova did not start the French Open with high expectations. The Russian, who has been out for two weeks with an ankle injury still does not believe she is 100% fit. "I do not think I will be able to perform as well as I would like. I have not played a tournament before coming here and I have not trained very much. I am hoping for a few miracles. I will take each day as it comes and see what happens," said the world number 4.

Sorry, my imagination is working overdrive today. I just can't see Maria or her team letting her play if she's nowhere near 100%.

xan
May 28th, 2006, 01:03 PM
She said she's "not 100%", which is different from "not nearly 100%", so I'm hoping she's in a state where she will play decently. I don't think they'd let her play if she had no chance at all.

Washington kept the No. 4-seeded Sharapova on the run with shots into the corners and reached her first match point at 5-3. Sharapova calmly erased it with a forehand winner.

Washington held two more match points serving at 5-4, but lost the first with a backhand long, then lost her last one when Sharapova whacked another forehand winner.

"I played well," Washington said. "I just wasn't able to get the last point."

Beginning with the last match point she saved, Sharapova won 15 of the final 19 points. When she hit a running backhand winner to reach match point, she twirled and punched the air.

Washington then sailed a backhand wide, and a relieved Sharapova tapped her chest with her fist as she walked to the net.

"I'm a competitor, and that's why I play the sport," Sharapova said. "That's why I'm here." :worship:

I would also like to add that why is it that Maria always seems to bring out the best in players?!

It's so damn frustrating to watch her opponents play unbelievable tennis, hit winners left and right out of the blue, totally in the zone, does make the victory even more sweeter though lol

Hmmm...There was one comment about Anna Kournikova I heard once that I feel can be related to this (at least it's a theory I believe possible as well in Maria's case). I cant remember now when and where and from who I heard it - I tend to think it was a top player Anna competed against - but anyway...she said that players weve more motivated to beat Kournikova. They didnt want to lose to the so called "Pretty Girl" or "It Girl" and that beating her was in a way stripping her of whatever talent she was seen to have and that it was sort of like a message that proved her beauty and popularity worthless.......something to that effect...and I've always thought this to apply to Maria as well in some situations. You just know players are more motivated to beat the darling of the WTA. It's hard to explain but I think it makes sense. ;)

I was yelling and screaming COME ONs with her all the way thru the last fews games i was dying on my chair it had so much tension and nerves. It was just awesome to watch, she really showed us why she is the great champ she has become, her fight and spirit was just terrific to see and to have back on the tour. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS- did wnyone alse notice that her serve looks a little different ?

Edward.

Maybe she has modified it a little so she's not putting as much strain on her foot?

bellascarlett
May 29th, 2006, 01:25 AM
She is a born champion which is why I all the more hate these nagging injuries...imagine what she could do this year without her being bothered by them....or even what she could have done this season without them...:o...her injuries are really hindering her development and progress as a champion tennis player somewhat. I know all champions have had to deal with injuries one way or another and that more of that champion's aura and character shine through during difficult times but still... she's already had to deal with more than enough last season. I hope her ankle injury heals completely soon and that she doesnt injure herself anymore in a way that could hamper her chances of achieving her destiny as a great tennis champion. She has all the characteristics of one really.

May 29th, 2006, 02:04 AM
Yea I think her serve was just changed to help her ankle. She had no forward thrust off her right leg like she usually does and in the 2nd set she was basically serving off the ground....seems the restrapping helped that a bit in the 3rd.

It was great to see the old fighting spirit back from Maria, in some of her loses more recent I was starting to wonder where it was but she's back now

May 29th, 2006, 12:27 PM
Yeah I noticed right away that her serve motion is a little different, we should all just be glad she didn't injure her ankle that she lands on when serving, because then she really wouldn't be able to serve well, but I think she served pretty well, she's just more vulnerable now in her serve games now.

I saw the third set today, Maria was hitting really hard, looking much better than I expected her to.

Benesova's in shitty form. :yeah:

you mean why woman's tennis is more popular in the Netherlands?
maybe because of Misa? I doubt that though, we've had good coverage for quite some years now, before Misa.
I guess we Dutch people just know that the WTA tour is more exciting  :p

Myskina was just on Eurosport saying that she had tough matches because everybody went all out to beat a Slam Champion.

It's annoying when it happens to Maria so much, and nonentities suddenly play the match of their lives against her.

Anyway, amazing win Maria.

Oh. Yes. Eurosport commentators and some of the newspapers were saying how annoyed Maria was that RG forced her to play on the Sunday, even though she told them her injury had been aggravated. They really should show more consideration for the players.

Hoping Maria's ankle has time to recover and is good for her next match!

Andy.
May 30th, 2006, 02:13 PM
In a way the Sunday start was not such a bad thing as long as she got thru it which she did, she has an extra days rest that way and hopefully her ankle is a little better. Safarova is gone so that opens up her draw a little.
