What a twerp.
A lot of scots say stuff like that, but the way the english press have hyped him, he ought to be a bit more diplomatic. Half the fans supporting him at wimbers will be english. I never could stand him.

thats the british press btw. and thats half the problem, on this island, everything is perceved to be "english". The welsh and scots get a raw deal sometimes and thats why a lot feel this way. I can totally understand, being half english and half scottish i can see both side of the coin.

Thats true, and it really pisses me off. When a welsh sportsman does well he's suddenly 'british', but when an englishman does well he's just 'english'.
I always support Wales, then scotland, and lastly england, but I don't want england to lose when playing other countries!
Murray can support whoever he wants, but he's a public figure and he should think before opening his fat mouth.

If thats how he feels. I often cheer for whoever england is playing against.

I don't want england to win the world cup cos we wouldn't hear the end of it, I mean some people still think 1966 was yesterday.

And after the rugby world cup:o although the aussies were beaten which is a good thing.

Well it was not like that in rugby the last time the two nations met huh?

He is not bitter about that...He probably can't stand the English, because they think Britain is them first and then everybody else or possibly only them.

I have been told how the English go on and on about 1966 and all their succeses all the time. I wouldn't be any different if I were Murray.

Amusing, but the same can be said for the other way round where English people cheer for whoever the Scots are playing. It's just a natural/kind of friendly rivalry ;)

It wouldn't be near as bad if the media we get was not incredibly English-oriented. We don't just have to watch it on the day, we get three months of build up, and three months of post-competition analysis. For EVERY sport, EVERY year, it's the same deal. It's just not relevant to us! And if they happen to win, god forbid, we must endure suffocating triumphalism for years afterwards! :o

He's a half decent young tennis player. Its just a shame that he's also a gangly, dour, outspoken but immensely uncharismatic little twerp who needs a good smack around the ears from his mother, if she wasn't off commentating for Eurosport every bloody whip stitch.

Yeah, one of my friends from Glasgow as also complaining that a lot of the news in Britain is very England-centric and, in some cases, very London-centric as well. I think I read it in a book about the North versus South divide in Britain, but there was a hilarious bit where a Northerner complained about the typical weather report on the news: "It'll be cloudy in Hammersmith and Chiswick, somewhat sunny in Kensington and Chelsea, windy in Putney and Battersea, and damp in the East End. Oh, and the rest of the country will be cold and wet. As usual" (Or something along those lines anyway. ;) )

The "British" press is owned and run largely by foreigners (Murdoch, Conrad Black...), most of whom have their own political agenda (Murdoch HATEs the European Union, the Royals...) and have ONE criteria in the stories they print and the angle they take: will it sell copy?

Why should a Scotsman support England any more than a Frenchman or a German? Why is this even news?

I would have expected no less from a good Scot. Being your typical "Something Hyphen" American, I root for the USA first, the Scotland, then England then France, which is pretty much my ethnic background.

Since USA is in the Group of Death this tournament, I'm kind of hoping England sticks around for a while.

You make very valid points, but come Wimbledon, Murray does get hyped quite a bit as "Britain's Andy Murray", so maybe that's why someone thought this might be news!

Andy is very spoiled and childish. In Hamburg he played awful against Blake, and he looked very disapointed because crowd didnt cheer for him. His facial expresions were terible and body language too.
And of course because of Wimbledon............... he should think twice before saying something like this.
And he would probably like to go in London sometimes........for shopping, have fun, whatever............

Andy sounds like he's getting a bit too big for his boots.

However, the only reason we dont like to see england win is because of the media madness. Its a shame because a lot of the England players seem really nice guys and i'm sure they would get more support from us if the media weren't so blinkered.

As for the comment about Andy having a duty as a professonial sportsman to be diplomatic, doesnt the same apply to Gary Linekar who recently mocked Scotland's football team on Match of the Day?

....and this is the very attitude that leads me to be supporting whoever England play against as well
The problem is that the British media is in fact the English media, so we get force-fed a diet of 1966, Beckham, Henman, etc, etc and quite frankly I'm sick of it, as are millions of Scots.

I still don't like Andy Murray though

To an extent I can see where the Scots and the rest are coming from, certainly in the past England has got more of the limelight sportingly and Scots sporting successes (:tape: ) often became British ones...

However these days the BBC is quite neurotic about pointing Murray is a Scot as well as a Brit, they know the complaints will flood in if they don't.

In this post-devolution world, I think its time people moved on, I have long cheered on the Scots, ocassionally even against England, when I think we've been getting a bit big for our boots, which yes, it does happen from time to time.;) Sometimes we English ARE the jerks some think us...but we have no monopoly on that.

The hopefully small element in Scotland who have watched Braveheart once too often, who like Murray are shaped by this gleeful, dreary anti-Englishness, who seem to want England to lose more than Scotland to win, really need to...GET OVER IT!!!! :p

I am just wondering where all this negativity towards murrays apparent arrogance comes from? Surely its time for a bit of attitude in british tennis, As much as i have enjoyed tim (and greg) over the years, especially with tim, it can seem all a bit "nicey nice", a bit too nice. Its good for tennis (in terms of public perception) that there is now someone prepared to take no shit, and stick there neck out and say it as is it, i think its what we need.

Well considering Wales & Scotland are treated like alien/foreign nations in the British media (i.e. ignorance in pronouncing Welsh names etc. ignorance in most things Welsh) then you can hardly blame people feeling like this....

Anyway, who cares who he wants to win!? That's up to him. I'm extremely proud to be Welsh but I'm also proud to be British. I don't tend to particularly want England to win many soccer matches but that's more to do with the overhyped press, to piss the hooligans off more than English hate, honest ;) Plus I'm totally apathetic towards the sport.

As for Andy....well if he does well at Wimby no one will care where he's from ;) Bit like Virginia Wade really!

I'm smiling at some of the reactions of this thread. :D

Chill out, it's a common joke up here that we support whoever are playing England. Some mean it seriously but I don't think most care enough. I think most Scots don't want England to win the whole thing, however, because we share a lot of the same TV programmes and know they'll never stop talking about it. Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart dominated Formula One for a decade around the same time as England won the World Cup but nobody goes on and on and on about that up here. The past is the past. :)

Andy Murray has an English girlfriend so I figure he can't dislike you that much. :p
