View Full Version : Serena Williams is the most consistently good player on the tour

That sounds absurd. Consider this.

Since (and including) the Canadian Open 2001, Serena Williams has played in nine tournaments. She retired from Sydney.

Of the remaining eight, she's made the finals in seven of them. She lost in the QFs of the other one. (she played well too.) No one else even comes close to this level of play. She's in the finals virtually every time she plays.

OMIGOD!!!!!!!! FINALLY! Thank you! I am absolutely puzzled why everyone answered Venus on my questionnaire as to who is the better Williams sister. Venus is so fickle! Serena only loses to two people pretty much

Go Serena :)

I miss her and Sandrine's matches from 1999....

So consistent, playing so well - it's only a matter of time before she adds to her GS title collection.

What interests me though is which GS will it be, unless Serena wins the French (which is looking very possible but Paris seems to produce surprise winners all the time) I don't imagine her big sister will give up her own titles without a fight ...

Definitely worth watching :).

True, SERENA has had a real good year, but big sis still has 4 titles and is always the one to beat in a tournament.

Having said that, I would like for SERENA to come away from RG with the title because she has not had a slam win since 99.

As much as I love Venus, I have to agree with the assessment of Serena. Richard has always said that Serena will be the better of the two players.

He's been fairly accurate so far in his other predictions. (Hmmm)

She is so consistent she might be almost as good as her sister.

Imagine what the tour will be like when Serena fully learns how to control points, dominate at the net, and stay healthy. It probably will be Serena and the rest.

Her game is so close to being complete that when she plays, for some reason, I feel relaxed. On the contrary, when Venus plays, I hold my heart in my hands.

I think the second serve, among other things, makes the difference. No need to be effusive here.

Serena is awesome, but Venus has the major accomplishment on tour. Serena is in the same way, but Venus is also there too;)

GO GIRLS, YOU RULE THE TOUR:bounce:

Serena can win the French Open and U.S Open this year, but not Wimbledon, Wimbledon is for Venus!!

Yes Serena is the best player this year by far. I think Richards prediction might come true. Serena I believe by beating her sister 2 and 2 has gotten over the hurdle of big sis.....

Mrs Guga... I think lots of people thought you were asking which Williams sister they liked better, and I like Venus better :p

Serena may have a better game than Venus, but it isn't Venus' game per se which made her a Slam champion. (Look at Jenn - there's no way Jenn's physical game is anywhere near the best in the world.) What Venus and Jenn have is sheer determination and guts, and complete self-belief. Especially in Slams. It looks like Serena's developing that too... let's see if she'll win a Slam this year.

Who are those two people? Venus and...?

I agree, Serena is definitely the player to beat when shes on. If she could only get over the obstacle of Venus, and get injured less, she could be number one playing as few tournies as she does.

Satrista7, I agree, I think most people prefer Serenas game to Venus', but there is something about Venus. She is so mentally focused when she plays, hardly get down on herself (the way Serena used to do last year, she'd lose a point and behave as if the world had come to an end...pff). Venus NEVER gives up. think those match points she fought off against Jen at last years ericsson, or when she was down 1-4 to Jen at the US open and came back to win the set 6-4.

Since last August Serena has really improved, not so much her game as her mental approach. Her recent matches against Jen have been so close but she manages to win them. so I think she is ready for another slam, hopefully she'll get the french.

Experimentee, I think the other person is probably J. Cap. But that was last year, this year Serena has really turned things she has been consistently beating Jennifer and now leads the H2H 5-4. Way to go Serena

I am the opposite. When Venus plays I am so much more relaxed than when Serena plays. As Venus isn't likely to switch into error prone modes, she fights and fights and fights. Serena on the other hand is just amazing when she is on, but once those errors start to creep in, I get scared because she has this tendency to get frustrated and give up and then things start going downhill. But so far this year, that hasn't happened I think Serena took a page out of Venus' book.

Serena's solution to problems used to always be hit the ball harder. Even againt Patty Schnyder at Charleston, she basically self-destucted. She couldn't stop herself from swing hard, and they all went into the net. Suddenly, in Berlin, she fins patience. And when she loses in the finals, the next week she just show MORE patience. She's become a very differnt player in a short span. It's like, after Charleston, she decided to SHOW people she knew how to win on clay. She said it herself.

You can't help but wonder if Wild Thing could still take one last curtain call. Charleston sure showed that Serena isn't gone, just waiting. She's Supergirl.

Not exactly this year. It's been so since mid-year last year, cf Toronto (in August).

I keep reading that Serena is better than Venus and then Venus is better than Serena. The fact of the matter, both are VERY good players with different games. Taking a part their games is so subjective. Some think Serena has the best serve and that Venus has the best ground strokes. Serena makes a lot of unforce errors and Venus is more consistent. It's crazy! Again, the are good and I guess it's just great to hear that so many of you guys are talking about them. That was Richard's prediction (that people will be talking about them) more than who will win. I think at the end of this two weeks at Roland Garros, we will see who is holding up the trophy. Both Venus and Serena have huge obstacles in there way to the finals so whoever wins it will be a great feat.

Well there's no need for me post this again because is exactly how I feel about it.

Before she won USO 99, Serena seemed to have the sheer determination, guts and self-belief. Then she faltered. Now she's back to where she was pre USO 99 - but with the game to accompany it. I fully expect her to reach #1 this year.

Serena is truly amazing... now what she needs to have a winning streak that is long... :D

I'm getting worried for Venus now... ;)
