an article from Przegląd Sportowy

Fights in Paris, thinks about London

“For the last time I’m playing in a junior Grand Slam tournament. So I can’t say, like before J&S Cup, that I’ll be happy winning a match. I want to take the main trophy” – announces Agnieszka Radwańska. On Sunday she defeated Mexican Valeria Pulido Velasco 6:0 6:4.
“You shouldn’t look at girls ranks” – says the hope of Polish tennis – “There are many great French players, who perfectly know the venue, feel the surface, but are lower ranked. I’m happy that at last I can play and train on normal courts. In Istanbul, where I played recently, there was terrible surface.”
Agnieszka already thinks about her next senior tournaments. Robert Radwański, her father and coach, believes in Wimbledon main draw wild card. – “My daughter is so high ranked in WTA that she guaranteed herself what she was promised. In my opinion, “Isia” deserves something more! Besides, Brits don’t have good wild cards candidates. Later they are ashamed of some players” – thinks the coach of the last year’s juniors Wimbledon champion.
And he is right: if the Wimbledon organizers want to save a clean slate, they should give a chance to the young Pole.
In coming weeks Agnieszka will cheer for her younger sister. 15 year old Urszula fights for ranking points to be able to travel with family and have the same tournaments calendar. Their father can’t be in other places in one time of course...

Radwanska rolls to the semis of Junior Roland Garros

2nd seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland moved t the semifinal of Junior Roland Garros after defeating Alexandra Panova of Russia 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal match in Paris.
The 17-year old Pole took early 3-1 lead over Panova in the opening set, extended it to 5-2 saving break point, but got little deconcentrated when was serving for the first set. Panova broke Radwanska's serve but couldn't hold her service game when Radwanksa just broke back streight after and finished off the first set 6-4 after 35 minutes of play.
Second set, ranked 206 in the world Radwanska had totaslly under control. Broke Panova's service twice at 1-0 and then at 3-1. Finished off the match on her own service withs 6-1 score after 30 minutes of play.
Radwanska served 3 aces today, had 22 unforced errors when Panova made 48, what was the biggest factor today. The young Pole had 100% effectiveness on break points, had 4 and took them all.
With this win Agnieszka booked place in the semifinal where she will face either Katerina Vankova of Czech Republic or France's 13th seeded Youlia Fedossova.

Bester battles into Roland Garros final

Russia’s Australian Open champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will take on last year’s Wimbledon winner Agnieszka Radwanska in the girls' final.

Pavlyuchenkova, meanwhile, said she was looking forward to her battle of the grand slam champions against Radwanska. “I am so happy but I cannot think about that now, about how perfect it is because it’s not enough – I need to do more,” she said. “I cannot think about Australia either, because winning there doesn’t mean I will win here too. I just have to try to do well. She is good on clay, she dropshots well, she mixes it up and it will not be an easy match.”

Pavlyuchenkova is being coached by her brother Alexander and says that he is responsible for helping her improve this year. “It’s definitely my brother but it’s also that I am older and so I have got better,” she said. “It’s always about what is in your head and he understands me. He can tell me little things because he knows me so well and he knows how I’m feeling and what to say to me.”

“For me she is favourite because she is top seed and she won the Australian Open but it’s hard to choose between us. It’s pretty even,” said Radwanska, who beat unseeded Czech Katerina Vankova 6-2, 6-1.

Radwanska will be watched by her father Robert Radwanski, who is also her coach – providing, that is, that he can bear the suspense. “Sometimes he gets to nervous and has to go and watch on TV,” she said, with a laugh. “It’s not easy for him.”

Ranwanska and Pavlyuchenkova will also face off tomorrow in the girls doubles final. Radwanska will team with Denmark's Caroline Wazniacki to take on Australian Open girls doubles champions Pavlyuchenkova and Canada's Sharon Fichman.

Radwanska reigns at Roland Garros

Agnieszka Radwanska’s 6-4, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova earned the 17-year old from Krakow her second junior major title following her triumph at last year’s Wimbledon.

Radwanska’s win was equally one-sided and even she was surprised at how one-sided her victory over the 15-year-old Russian been.

“I'm so happy because I think it's my last tournament in juniors, so I think the best,” she said. “I'm so happy I won that tournament. Wimbledon was different because last year was my first tournament, so it was very big surprise for everyone in Poland and everywhere. This tournament was like very good also, but, you know, not as much of a surprise. There was more pressure.”

Afterwards, Radwanska paid tribute to Pavlyuchenkova, who is the Australian Open junior champion and was top seed in Paris. “She was running good and I couldn't finish the ball sometimes,” said Radwanska. “She's, I think, young, so she can play much better in the future.”

Why won't Aga play junior wimby or junior US Open?

not sure she won't play there, I know there is much info about her farewell with juniors competition but I think it's sure in 95%
for example she goes to NY, plays qualies and fail to qualify, then she must wait there for her sister who plays juniors, I think she would ask for a WC to juniors competition then

Aga said if she gets a MD WC to Wimbledon she will play in juniors tournament in Halle to train on grass, if not then she will play Wimby qualies
I think she won't have a chance of playing in Halle ;)

Aga just won tournament on grass in juniors .It is a good sign before playing in Wimbledon. But don't forget that is a difference between playing juniors and seniors. She will face the higher ranking players with more experience.
I think that Aga is hungry of win and also she want to prove that LTA gave WC to right person. Aga will fight and she has got fight spirit, she has shown us that in a Warsaw.
Azarenka isn't a easy opponent , but if Aga pass her, ALG will give polish girl a more troubles, I think :p, and ALG is more dangerous then Maria K.

Wild card Radwanska collects frist career Grand Slam win over Azarenka

17-year old Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland advanced to the second round at Wimbledon. Last year Junior Wimbledon Champion Radwanska defeated Victoria Azarenka from Belarus 7-5, 6-4.

The Pole started her first senior grand slam match from being 1-4 down in the opening set, but came back after tough fight against ranked 101 in the world Azarenka. At 5-5, Radwanska hold her serve and broke again, taking first set point to close up the set 7-5 and take 1-0 lead.

In the second set, wild card Radwanska dropped opening service game and until 4-3 to Azarenka, both players kept winning their service games. In the 8th game, the Pole broke back, hold ones again and then broke Azarenka's serve to close up the match 7-5, 6-4.

"On the begin of the match I was little bit nervous" - said Radwanska. "That was my frist match in such a big tournament. When I was down 1-4, I thought I would have start playing better in the second set, but when i started coming back to the match I believed I could win this match"

"In the last game, my hand shaked little bit but I closed up the match. I haven't got any easy balls today, I had to fight for every point very hard. I felt on my racquet, it's not a junior tennis anymore. But today I played very good, I tried drop shots and lobs couple of times and everything worked well for me. I'm very happy I'm through and I hope I can play as good as today in the second round. Yes, it's a big step for me." - added Agnieszka.

In the next round, Radwanksa will face ranked 83 in the world sensational Tsvetlana Pironkova who defeated 13 seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Radwanska rolls to 3rd Round in her Senior Wimbledon debut!

Agnieszka Radwanska advenced to the 3 round today at Wimbledon defeating Tsvetlana Pironkova of Bulgaria 7-5, 7-6(5) in the finished match today after play was suspended yesterday due to darkness.

Yesterday, the match was suspended at 7-5, 5-5 lead to Radwanska. In the first set both players were winning their service games until 3-3. That was Radwanska who dropped her service game first to love, but broke straight back and tied the game at 4-4. Pironkova lost her serve again when she was serving to stay in the set, Radwanska chose her chance and closed up the set 7-5.

In the second set, the Pole was loosing 3-4 and then 4-5, but was able to break back two times before chair umpire decided to suspend the game at 5-5 due to darkness. Today, both players came back to finish the match. After both players hold their service games, tie-break had to decide wheather the third set would be needed to get know the winner or Radwanska would advence in two sets. In the tie-break Bulgarian made way too many unforced errors and 17-year old Junior Roland Garros champion booked her place in the 3rd round at Wimbledon, after Pironkova hit forehand on out at the first match point.

In the 3rd round Radwanska will face Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand who defeated today Shinobu Asagoe of Japan 6-3 7-5.

Radwanksa proved ones again, that she is already successfull on senior circuit. And, Pironkova who is at 101 spot in Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Ranking is not the highest rank player that she ever defeated. This year in Warsaw, Agnieszka defeated Anastasia Myskina in the opener and Klara Koukalova in the second round at J&S Cup.

This week, the young Pole advenced on the No.1 spot in Junior Ranking as the first polish player in history after winning Junior Roland Garrros two weeks ago. Reaching 3rd round at Wimbledon, 17-year old Agnieszka earned 62 ranking points already, and will move from current 217 to around 155 spot in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Ranking.

Radwanska Sets Sights on Clijsters

Friday, 30 June, 2006

The final ladies’ singles match of the day saw the 2005 Wimbledon girls’ champion Agnieszka Radwanska up against the 1995 junior Wimbledon runner-up, Tamarine Tanasugarn. With a lot of hard work and a slice of luck the Polish teenager won 6-3, 6-2.

After a shaky start that saw both women fail to hold their service games, the quality of play quickly improved. The Polish wild card managed to hang on to her serve and capitalised on a poor service game from the Thai late in the set, creating the chance to serve for the set. Indeed it was the junior Wimbledon champion who delivered the first blow, taking the opener 6-3.

The grass court skills of both players were a delight to watch, but the Polish teenager’s greater variety of shot made a difference. Her clever use of drop shots and her ability to keep the ball in play at all costs often caused the Thai player to rush her shots, resulting in too many unforced errors.

Radwanska kept chipping away at the qualifier, and went a break up at the start of the second set. The length of the rallies in the early evening heat eventually forced Tanasugarn to call for a trainer to treat a thigh injury.

As soon as the trainer strapped the leg up, play resumed. But Tansugarn’s leg strapping hampered her movement so much that so she removed it after conceding three points in a row. Soon the Thai’s physical agony turned into mental frustration and the Pole ran away with the match. Her reward is an encounter in the last 16 with second seed Kim Clijsters.

Clijsters Too Strong For Youngster

Monday, 3 July, 2006

Experience triumphed over youth this afternoon on Court Two, as Kim Clijsters saw off last year's Wimbledon girls' champion Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-2. Despite the defeat, the 17-year-old showed more promise than the scoreline suggested and at times stretched the number two seed with some exciting play.

That the young Pole reached the fourth round on her first appearance in a Grand Slam tournament surely merits congratulation. Ranked 217 in the world – a figure which will receive a huge boost when the new rankings are released next Monday – Radwanska made her Tour debut barely two months ago, in Warsaw, where she beat the 2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina en route to the third round. Here at Wimbledon she was only the fifth wildcard ever to progress to the last 16, and she did it without so much as dropping a set.

While it was unsurprising that such a statistic could not be maintained into today's match, Radwanska had her chances. From the very opening point she signaled her intent with a marathon baseline rally of 18 strokes, which ended only when she ran out of steam. But she was also making unnecessary mistakes, most likely through understandable nervousness, although the noise around Court Two might have had something to do with it. She dropped her opening serve, and compounded the loss to give Clijsters a 4-1 lead.

Yet her play was not without assurance, as she stole a handful of break points throughout their encounter, two of which came when Clijsters was serving for the set. But crucially the 23-year-old's experience told, and Radwanska could not make the breakthrough.

Today's second set was almost over before it started. Clijsters broke immediately, and although she granted the Pole two chances to break back at once, they both went begging. Then just as in the first set, when Clijsters was serving to close it out, she put two more chances to break Radwanska's way, and at last she took her chance with a powerful return of serve. She held serve to give the scoreline some respectability, but the match always belonged to the Belgian.

Kim Clijsters talks about Agnieszka Radwanska after the match....

KIM CLIJSTERS: "Yeah. She's a different type of player I think than you usually get to play. She's not the type of player who is going to really dictate the points. She hits very low shots. She moves well. She moves really well. I think the better of a shot you hit, the tougher the ball comes back. I think she's one of those types of players. She missed some easy shots, where I just brought the ball back. If I hit some good shots, she came up with some good shots as well. Just a little bit different, you know, out there. Just tougher to get a rhythm, I think.
(...)
Q. This is Radwanska's first Grand Slam event. What sort of future do you think she has?

KIM CLIJSTERS: Really good player. Like I said before, she's so young still. She already has a really good game. She's not the type of player who makes a lot of unforced errors. I think she moves well. I think her serve is still something that can get a lot better. That will give her a lot of free points I think once she starts playing against the higher ranked players. But I definitely think she's going to be a real good player. "

Getting To Know: Agnieszka Radwanska

Polish teen Agnieszka Radwanska first began raising eyebrows last year, winning three ITF Women’s Circuit titles and capturing the junior Wimbledon singles title. Having proven herself to be a poised competitor in big matches, it came as no surprise that the Krakow native would step up to the plate in a big way in her recent Sony Ericsson WTA Tour main draw debut in Warsaw. Competing with a Top 100 player for the first time, the 17-year-old stunned world No.12 Anastasia Myskina in her opening match, then took out 32nd-ranked Klara Koukalova before falling in three sets to Elena Dementieva. Now, in her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, she has made it all the way to the fourth round, where she will take on Kim Clijsters.

sonyericssonwtatour.com caught up with Agnieszka recently in Warsaw.

Tell us about your hometown, where you were born and grew up.
I was born in Krakow but lived in Germany from when I was 1 to when I was 7. My dad was a coach at a tennis club in Gronau, Germany. I came back to Krakow when I was 7.

Talk about your earliest memory playing tennis; how did you start?
I started playing tennis when I was 5, when my father took me to play at the club in Gronau. I don’t remember it but my dad does!

What does your family do? Do any of them play sports or tennis?
My dad is my tennis coach. My mom is an accountant, and played just a little bit. My younger sister, Urszula, is also a tennis player. We practice together too.

What did you like doing as a child outside of playing tennis?
I liked swimming, and other sports too, like running.

Tell us about your early coaching; how were you supported?
My dad has been my coach for my whole life. He goes with me everywhere, to all my tournaments. He is always with me.

Who were your tennis idols growing up, and why?
Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf. They were the best, and won everything, so I looked up to them.

What types of off-court training do you do?
I do lots of fitness, going to the gym and also more running in the summer, and some swimming too.

What is the strongest memory of your career to date?
This week [Warsaw] is really good for me, my first tournament and I made the quarterfinals. I am really excited about this result.

What do you do away from the courts to relax?
I like going to the cinema, also listening to music and reading.

What would you have done if you hadn’t been a tennis player?
I don’t think anything else. Since I was young I only played tennis.

What is it like balancing high school with professional tennis?
It is difficult but if I can play tennis, I can do school too. It is very important for me to finish high school. I will finish in June 2007.

What is it like having your sister traveling with you?
She’s really busy all the time, she is going to start playing the Tour with me next year though so we’ll travel together everywhere. She’s not coming to Prague with me this week because her ranking isn’t high enough, so she is playing an ITF in Warsaw.

What do you think about Polish tennis right now, is it growing?
Well in the Top 100 it is only one Polish player, Domachowska, so now it’s not so good. But maybe soon I will be the second one.

In your own words, describe your game style.
I concentrate really hard, and I work a lot on my technique and trying to hit the ball really hard. I am a baseliner and my favorite shot is my forehand. I like to play on clay and grass.
