"Poseidon" sinks at North American box office

Sunday May 14 2:11 PM ET

The $160 million disaster film "Poseidon" capsized on its maiden voyage in North America, allowing Tom Cruise's struggling sequel "Mission: Impossible III" to retain the weekend box office crown.

According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, "Poseidon" opened at No. 2 after selling just $20.3 million worth of tickets for the three days beginning May 12. The third installment in Cruise's action franchise earned $24.5 million.

The soggy opening for German director Wolfgang Petersen's costly remake of the 1972 epic "The Poseidon Adventure" was not unexpected. Surveys of moviegoers in the weeks before its release had indicated a distinct lack of enthusiasm.

"While we had hoped for a slightly stronger opening, it's a little premature to assess the financial viability of the movie," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic theatrical distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc.

"Poseidon" also earned $4.4 million after opening in six Asian markets, No. 1 in four of them -- Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

After 10 days, the total for "Mission: Impossible III" stands at $84.6 million. Its drop from last weekend was a modest 49 percent. Most big films usually drop between 50 percent and 60 percent in their second weekends.

The spy thriller also held up well overseas, where the total rose to $129.2 million.

Those were some rare pieces of good news for Cruise, whose bizarre antics in the past year were blamed for the movie's underwhelming $47 million bow in North America last weekend.

The film is clearly trailing its predecessors, although exact comparisons are difficult because they both opened on the Wednesday before the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend at the end of May, while the latest one opened on a regular Friday. After 12 days, 1996's "Mission: Impossible" had earned $107.2 million, and the 2000 sequel $130.7 million.

Industry observers expect the new film to finish up somewhere between $150 million and $185 million. The first one made $181 million and the second one $215 million.

The movies were released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

It has been a rough start to the summer for effects-laden Hollywood extravaganzas. But hopes are high for Sony Corp .'s adaptation of the controversial Vatican bestseller "The Da Vinci Code," which opens worldwide next weekend.

Also new this weekend was the Lindsay Lohan teen romance "Just My Luck," which opened at No. 4 with a modest $5.5 million. Not surprisingly, 80 percent of the audience was female and 70 percent aged under 25, said distributor Twentieth Century Fox, a unit of News Corp.

The No. 3 slot went to former chart-topper "RV," which earned $9.5 million in its third weekend -- a drop of just 14 percent, the lowest in the top 10. Sony's Robin Williams comedy has earned $42.8 million to date, and is playing strongest in the U.S. heartland and suburban markets, the studio said.

1. Mission: Impossible III -- $24,514,000
2. Poseidon -- $20,325,000
3. R.V. -- $9,500,000
4. Just My Luck -- $5,500,000
5. An American Haunting -- $3,689,000
6. United 93 -- $3,583,000
7. Stick It -- $3,239,000
8. Ice Age: The Meltdown -- $2,975,000
9. Silent Hill -- $2,200,000
10. Hoot -- $2,125,000
11. Scary Movie 4 -- $2,080,000
12. Goal! The Dream Begins -- $2,003,000

I asked wifie what she thought of the original [since she's ...um...several years older than I] and she thought it was boring. SO hopefully, the remake will be better. Though I doubt it.
Please come back and post what your critique after seeing it. :)

just saw it tonight...well..put it this way....for remake..it was more fun as it is helped by computer effect eventhough I read the news that they did it without computer effect...but it seems that remake one moves faster than original one...it is more action on remake than original one....so if you need entertainment..remake is not bad...pls note it is not a best story but it is fun to watch...

To be honest I'm not exactly sure what I liked so much about the original. Perhaps just the concept of the adventure escape film (that being said, I HATE HATE HATE the Towering Inferno) I found the idea of them climbing up to the bottom of the ship pretty neat for my age lol, The characters were also good, I like casts with large ensembles like that because you can always pick a favourite etc.

Maybe I wouldn't like it if I saw it first as an adult, I dunno but yes I saw it as a kid and loved it, so it is now one of those childhood memory films :)

Even as kid I thought the acting was horribly embarrassing. :o :tape: But if it were a contest between the two, I'd rewatch Poseidon. :)
Remember that movie "Earthquake"? That was even worse than TI.

My mom loves Towering Inferno for some reason.

I saw the new Poseidon, but nearly fell asleep in the process.

Can't wait for X-Men.

Is that the one where they're all in the ship and the water breaks in and they're all frantically climbing the Xmas tree to escape ?

Gave me nightmares as a kid.

Wow... the movie was kinda good and exciting... except for one thing...

(prepares for massive rush of bad reps and comments)

... how come the gay character (Richard Dreyfuss, I think) SURVIVED in the end when in the beginning of the film, he wanted to commit suicide by jumping into the sea? Even funnier, during the lift scene, if he really wants to die, why don't he just RELEASE his hands and fall to his death (with the waiter)? Or maybe, wait in the ballroom until the glass broke and fills the room with water?

^^ maybe u should add spoilers to ur message. :o

i thought the new poseidon was v action packed. but there's practically zero story development.
however, the action scenes are good and the effects are pretty neat.
(maybe it's because i caught it in an imax theatre. )

Everybody go see Stick It! I really liked this movie...it's not exactly "deep" but it's funny, has a good storyline, and somewhat of a message to share. WELL worth paying for....go see it! :p

Poseidon is based on "The Poseidon Adventure" which was released way before Titanic (I believe 1998), so decades earlier.

Whether or not the original was based on the Titanic disaster ... maybe? who knows? The storyline is rather different though, the real only similarity is that they take place in the ocean and the ship is sinking. There is no love story, and the boat starts sinking pretty much at the very beginning of the original film.

On the other hand, the original "Poseidon Adventure" was released about 15 years after "A Night to Remember", which itself is not the first movie on the Titanic.

 fair enough then

I did say though that it may have been based on the event, I havent seen "A Night to Remember" so I don't know whether it was a historical film or a romance like the 1998 "Titanic." The Poseidon Adventure is nothing like the Titanic film in the sense of the romance or anything to do with the story that doesnt involve the ship sinking, thats all I meant ;)

It is basically for those who haven't seen or heard, the ship gets flipped over by a rogue wave (kinda like a tsunami but out in the middle of the ocean), and the only way to get out is to go to the bottom of the ship (now at the top) and gradually the water is catching up with them and they have to try and get to the top before the ship sinks. (Only a small group of passengers decide to try and do it, many stay in the ballroom and well ... they die :) )
