Jane and Ruflina arrive in Paris

After Strasbourgh Jane arrives with Ruflina in Paris airport.

Here is an interview with Jane about French Open

Q:So how are you feeling this week?
A: Well, I feel that my form improve a lot, Strasbourgh lift my confidence a little bit, I am happy about reaching the semis in Strasbourgh it was important to me.

Q: You came here as the defending champion, how optimistic are you?
A: Well, I mean the tour is so deep now, I am not vene looking at winning, I will take it one match at a time, the draw doe snot favour me and the chance is that I may be out in the second round when I schedule to play two spanish gals, but I will just enjoy the experience of a defending champ.

Q:Where is your sister Mary?
A: She is in Paris already, and she is practising hard, and obviously, she is playing qualifying and she is doing everything she can, to get into top shape.

May 25th, 2002, 10:29 PM

May 26th, 2002, 12:48 AM
Where is DUlko/Dombrowski in the mixed doubles draw????

May 26th, 2002, 03:43 AM
Larisa Ferrer: Deffinetely the favorite. With 4 titles in her belt has enough conffidence for winning the whole thing. But she some premature exits in Hamburg and Berlin so everything is possible.

Ruflina Taliamanosoko: Runner-Up last year. A fine preparation for with some finals but still no titles. Her nerves in a final are enormous but maybe her last year experience can help her.

Sabine Graf: 0-4 in clay says it all. Tough match in a second round. If she passes that 2r she could make Qf.

Marteena Huubere: Nothing impressing in the clay season. Could be out in second round with a hot Conde-Martinez.

Eva Sorrenta: She can win 10 titles before making well in a grand slam. She usually is not the same in the grand slams. Even though this year has became consistent for passing the first match. Should make at least quarterfinals.

Regla Torres: She prooved how good she is on this surface. She is determined but a loss to Monica Gambill showed also her weakness. Should be able to make semifinals but her third round seed is not a bad player...

Brenda Van Haak: Won 2 big titles this year. One in clay. Should be a tough one to beat but wont pass the QF.

Tiffani Eggert: Consistency was what she was caracterized by.. but two straight loses make her lose that... anyways she should be ok by now and should make a very good performance here. One of the favorites for getting the title.

Anjelica de la Courtiere: She can lose in r1 and next week win the toughest event in the world. Should pass her quarterfinal section. And a clash vs doubles partner Sorrenta will be interesting.

Jane Wong: Horrible clay season... seemed well after winning Amelia Island but then things went horrible. A semifinal in Strasbourg. Jane vs Regla in 3r.. winner will be semifinalist.

Larissa Liashenko: Has entered in a horrible streak. But still is the RG 2001 Jr Champ. She loves clay and is good by her self should make 3r and then we will see.

Bryanne Applegate: She will make 3r because she is superior to both of her 2r opponents. But out in 3r deffinetely.

Paula Masterton: Has had the worst draws in this clay season. But has won the matches she should. She can go far if she is not nervous.

Monica de la Cal: Where was Monica? finally after a long injury she is back she may lose in r2 because of rustiness but if she passes her r1 then take care.

Gisele Noventz: Newcomer can do well but she is not consistent and can find her Roland Garros to end quick.

Gianna Adrianna Dulko: Playing bad, then great, then bad. She has to be consistent to pass her 2r or bye bye.

Polish tennis superstar Magdalena Grzybowska-Lewkowicz predicts the winner of selected matches:

Krivencheva-Molik over Zubir in 3 sets : "Katarina is a great junior with good promise. Zubir is good but beatable. I predict Katarina to take this."

Dhlopocova over Jahfson in 3 sets "This will be a tough match. However, Natalya should prevail over the controversial but talented Madonika."

Fernandez over Kroulikova in 2 sets: "Fernandez should have no problem with Anna. This should be an easy victory."

Jennifer Selles over Majlana in 3 sets: "Another tough match, but the Polish youngster should prevail over the talented Bulgarian. This will be a marathon match as both players will play well."

2R: Anne Gambill over Liashenko in 2 sets: "LIashenko's rusty play will become evident as Anne's talented play and precise shots will blow the Belarussian away."

2R: Conde-Martinez over (4) Huubere in 3 sets
SF: (6) Torres over (1) Ferrer in 3 sets

Sorrenta : 2R
Torres: F
WINNER: Ruflina Toliomansoko

Marteena looks forward to Roland Garros!!

"I had a nice last week, didn't play a tournament for the first time in a while, and it was very relaxing. I didn't play much at all, as my body was beginning to ache a little bit. I started hitting again yesterday, and am feeling good. I don't expect much here, because my results have not been that good on clay lately :(. Plus, i could have a very tough first opponent in Anabel. I hope to play well, and i look forward to the doubles and mixed aswell. I always have a blast playing with Larisa and Jonas, and i hope i can do well here and not let them down"

Good Luck to:

May 27th, 2002, 02:21 PM

Monica Gambill is ready to make her mark on the FWTT tour and win her first tournament and first grandslam. She is in Paris preparing for the French open the second granslam of the year and she is very positive.
'After reaching the final last week i am very confident i can do well here and i'm really looking forward to my first Roland Garros.I played juniors here last year and didn't do very well but i am a totally different player now!'
Her grandslam CV doesn't read very well with 2 1st round defeats and a 2nd round in the US open.
'Austrailia as a really thought loss 12-10 in the third is always gonna dissapoint performance wise i played well but she was better.I've got high hopes for here though i want at least a 3rd round other wise i'll be very dissapointed but what i really want is the title:D'

Brazilian teenager dream is ended

PARIS - Brazil's Barbara Miele debuting on Grand Slam, ad playing with all pressure above her, fell under Russian's Butyrskaya aggresive game. The eighth seed couldn't resist the groundstrokes from the young Russian.

"I didn't find my rythym. I was hopeless in the second set." said Miele who is still on mixed doubles competition with Italy's Julio Garreti

"When I finally discovered where I was, she already won" said her. "I want to play a good tournament now with Linzi (Paterson) and Julio"

In the end, Barbara also couldn't hide her sad feelings about her performance. She started to cry and ran for the locker room being consolated by elder sister Lara Miele, who is still doubtful to comeback into tennis.

"I see that everybody is predicting me to lose against anne gambill. well, if i'm going down with everybody saying i am going down, im NOT going down without a fight."

''I played pretty well today. Not as good as in Madrid but a win is a win. She started the match really well, she was very consistant and I was having problems with the conditions out there. It was faster then I expected but after the first set, I adjust my game and it worked. I'm playing very well against the consistant players but I'll have to be ready to play the hard hitters!

Nicoletta Lapentti reaches the main draw following qualifying win

''That was a very close match. She is very young and got tight and erratic. I mean, she lead 5-2 in the third set and blew it by playing my game and making unforced errors. I just kept the ball in play very deep with lots of spin and she just lost it from there! My game was very good today. I lost the first set just because she played much better then me. The last two sets were very good for me. I played so well! I think in the whole match I made 14 errors, so that's very good. I don't know who I'll play in the main draw yet, but I'll be ready!!!''

Nicoletta Lapentti hits a forehand to Caroline Mutola in the qualifying round of the French Open. Lapentti won the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 after trailing 2-5 in the third set.

Madonika Diva Jahfson MOR def. Natalya Dlhopolcova SVK 6-4 6-3

Miss Madonika Diva Jahfson, the most famous player on the FWTT tour, walked onto Court 1 for her opening match on Wednesday and acted as if she owned the place.

Jahfson stunned the crowd from the very beginning by her incredibly chic outfit.

"We're in Paris, and Paris is a city of couture and glamour. I am the definition of glamour, of fame, of fashion. I know how to dress baby, this isn't Daniela T. waiting for Jelena Dokic to pick out her outfits."

Jahfson displayed an amazing array of winners, and aces before destroying her oponent Natalya Dlhopolcova.

"She's so bad, it's not even worth it to go through all the trouble to pronounce her name. Kind of like with Daniela, who I believe lost in qualifying here. Her and Lindsay Anne-Sarile must be best friends now. LOL!"

Next for Jahfson is Sabine Graf, the #3 seed.

"She's had so many first round loses lately that I would just love to put her out of her misery and send her home. She's a fine example of what happens to you after you stuff yourself with cranberry sauce every night...you know what I mean, your ass just gets blowted. I've spoken to Jelena Dokic about this when she was on the tour."

When speaking about her recent doubles title with Larisa Ferrer, Jahfson rolls her eyes as if to dismiss the topic.

"I mean it was fun and all, but overall a waste of my time. Doubles is for players like Tiffani Eggert. I'm a singles kind of gal. Those bitches learned that the hard way, LOL!"

When asked who she thinks will win the French Open, Jahfson laughs off the question.

"You know my opinion on the matter, but I'll tell you one thing...it won't be Regla Torres. That bitch is more wasted than Jane Wong was after she finally won a fucking match. And speaking of Jane Wong, a big thank you to my awesome friend Ruflina for TELLING JANE MY POINTS. Did you guys actually think Jane could win a match on her own? LOLOL! She even needs Ruflina to wipe her ass for her."

Katarina Krivencheva-Molik is disappointed to lose her match 7-6(10) 6-7(3) 7-5 after trailing 7-6 4-1. "I really thought I could win the match but Riana played well and managed to pull out with a win. However, she is a high ranked and talented player, so this was a great experience for me. I hope to do well in doubles with Natalya.

Dlhopolcova Falls In Slam Debut

14 year old Slovak Natalya Dlhopolcova fell in her grand slam debut at Roland Garros today, losing in straight sets to outgoing opponent Madonika Diva Jahfson. Jahfson rarely opened the doors for her inexperienced opponent who coming into the tournament, had been struggling on clay. Despite losing, the young teen was happy with the experience, and also had a reply to Jahfson's comments toward her:

"You know it's sad when a grown woman has nothing better to do with her time than trash a 14 year old girl. If that's what she wants to do, she can be my guest because her sad attempts as insulting me do not hurt me in the slightest. Obviously her words are getting old and tired, and that's why she's put on that goofy outfit to try and get a little added attention to make up for it. I had a fun time out there just laughing at that sad excuse for a fashion statement. Even I know that *matching* colours are step one to a good fashion statement, and I suggest she go back to her basic learning book to remember that one. I look forward to seeing her make a fool of herself for the rest of the week, though I don't expect to see her around too much longer anyway!"

Karla Herrera Upsets las year`s semifinalist Fleur Delacour!!!

Q. Karla how you think you did in your Frenchopen debut?
Well it`s not easy going out on your first match against someone who is such a especialist on this court as Fleur, she was a semifinalist last year, but i don´t know i came pretty relaxed today and got breaks at the start of both sets and that gave me a lot of confidence.

Q. Now the Top seeded, how you expectations there?
Well i only expect to try out there and do my best as possible, she is the top seeded, i mean Larissa is the player to beat, i will just try my best and see what happens.

Thanks Karla good luck!!!

'I'll be going into the math confident i played her last week and beat her so hopefully i can do it again. The key to beating her is staying aggressive but you have to wait for your oppertuinities in rallies to hit a winner past her.She plays brilliant shots all the time and sometimes she drives me crazy with her play.It might be possible for me to play awful against her and loose 0 and 0!But i no what to do now.'

Zerene Fernandez def. Anna Kroulikova 4-6 7-6(0) 6-4

Interview with Zerene Fernandez

Q. How did you feel when you were down 4-5 5*-5 facing two break points and possibly being knocked out?
ZF: Well, I just tried to focus. I mean, I don't even like to consider the possibility that I would lose, no matter how far down I am. I think I win a lot of matches with pure guts. I just really tried to get in my first serve flat and deep, and just go for my shots. Anna is a really good player and a good friend, so I feel bad for her but I'm happy to get through this match.

Q. Next up, Anjelica de la Courtiere. How do you feel about playing her here?
ZF: Anjie is my best friend on the tour and also my mentor. She's taught me a lot about the tennis on clay, and helped me become a good doubles player as well. Obviously she's the favorite, but I just have to go out there and play my game. It will be difficult to play against her, and I'm sure the crowd will be behind her, they love her here in France still.

Q. Are you entered in the doubles? Mixed?
ZF: Yes, I'll play doubles here with Ana-Maria Herrera, and mixed doubles with Hugo Armando.

Q. Thanks, Zerene.
ZF: No problem!

Monica Gambill is out of the french opne after an epic 3 hour marathon match with Nicoletta Lapentti which Gambill lost 4-6 7-6 7-5.Gambill led 6-4 5-4 and had match points in the next game aswell as in the second set tiebreak but failed to win on any of them. She was down 0-4 in the third set and battled back to lead 5-4 but lost the final set 7-5.
'It was such a battle!I'm really dissapointed that i lost as i lost a similar kind of match in Australia. But i could not finish the points Nicoletta just got every singles ball back mainly from 6-4 5-4 she hit some wondeful defensive shots and mixed up the play it got me really frustrated and i made errors which is why i was down 4-0 but then i just the ball the hardest i could and everything came off as a winner but she stuck to her gameplan and won.She played amazing and has a great game for clay she is sure one to watch out for in this tournament'

Asked about her younger sisters win

'Well Anne seems to play well in the grandslams she won 3 matches in Austrailia in the pros and was runner up 14-12 third set in the juniors and here she is again winning 8-6 in the third.i didn't see her win as i was playing at the time but i heard that she played very well. The pros better watch out for her cos she is ready to make a big impact'

Asked about what she intended to do now

'Well i'm playing doubles with Anne here and Mixed with my coach Myfyr Owen Rhun, after i'm out of them or have won i will be going to Birmingham to practice for grass'

15 year old Sophia Sabatini beat France's Francois L'ane 6-3 6-1 in the 1st round of the French Open. Sabatini, playing in her 1st senior French Open played an agressive and tactical match against a nervous L'ane. The brit, who qualified in Hamburg and reached the second round of Berlin always looked in control.

I'm really happy. To win a match here is good for me, espesially after my horrible start to the year

Sabatini, a semi finalist in the juniors last year, has very happy memories here.

This is where I won my 1st singles match on the tour, and reached the semi's. I was very happy with the way I played today and I felt very confident. I've played and beatn L'ane twice and It felt good to win here

She now plays second seed Ruflina Taliamanosoko.

It will be a tough match. I've played her twice this year, both on clay and lost in 3 sets both times, but I will play my best and see what happens.

Madonika Diva Jahfson pulled out of the 2002 French Open on Friday. While play was suspended in the middle of the third set of her second round match, Jahfson looked to be in good spirits but shocked the press.

"I have prior engagements. I thought we would finish the match today but we didn't so I see no further reason for me to be here since I have other things to do."

Jahfson would not specify what "other things" she had to do, but it is rumored that she may be preparing another controversial and pornographic scandal.

Jahfson is not playing any Wimbledon warm ups and is doubtful to compete at Wimbledon.

"I'm not sure I will be making it to Wimbledon this year. I have a few other things in mind that will piss more people off."

Jahfson said very little of her oponent Sabine Graf.
"She is a pathetic sow. She came out in a patato sack, literally. Somebody rescue that girl before she becomes fashion roadkill."

"A player of her standards has no chance at beating me. I am sorry I can not finish my match and destroy her."

When asked about a recent poll on whether she should be banned from the tour, in which FWTT players voted, Jahfson had this to say,

"I cast my vote, and it was a yes! They don't realize that the more controversy they give me, the more middle fingers I'll put up. And I just stuck one up Lindsay Anne-Sarile's ass. So sit down bitch, and don't get loud since your rank is still stank."

Lapentti in the second round after thriller win

Q: Nicoletta, a great win for you considering you lost to her last week?

A: Yes, I lost to Monica last week but the conditions out there were different. I think the court were much faster and that was to her advantage I think! Today, the court were slower and that helped me. I'm very satisfied with that win.

Q: How did you play her?

A: Didn't you see the match?(laughs) Well, I think to be sucessful against her, you have to be very patient. Keep the ball in play as long as you can. Since she has two hands on both sides, I tried to keep the ball very low or very high. In the first set, she just was very consistant with her power shots, but at 6-4 / 5-4, she got tight and played some loose points. I took advantage of it.

Q: You play Sorrenta next. Have you ever played her before? Do you think you have chance?

A: I never played her before and yes, I have a chance to beat her. On any given day, anyone can beat anyone. The level of play here in the FWTT is very good. It should be a great match for sure!

Q: Thanks Nicoletta.

A: No problem!

No. 6 seed Regla Torres is relieved to have won her second round match against a very talented Riana. She said "Last time we played she had so many opportunities to take the second set which she didn't, this time she made sure she came out firing, I was lucky to have been able to stick with her the whole match"

She will play either compatriot Adriana Gonzalez or defending champion Jane Wong in her next match. "Whoever it is it will be tough, but with their match delayed it's a good thing for me cause I can rest and see how both are playing to come up with a strategy for next round", said Torres.

Larissa Liashenko crashes in horror show

The 2002 claycourt season has been a real struggle for Larissa Liashenko. In a match, in which she was the clear favourite, Liashenko commited 64 unforced errors before losing to quite unknown Anne Gambill. The 2001 Junior French Open winner never looked confortable on the slow red clay, while her young teen opponent kept the ball in play patiently waiting for the errors which came pretty often.

Liashenko's match stats

% of 1st serve in: 43%
% of 1st serve points won: 61%
% of 2nd serve points won: 41%
Aces: 3
Double faults: 1
Winners(including service): 12
Unforced errors: 64
Net approach: 2/13 = 13%
Fastest serve(KM): 173 KM
Average 1st serve speed(KM): 164 KM
Average 2nd serve speed(KM): 149 KM

Larissa Liashenko reacts after losing a point to Anne Gambill

Liashenko's post match comments

Well, it's very dissapointing losing again in the first round especially here in Paris where I had success before, winning the 2001 juniors and the 2002 Open Gaz the France. I played quite horrible today, but what can I do. She played well and intelligently. I'm still in the doubles with Anna and in the mixed doubles with my brother Alexei. I'm glad the clay season is over, it was a nightmare. I'll try to leave it behind and get ready for Wimbledon.

Q. How did it feel, your first match back at Roland Garros?
DLC: It was great. I'm very happy to be back here again.

Q. It was an amazing match, very high quality. You simply outplayed your younger opponent. Also, the crowd was totally on your side the entire match... did that surprise you?
DLC: Well, not really. I think the French fans like me obviously. And yes, the match was great. Zerene wasn't playing at her best, but I played very well. I'm glad to make it through to the round of 16.

Q. Thanks Anjelica, and good luck.

'She claims i was just hitting the ball in court waiting for errors, was she playing the same match i played my useual game of hitting the ball hard and going for winners. She did play bad but i played well.Anyway i'm the one in the third round nor her!'

Interview with Anjelica de la Courtiere

Q. Very close match. Only one break of serve throughout the entire encounter. What kept you so calm in the first set tiebreak?
DLC: I'm not sure really. I quess I was thinking back to our previous meetings and seeing that she hasn't broken my serve in a long time. I was pretty sure that even if I lost the tiebreak I could win the match. I just played my shots... at 12-12 she threw in a double fault, and then the next point I served and volleyed which really threw her off, forcing the error. We held serve then until 5-4* and I broke to take the match. The crowd was also a big factor. They've never been so behind me.

Q. Is it a surprise to you that they still love you here in Paris?
DLC: Not really, they understand my reasons for playing for Canada. The tennis federation here is in shambles. Hopefully it will be repaired soon. There is such talent here in France.

Q. Your doubles partner, Eva Sorrenta in the quarters. How do you feel about this match?
DLC: I think since it's on clay I'll have the advantage. I'm not looking forward to it.

Q. Looking forward to the doubles match?
DLC: I really want to do well in the doubles. I'm very nervous. I just, I have played so well over the past year and I feel I deserve the #1 ranking. Even if it's only for a week. Eva is there now, and if I stay ahead of Ferrer I'll be #1 after Wimbledon. I just think.... well, I'll be very disappointed if I don't get there. I mean, it's not the most important thing, obviously winning the slams is. But it would be nice. Nice to know that over the past year, I was the best in the world at something.

Q. Thanks Anjelica, and good luck!
DLC: Thank you!

Marteena congratulates Anjelica on her win:

"The match was sooo tough, I had some opportunities to take the first set, having 4 set points in the tiebreaker, but she was too good on those points. Come the 2nd set, and I was starting to feel a little tired, but she played better than me and stayed stronger both physically and mentally. I was hoping to do well here, but that's what happens i suppose. Now i have to concentrate on doubles and mixed before moving to the grass for Birmingham next week."

Anne Gambill is through to the quarter finals of Roland Garros after a hard fought 4-6 7-5 8-6 win over Tiffani Eggert. It was yet another shock win for the 13 year old who defeated Larissa Liashenko in the previous round.
'I think this win proves that beating Larisa was no fluke i fought really hard today and played my useual aggressive game.I can't believe that i am in the quarter finals of Roland Garros its such a dream for me'

But it was bad news in the doubles as Anne and her sister Monica lost 7-5 in the third to a team they had previously beat.

'We are dissapointed to have lost but hell i was tired after playing an 8-6 in the third singles i thought we did well to get 7-5 in the third'

Taliamanosoko in singles and doubles quarterfinals

Ruflina Taliamanosoko edged out the young Maikano Yamada-Miyachi in 2 tough tiebreak sets today to advance to her 2nd consecutive Roland Garros quarterfinal. After making the finals here last year, Ruflina spoke of concern about performing well, but she has shone that she is ready to step up to the plate and do what it takes to win.

After Jane Wong's most disappointing loss ever in the first round, she had to be consoled by Ruflina. In the doubles, they advanced to the quarterfinals with a three set win over the Gambill sisters.

I was so nervous coming in, so to make the quarterfinals, I am already at ease. I felt badly for Jane as she had championship points to defend but lost early. I am so glad that the doubles can perhaps create some solace for her, though it will never replace singles. Who knows....maybe we can win the entire tournament.

The other young Botswanian, Caroline Mutola, lost early in qualifying, but is showing her doubles prowess. She, along with Catherine Pierce, are in the Roland Garros quarterfinals. In addition, she is playing with the male Botswanian junior, Agbani Pupotolope in mixed doubles where they advanced to the round of 32. It was a straight set win over Maria Conde-Martinez, and the tour director, Alejandro Ituarte.

Battle of the doubles partners!

Two weeks ago in Rome, Gianna Adriana Dulko ended her doubles partner Regla Torres' 15 match winning streak by beating her 1-6 7-6 6-2 in the semi-finals. Tomorrow, they will face each other again in the Roland Garros quarter-finals.

Both have played well to get to to the quarters. Dulko defeated talented junior Ana-Maria Herrera 7-6 7-6 and reigning Wimbledon champ Sabine Graf 7-6 7-6. However, Torres has struggled in her early rounds.

She struggled past Riana Zubir 3-6 6-4 7-5, and defeated a red hot Adriana Gonzalez 7-6 3-6 6-2. Both played a tense doubles match today against Fernandez/Herrera and crashed out in 3 sets. It seems both had the singles match on their minds.

Prediction: A relatively fresh Gianna Adriana Dulko will knock out one of the pre-tournament favourites in straight sets.

Rome Queen takes on the World #1!

World #1 Larisa Ferrer has won 4 claycourt tournaments this year, and is hungry for the elusive Roland Garros crown. With defending champ Jane Wong gone, her favouritism has grown. But in the quarters she faces dangerous Belgian Brenda Van Haak.

Brenda won Rome two weeks ago, although in absence of the likes of Ferrer and Graf, and has confirmed herself as a favourite for the title with good early round form. She downed a dangerous floater Olive Mozzarella 7-5 7-5, and defeated the consistent Hong Da Jung 6-4 7-6.

Ferrer, however, has struggled in her early round matches defeating talented Karla Herrera 7-6 1-6 6-0, but barely escaping from a 3rd round exit against Australian Open finalist Tanya Hingis, by winning 6-4 5-7 10-8.

Prediction: Her last round will give the world #1 a wake-up call and despite Van Haak throwing everything at her, Ferrer will see another grand slam semi with a tight 3 set victory.

And then there were four

The 2002 Roland Garros Quarterfinals took place today with each winner booking a place in the semifinals. Here we will look at what occured with todays matches.

Match #1

http://ft.sports.com/tennis/images/080101schett_a.jpg vs. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/gallery/open/06dementieva.jpg

The omnipresent FWTT #1 Larissa Ferrer of England took on the giant-killer Brenda Van Haak of Belgium.

In the first set, no breaks occured, and a tiebreaker took place, which was won on a return down the line by the Brit - 7/6(9) to Ferrer. The Belgian pressured Larissa more in the 2nd set and took it with an ace - 6/4 to Van Haak. The final set showed Larissa why she is #1 with superb volleys and serve to take the game, set, and match 7/6(9), 4/6, 6/3.

Match #2

http://www.igs.net/~bmitchell/Tennis/Fernan-m/mj16.jpg vs. http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:vIfU18zfhSAC:www.tribuneindia.com/20010531/4sports.gif

The hottest player in the world, Regla Torres, took on the one girl that has given her problems recently, Gianna Adriana Dulko. A gallant effort from the Polish girl ensued, but in the end, the Cuban born Spainard won the match 3/6, 7/5, 6/3.

Match #3

http://www.chesco.com/~nvayn/tennis/dechy/pics/rolgar/dechy.jpg vs. http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:6M-vx3fvFWUC:www.*****************/Players/RightofPassage/Countries/Canada/PelletierMarieEve/images/US-MP-002.jpg

The battle of fellow Canadians, best friends, doubles partners, and wifes took the court third. Anjie, the French born Canadian, scored the mild upset with a 6/4, 7/5 in an emotion-less match that left both players neither happy nor sad.

Match #4

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/tennis/_photos/2001-08-26-inside-venus.jpg vs. http://www.lta.org.uk/spect/plfacts/keothavong190.jpg

The final match of the day pitted the veteran, Ruflina, against the young 13 year old, Anne Gambill. Terrific serves, long baseline ralleys, incredible volleys, and even the amusing wave occured (from the crowd....not the players) during this match with the veteran edging out Anne 7/5, 4/6, 7/5.

With all the matches completed, we are now in our semifinals.

Larissa Ferrer vs. Regla Torres

Anjelica de la Courtiere vs. Ruflina Taliamanosoko

The best is yet to come! :D

Good Day for de la Courtiere
June 4, 2002

Today Anjelica de la Courtiere of France had her most successful day in her tennis career. The young Canadian played and won three matches - giving herself semifinal births in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles at the French Open.

de la Courtiere started the day by beating her wife and doubles partner Eva Sorrenta in an anticlimatic match that had de la Courtiere dominating rallies from the baseline. Sorrenta a few times tried to change the pace of the match by coming to net, but had limited success. de la Courtiere took the match 6-4 7-5.

Next, de la Courtiere teamed up with the player she just ousted from the championships to post a doubles victory over the upstart team of Pierce/Mutola.

Even then, her day was not finished. She again took the court with mixed doubles partner Paul-Henri Mathieu, who was coming off a sad loss to Andre Agassi in the men's event. The pair recorded a win over the team of Zerene Fernandez/Hugo Armando who upset their way to the quarterfinals.

"Obviously today was hard for more reasons than one," said de la Courtiere. "In singles I had to play my wife, in mixed doubles I had to play my friend and advisee. I'm feeling so tired right now. I don't know how much steam I have left going into the next rounds. My knee is sore and today was an emotional rollercoaster. I'm happy to have played so well in this tournament, and I hope that I can stay this consistant through the rest of the year."

Anjelica de la Courtiere of Canada stands ready to return serve during her mixed doubles match with partner Paul-Henri Mathieu of France.

Tiffani has been very quiet this French Open. However, she congratulates her friends Ruflina and Larisa on reaching the final. When was the last time #1 and #2 played in the final. Very fitting.

Also congrats to Jane and Ruflina in doubles!

So close for Anjelica again. She hopes that next year maybe she can go two wins further, but she's happy with how she played in the tournament. She also hopes that she can do well still in the doubles and mixed doubles events.

Taliamanosko in singles and doubles final.....out of mixed doubles

Ruflina Taliamanosoko couldn't make it 3 for 3 today, losing in her final match with her husband, Ikumbo Kimjumba, to Syria Gonzalez and Tommy Robredo 8/6 in the 3rd set of the semifinals in mixed doubles.

An early 11 AM start saw her taking the court against Anjelica de la Courtiere of France. A good friend of Ruflina and former #1, Anjelica was firing on all cylinders to go up 3/0. Ruflina proceeded to win five games in row for a 5/3 lead. Anjie came back and pushed the set to a tiebreaker. When de la Courtiere finally hit a backhand wide on Taliamanosoko's third set point, it was 1 set to love Ruflina 7/6(5).

An early break of serve was all de la Courtiere needed for a 6/4 second set in which she only lost 2 points on serve - one on a double fault and another on a let cord.

The third and most exciting set contained brilliant ralleys, excellent serves, and severe emotions as Ruflina prevailed 7/5 to take the match 2 sets to one.

After that match, Larissa Ferrer, the world #1, took on the tour's hottest player in Regla Torres.

After a see-saw match, Larissa prevailed 7/5, 5/7, 12/10.

Then the two singles finalists (world #1 and #2) paired against each other in doubles. Ruflina with Jane Wong (best friend, and godmother of daughter #2) and Larissa with Marteena Huubere (long time tour doubles partner). It was a surprisingly quick match, with the African/Asian duo winning 6/3, 7/5.

Ruflina spoke with the press after the match

Q: A jam packed day?

A: First of all, I would just like to say this is unbelievable. I have defended all of my points in singles, which is what I was so afraid I could not do. Secondly, I am defending champion in doubles, so to make the finals here with Jane is awesome. She is in such a good mood now, after her singles loss, and is excited about playing in the final.

Q: You play Larissa again. The last time you beat her - and only time - was at the 2001 US Open Finals. You feel you have an edge?

A: (Laughter) Against Larissa? You've got to be kidding me. She is such a consistent player, you just never know. I'm going to play my best and play my game, because that is all I can do. If I win, I'm the Roland Garros Champion.....if I lose, I'm the Roland Garros runner-up. I would love to win more than anything, so I will definitely give my try.

Q: de la Courtiere a tough player?

A: The crowd was definitely on her side and her serve was just kicking today. I don't really know how I got the break in the 3rd...but I was just thankful I did. I know she wanted to do better here, but semifinals is still awesome, because I don't believe she played here last year.

Q: Ruflina, thank you, and good luck in your final matches.

A: Thanks! :)

Junior duo makes history by reaching the French Open final

The 1/2 Russian and 1/2 Belarussian duo of Irina Butyrskaya and Dorissya Morkovina did what no one expected them to do! At the tender age of 13 and 12, they reached the final of the doubles at the French Open. In the 1/2 finals, they defeated the #1 seed Anjelica De la Courtiere/Eva Sorrenta in straight set to reach the final. In the final, they will face Ruflina Taliamanosoko and Jane Wong.

OMG, Jane and Ruflina win their 2nd Grand Slam title together.

This is just unbelivably awesome to perform so well in the biggest tournament in the world and to share this moment with Jane is truly exceptional.

This is just too good to be true. After my early exit in singles, I didn't know what to think, but this win definitely makes up a little. I am so happy with how I am playing that this gives me confidence for Wimbledon. I can't believe we won another Grand Slam.

Jane and Ruflina currently hold 2 active doubles Grand Slams.

This is Jane's 3rd Grand Slam title (2001 French singles, 2001 US Open Doubles)

This is Ruflina's 5th Grand Slam title (2001 French Doubles, 2001 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles, 2001 US Open Singles, 2001 US Open doubles).

:) :D

Monica Gambill won her first grandslam final today at the French Open in Roland Garros in the mixed doubles event with her coach and good friend Myfyr Owen Rhun. The pair managed to win the final 5-7 7-5 8-6 in what was a marathon 3 hours doubles match with great play both at the net and at the baseline.Monicas groundstrokes were fired from the baseline throughout with Myfyr hitting crisp volleys at the net.
'I'm just so happy that we won it was a great match we played well and in the final set we were just slightly less tense in the final few games'
Its tops off a fantastic 2 weeks for the Gambill final as younger sister Anne was a singles quater finalist and is in the final of the juniors where she still has to play that final and Monica and Anne together reached the second round in the doubles event.
'The only bad thing about here was my early loss in singles but i am happy with my play so i now go into Birmingham next week very confident'

Hi guys, I just manage to pop in using the internet, and just hope everyone having a great time.

I am so so happy to win my double grand slam and with Ruflina is just unbelievable, we play very badly in the season and it is so nice that we rise to the occasion, I lost in second round to Adriana but I know that I can rebound, even if I am no. 50 in the world I will continue to play this wonderful game

Jun 9th, 2002, 05:41 PM
Also Ruflina even though you lost in the singles final, I am glad you did so well, well done.

Congrats Larisa, you are the best player in the world, and I am sure you are over the moon with youjr victory
